To apply statistical methods the population size of breakdown data has to be sufficiently large. Though studies have been conducted on breakdown field strength of polymers at room temperature, yielding a large number of data, such studies at high temperatures are relatively few due to practical limitations. The dependencies of head-flow rate characteristic on the potential difference applied to the electrodes, interelectrode gap distance, channel width in the interelectrode gap, the distance between collectors, and conductivity of working liquid are presented. It is found that the width of channel in the interelectrode gap (/spl delta/) and the gap between collectors (s) affect significantly the EHD pump characteristics. Above a certain voltage of the point electrode, the surface of the liquid deforms and convection appears in the form of large cells (rose-window instability). The typical width of the cells is much larger than the depth of the liquid layer. This justifies the analysis of the instability focusing in the behaviour of perturbations of small wave number (large wavelength). We write the linear equations for the instability of the liquid surface and solve it analytically, neglecting the liquid motion. In order to investigate the intrinsic electrical breakdown phenomena, the applied electric field was increased 3MV/cm in 150ms, and kept constant until breakdown, or 300ms at the longest. Space charge profiles were measured at 1ms intervals. A significant positive charge propagation into the sample was observed only immediately before the breakdown at 90/spl deg/C. The field distribution - and therefore the space charge distribution over the insulation thickness determine the behavior and the life expectancy of the cable, since a very high space charge level is obviously undesirable. This article presents the build-up of space charge, as measured by the thermal step method (TSM) in flat samples of polyethylene, under various levels of temperature. The absorption current flowing after application of a voltage step and the decaying surface potential after DC poling, which are indirect manifestations of space charge accumulation, have also been recorded. A blend of LDPE with a conjugated polymer might modify the trapping ability. Using PVM (parallel virtual machine) programming procedure for UNIX operating system, hydrophobicity of polymer surface was evaluated from their surface images of water droplets on the sample surface. The hydrophobic surface images under the spraying of distilled water were taken by CCD camcorder. The video image was divided into each image frame and PVM program analyzed each image data, simultaneously. Image indexes such as size and shape factor, fc, of droplets can be evaluated from each hydrophobic image frame. Then, the distribution of the size and fc were evaluated. These tests were conducted using a conventional partial discharge detector (PDD), turbine generator analyzer (TGA) and partial discharge analyzer (PDA). Off-line PD measurements were performed on using the PDD. PD magnitude of the No. 1 and 2 stator windings was about 8,200 pC and 2,400 pC at the normal line-to-ground voltage, respectively. Two stator windings have been equipped with two 80 pF epoxy-mica couplers (one per stator winding). The PD pulses from sensors were measured with the TGA and PDA instruments at 3.81 kV, 4.76 kV and 6.6 kV. The PDD, TGA and PDA showed that off-line PD magnitude, the maximum PD magnitude (Qm) and normalized quantity number (NQN) increased with increase of ac voltage. The PDD, TGA and PDA test results showed that internal and slot discharges were detected in voids of the groundwall insulation and at the surface of stator winding. The results of the PDD, TGA and PDA measurements can be directly correlated with the pattern, the magnitude and the number of PD.","PeriodicalId":112180,"journal":{"name":"2001 Annual Report Conference on Electrical Insulation and Dielectric Phenomena (Cat. Resistance to corona-induced degradation of NCI housing materials is an important factor that impacts NCI long-term reliability, and is the focal point of this paper. Two sources of corona. have been investigated: corona from a metal electrode, and corona from water droplets. Field inspections were performed on 230 and 500 kV insulators to demonstrate the existence of corona even under relatively clean and dry conditions. Three commonly used NCI housing materials, namely high temperature vulcanized (HTV) silicone rubber, ethylene propylene diene monomer (EPDM) and a blend of EPDM and silicone polymer have been evaluated. Data gathered from electrical and physicochemical analyses show that corona induced degradation is dominantly due to a combination of electro-chemical reactions rather than thermal effects.","PeriodicalId":112180,"journal":{"name":"2001 Annual Report Conference on Electrical Insulation and Dielectric Phenomena (Cat.
