{"title":"The Use of Talking Cards to Promote Students’ Motivation in Speaking Skill Performance","authors":"Munjiana Munjiana","doi":"10.36982/jge.v7i1.519","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.36982/jge.v7i1.519","url":null,"abstract":"AbstractDue to low motivation of Management students in sharing their ideas orally, a study on using a talking card to promote students’ motivation in speaking skill performance was conducted. A classroom observation method was used in this study. The sample was 40 students of Management Students in the sixth Semester of STIE MuliaDarmaPratama Palembang. The data were obtained by means of observation and questionnaire. Based on the result of the data analysis, it found out that there was a significant difference of students’ willingness in speaking up their opinion after implementing the talking cards. It was also found out that the samples had positive attitude toward the use of talking cards. Most of them were glad to have the cards during the lesson. The students became more enthusiastic as they competed each other to spend the cards soon. They also, subconsciously, developed their 4Cs (Critical thinking and Problem solving, Communication, Collaboration, Creativity and Innovation) as they should find any strategy in order to produce words to argue for their friend’s opinion or simply just to give comment to their friend’s story. Finally, the writer recommends the use of this card in order to promote students’ motivation in speaking as well as develop their 4Cs.Keywords : speaking skill performance, students’ motivation, talking cards AbstrakKarena motivasi rendah siswa Manajemen dalam berbagi ide mereka secara lisan, sebuah penelitian tentang penggunaan talking cards untuk mempromosikan motivasi siswa dalam keterampilan berbicara dilakukan. Metode observasi kelas digunakan dalam penelitian ini. Sampel penelitian adalah 40 mahasiswa Manajemen Mahasiswa semester enam STIE Mulia Darma Pratama Palembang. Data diperoleh dengan cara observasi dan kuesioner. Berdasarkan hasil analisis data, ditemukan bahwa ada perbedaan yang signifikan dari kemauan siswa dalam mengungkapkan pendapat mereka setelah menerapkan kartu berbicara. Itu juga menemukan bahwa sampel memiliki sikap positif terhadap penggunaan talking cards. Sebagian besar dari mereka senang memiliki kartu selama pelajaran. Para siswa menjadi lebih antusias karena mereka saling berkompetisi untuk segera menghabiskan kartu. Mereka juga, tanpa sadar, mengembangkan 4C mereka (Pemikiran Kritis dan Pemecahan masalah, Komunikasi, Kolaborasi, Kreativitas, dan Inovasi) karena mereka harus menemukan strategi apa pun untuk menghasilkan kata-kata untuk memperdebatkan pendapat teman mereka atau hanya sekadar memberi komentar pada kisah teman mereka . {"title":"The Effectiveness of Tourism Videos to Improve The Tenth Grade Students’ Speaking Achievement in SMKN 6 Palembang","authors":"Bella Syebania, Jaya Nur Iman","doi":"10.36982/jge.v7i1.518","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.36982/jge.v7i1.518","url":null,"abstract":"AbstractThis research was aimed to find out whether there was significant improvement on speaking achievement of the tenth grade students of SMKN 6 Palembang after being taught by using the Tourism Videos and to find out whether there was significant mean difference on speaking achievement between the students who were taught by using Tourism Videos and those who were not. This research applied experimental research design. The sample of this research were 31 students of SMKN 6 Palembang and divided into experimental and control groups. The results of this study were calculated by using SPSS. The research finding showed that the mean score of pretest of experimental group was 56,84 improved to 80,32. And the mean difference of posttest between experimental and control group was 2.129 and the mean difference of speaking improvement between the pretest and posttest within the experimental group was 23,484. The research findings revealed that the teaching of speaking improved the students’ speaking achievement due to having received the treatment using Tourism Videos. Hence, that there was significant improvement on speaking achievement in the experimental group and there was significant mean difference between the students who were taught by using Tourism Videos and those who were not.Keywords : Improving speaking skill, speaking skill, tourism video AbstrakPenelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui apakah ada peningkatan yang signifikan terhadap prestasi berbicara siswa kelas X SMKN 6 Palembang setelah diajar dengan menggunakan Video Pariwisata dan untuk mengetahui apakah ada perbedaan rata-rata yang signifikan pada prestasi berbicara antara siswa yang diajarkan dengan menggunakan Video Pariwisata dan mereka yang tidak. Penelitian ini menggunakan desain penelitian eksperimental. Sampel penelitian ini adalah 31 siswa SMKN 6 Palembang dan dibagi menjadi kelompok eksperimen dan kontrol. Hasil penelitian ini dihitung dengan menggunakan SPSS. Temuan penelitian menunjukkan bahwa skor rata-rata pretest dari kelompok eksperimen adalah 56,84 meningkat menjadi 80,32. Dan perbedaan rata-rata posttest antara eksperimental dan kelompok kontrol adalah 2,129 dan perbedaan rata-rata peningkatan berbicara antara pretest dan posttest dalam kelompok eksperimen adalah 23.484. Temuan penelitian mengungkapkan bahwa pengajaran berbicara meningkatkan prestasi berbicara siswa karena telah menerima perlakuan menggunakan Video Pariwisata. {"title":"Developing Students’ Writing and Digital Literacy using Weblog at Tridinanti University of Palembang","authors":"H. Thus, this research was aimed at investigating the development of students’ writing and digital literacy through weblog. The sample of the study was 20 students of the fourth semester English study program of Tridinanti University Palembang. The researchers used purposive sampling as the way of choosing the sample because the sample is taught by the researchers in writing class. The researchers applied quasi-experimental design in term of pretest-posttest non equivalent group design. Moreover, there are three types of data collection used by