Therefore, it is important to understand the PD behaviors in the ageing process. In this paper, partial discharges of low-density polyethylene (LDPE) specimens with needle-plane electrode system were investigated. One specimen had a small air gap between the needle electrode and LDPE, and the other had no air gap between them. The change in PD /spl phi/-q-n pattern with ageing time was quite different between LDPE specimens with and without a small air gap. These results were also compared with the result for LDPE specimens with a small void. Based on the above experimental results, the mechanisms of PD degradation and the applications to insulation diagnosis were discussed.","PeriodicalId":112180,"journal":{"name":"2001 Annual Report Conference on Electrical Insulation and Dielectric Phenomena (Cat. In addition, the incorporation of these fillers into a rubber formulation lowers the cost of these compositions making it an attractive choice for manufacturers of outdoor insulation. Although various laboratory tests have shown that fillers are beneficial in preventing tracking or erosion, studies have not demonstrated which of the two materials perform better in actual field applications. Furthermore, some recent studies have shown that the presence of ATH is really not required to enhance the resistance to tracking and erosion. The aim of the present study is to compare the performance of filled and unfilled silicone rubber using the inclined plane tracking and erosion test. Material samples, prepared with either silica or alumina trihydrate are tested while a data acquisition system monitors the voltage and leakage current. The loss of material due to erosion is determined and correlated with the energy of dry-band arcing discharges.","PeriodicalId":112180,"journal":{"name":"2001 Annual Report Conference on Electrical Insulation and Dielectric Phenomena (Cat. The electrode system consists of a corona wire electrode in gas-phase and an inclined plate electrode in a gas-liquid interface. An operation of the DC corona discharge electrohydrodynamically induces gas-liquid two-phase stratified flow, and pumps the liquid out of its tank along the plate electrode surface against the gravitational force. An analysis of the internal liquid flow in the tank is carried out by an image processing technique from the visualized liquid flow patterns. The velocity distribution of the liquid flow inside the tank and along the gas-liquid interface is quantitatively shown.","PeriodicalId":112180,"journal":{"name":"2001 Annual Report Conference on Electrical Insulation and Dielectric Phenomena (Cat. The mathematical equations modeling the system have been based on this tubular aspect. To verify the validity of this form, we measured the current during the evolution of the discharge in two experimental models. From the graphical analysis of the measured current I(t), we deduced that the discharge doesn't evolve in a tubular form but takes the aspect of a foot that lies down. Then the theoretical dynamic features calculated using the tubular dynamic aspect is only the sum of static independent points distinctly different from the experimental characteristic.","PeriodicalId":112180,"journal":{"name":"2001 Annual Report Conference on Electrical Insulation and Dielectric Phenomena (Cat. Here, the three complementing methods in use in Switzerland are discussed: Off-line partial discharge diagnosis (PD), frequency response analysis (FRA) and polarisation/depolarisation current measurements (PDC). For PD and for FRA noteworthy experience exists already. However, the PDC method became only recently available as an user-friendly method; its aptitude is described in detail and it is shown how to obtain information on the integral condition of the oil-cellulose insulation system from PDC measurements.","PeriodicalId":112180,"journal":{"name":"2001 Annual Report Conference on Electrical Insulation and Dielectric Phenomena (Cat. Such materials are currently being developed for power-ground decoupling in electronic circuits operating at microwave frequencies. In order to extend the measurements to the microwave range, we developed an appropriate expression for the input admittance of a thin film capacitance terminating a coaxial line. The theoretical model treats the capacitance as a distributed network and correlates the network scattering parameter with complex permittivity of the specimen. The method eliminates the systematic uncertainties of the lumped element approximations and is suitable for high frequency characterization of low impedance substrates with high value of the dielectric constant. The complex permittivity was measured at frequencies of 100 Hz to 10 GHz for films 100 /spl mu/m thick, having the dielectric constant of 4 to 40, and was fitted to a dielectric model expressed as a combination of Havriliak-Negami functions. An intrinsic high frequency relaxation process has been identified. It was found that the position of the loss peak depends on the relaxation of polymer matrix, while its magnitude is amplified by the permittivity of the ferroelectric component.","PeriodicalId":112180,"journal":{"name":"2001 Annual Report Conference on Electrical Insulation and Dielectric Phenomena (Cat. In the case of China, more than 90% of the 800000 composite insulators are operating in heavy or medium pollution environments. As the exposure time in the field is prolonged, the change of hydrophobicity and the build-up of pollution layer directly affect pollution performance of the composite insulator. The paper is based on part of the work of a system investigation aiming at inspection and evaluation on pollution performance and aging of the composite insulator in service. More than 40 composite insulators, all made of HTV silicone rubber, were removed from 110 kV-220 kV HV lines. The service time changes from 1 year to 10 years. Hydrophobicity status and pollution status of these insulators are reviewed in the paper. Data from the field provide important references for the research on aging and pollution property and for the build-up of relevant test methods.","PeriodicalId":112180,"journal":{"name":"2001 Annual Report Conference on Electrical Insulation and Dielectric Phenomena (Cat. The plates were charged using corona discharge. The charge distribution on the surface was acquired using a scanning system and then a grounded electrode was moved to the charged surface until a discharge occurred and the new charge distribution was measured. Furthermore, the discharge current pulse was measured. With the acquired charge distribution values, the transported charge and the area of the discharged surface were determined. The transported charge was also determined using the measured current pulse. Additionally, theoretical work was performed to develop a model that allows the calculation of the dissipated power and energy during the discharge.","PeriodicalId":112180,"journal":{"name":"2001 Annual Report Conference on Electrical Insulation and Dielectric Phenomena (Cat.
