It is worth mentioning that Cukrówka is a place where reality mixes with fantasy. The boundary between them seems to be blurred. The narrator tries to figure out what happened in this city during three decades. In Słowik’s novel the world is multidimensional. Zimowla is also an interesting story about the fall of communism and the birth of capitalism viewed through the prism of everyday life. Słowik’s novel abounds in stories full of miracles, which corresponds to the human need for existence of supernatural phenomena.","PeriodicalId":112997,"journal":{"name":"Papers in Literature","volume":"139 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-07-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127750689","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Celem rozprawy jest właśnie – jak określa we wstępie sama Autorka – „próba przyjrzenia się wybranym utworom z tej części dorobku Księcia Biskupa2, która pozostaje niemal całkowicie poza uwagą badaczy i nie doczekała się jeszcze samodzielnych, całościowych opracowań” (s. 8). Badaczka zajmuje się więc zachowanymi do dziś kazaniami, artykułami pisanymi do „Monitora” i Uwagami wydanymi dopiero po śmierci autora. Leszczyńska-Skowron stara się odnaleźć we wskazanych tekstach najistotniejsze i najczęściej poruszane przez Ignacego Krasickiego tematy oraz techniki wywierania wpływu na odbiorcę będące sposobem budowania relacji nadawczo-odbiorczych w ramach stosowanej przez niego perswazyjności służącej do opisu wizji świata i przekonywania czytelników. Ze względu na różnorodność genologiczną literatury podmiotu Autorka książki dzieli monografię na trzy części i w ten sposób stara się uporządkować niejednorodny tematycznie i stylistycznie materiał badawczy. Znajduje to także formalne odzwierciedlenie w kompozycji dzieła: część I stanowią zachowane kazania (homilie i kazania okolicznościowe – por. bibliografia podmiotowa – s. 433–434), część II – wybrane roczniki i numery „Monitora” (roczniki: 1765,","PeriodicalId":112997,"journal":{"name":"Papers in Literature","volume":"303 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-07-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122114385","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Mazurkiewicz","doi":"10.31648/pl.7855","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.31648/pl.7855","url":null,"abstract":"The article analyses how Stanisław Lem’s writing is used in the doodle meant to honour the 60th anniversary of the publication of The Astronauts by this author (1951–2011). Nevertheless, it is the heroes of The Cyberiad that are employed in the game. The grotesque character of these stories corresponds to the aesthetics of the game, viewed not only in terms of a literary adaptation, but also as an illustration of the manner in which digital culture reaches for literary works. What can be seen is the lack of linguistic invention typical of Lem’s stories: it is impossible to translate the writer’s neologisms into a picture. This is the cultural price for converting literature into the language of images. The currently prevailing digital and audiovisual cultural paradigm undoubtedly affects the ways of reading texts which function within it. Yet at the same time, paradoxically, the traditional form of literature is still observable and thus new possibilities for its interpretation emerge. The pragmatic context signalled here is, however, only sketched on the margin of considerations about the somatic relations between the doodle and Lem’s stories, to which the authors of the game refer.","PeriodicalId":112997,"journal":{"name":"Papers in Literature","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-07-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116171244","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This essay adopts a different perspective and focuses on the impact of the novel’s symbolism on the shifts in its overall message. The analysis leads to uncovering certain oppositions, apparent dichotomies and paradoxes incorporated in the novel’s recurring images and motifs, with particular emphasis on the motif of dream vision. McCarthy’s ascetic style is also considered in terms of its iconicity and functionality. In other words, this essay argues that the symbolically charged elements of The Road, due to their persistence in the text characterised by minimalism, form an intricate pattern which holds the novel’s allegorical message. The point advocated is that McCarthy’s literary symbolism leaves room for redemption in the world presented and signals the possibility of rebirth. It thus has the potential to gradually undermine and eventually subvert the initial perception of the novel as entirely pessimistic. All things considered, The Road is presented as a step forward in the evolution of post-apocalyptic fiction.","PeriodicalId":112997,"journal":{"name":"Papers in Literature","volume":"35 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-07-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129712989","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The main goal of the article is to discuss the intertextuality of this tale which evokes many contexts, ranging from mythology, through medieval and baroque poetry, to contemporary science fiction artworks. The Mask recognizes a large variety of problems, such as the definition of humanity, human gender and sexuality, as well as crucial emotions like love and the will to survive. Due to its catalogue of subjects, this short story can be interpreted on various levels and from the perspective of various methodological strategies. The texts of culture mentioned in the essay include: Jacek Dukaj’s Gothic, Ernst Theodor Amadeus Hoffmann’s The Sandman, Hans Rudolf Giger’s artworks, and Bjork’s music video All Is Full of Love.