the researchers; they are test, questionnaire and observation. After the study, it was found out that the results of posttest between experiment and control group show significant difference with t value of posttest was 11.739, sig 0.000 while t value of gain score was 7.671, sig 0.000. Accordingly, all aspects of writing both posttest and gain score show significant differences. Furthermore, it was also found that the developments of digital literacy components from the highest to the lowest are as follows: 1) information sources (36%), 2) digital competencies (23%), 3) attitude and perspective (24%), and 4) basic ICT skill (17%). The results indicate that the concept of digital library in this study encouraged students’ knowledge about information sources. The highest progress made by the students from the observation results was in students’ basic ICT skill then followed by digital competencies because the number of the students who were in excellent category was almost or closely above 50% for these two components. Meanwhile, though attitude and perspective and information sources also increased still they were not as high as other two components as there was only small number of the students who were in excellent category. The results reveal that weblog is effective to develop students’ writing and digital literacy. In addition, students showed positive views because using blog was very interesting and it provided more cooperation between lecturer and students.Keywords : weblog; ICT; writing literacy; digital literacy.AbstrakSaat ini, kita hidup di dunia digital yang dinamis di mana dosen dan masiswa ditantang dengan perkembangan teknologi yang terus berubah. Pair or group work is one of the main ways to increase cooperation. Many games can be played in pairs or in small groups, thereby providing an opportunity to develop their interpersonal skills such as the skill of disagreeing politely or the skill of asking for help. In the classroom learners will definitely participate in the activities. Therefore, in groups or in pairs, they are more willing to ask questions, communicate and discuss topics with their partners and think creatively about how to use foreign language to achieve their goals. The competition in the games gives students a natural opportunity to work together and communicate with each other a lot.Games improve learners’ language acquisition.Thanks to the motivation and interaction created by games, students can acquire knowledge faster and more effectively than by other means. Games can stimulate and encourage students to participate in the activity since they naturally want to win. Apart from having fun, students are learning. They acquire a new language. Students begin to realize that they have to use the language if they want others to understand what they are saying.Furthermore,games can lower anxiety. In the easy, relaxed atmosphere which is created by using games, students remember things faster and better.The meaning of the language students listen to, read, speak and write in will be more vividly experienced in a game and, therefore, they will better remember the language they learn.Games increase learners’ achievement.Games can involve all the basic language skills, i.e., listening, speaking, reading, and writing, and a number of skills are often involved in the same game.Games can motivate learners, promote learners’ interaction, and improve learners’ acquisition. This study was conducted by using a quasi-experimental design with pretest and posttest. The population of this study consisted of 259 tenth grade students of SMA Muhammadiyah 1 Palembang in Academic Year of 2016/2017. There were 40 students taken as sample. Each group consisted of 20 students as experimental group and 20 students from class as control group. The sample of this study was taken by using purposive sampling method.  In this study, the researcher used pretest-posttest non-equivalent group design. The instrument used in collecting the data was oral test in the form of presentation. The test was administrated twice as the pretest and posttest for both experimental and control group. The results of the test were analyzed by using IBM SPSS (Statistical Package for the Social Science) Statistics 21. The result showed that “there was means significant difference from students posttest score in experimental and control group, it was found the p-ouput (Sig.2-tailed) was lower than 0.05 level and t-obtained (9.823) is higher than t-table (2.024). So, the Ho (the null hypothesis) was rejected and Ha (the alternative hypothesis) was accepted. It means that there was significant difference on students’ reading comprehension achievement taught using Theme-Based Teaching than students who were taught by using teacher’s strategy. The method of this research was quasi experimental design. There were 20 students taken as the sample for both experimental and control group, respectively. The speaking test, in pretest and posttest, was used to collect the data. The data of speaking test was then analyzed by using SPSS program. The research findings revealed that holistically there a significant improvement on the students’ speaking achievement who were taught by using TSTS Method. Analytically, there a significant improvement on the students’ speaking aspects achievement who were taught by using TSTS Method where the highest score of speaking aspects in the experimental group were in fluency (0.85)  and pronunciation (0.75). The population of this study consisted of 154 ninth grade students of SMP PGRI1 Palembang in Academic Year of 2016/2017. There were 34 students taken as sample. Each group consisted of 17 students as experimental group and 17 students from class as control group. The sample of this study was taken by using purposive sampling method. In this study, the researcher used pretest-posttest non-equivalent group design. The instrument used in collecting the data was oral test in the form of presentation. The test was administrated twice as the pretest and posttest for both experimental and control group. The results of the test were analyzed by using IBM SPSS (Statistical Package for the Social Science) Statistics 21.
