A theoretical comparison of transmit diversity and beamforming techniques in the presence of fading correlation at an antenna array and handoff is presented. The objective is to investigate transmit power of both system and investigate the effect of array perturbations that exist in practical applications of antenna arrays. The perturbations are modeled as additive random errors, following complex Gaussian multivariate distribution, to the antenna array steering vectors. Using the outage probability of the instantaneous channel capacity and transmitter power as performance measures, we conclude that by overlooking array perturbations the performance evaluation tends to underestimate and overestimate, respectively, the transmit diversity and beamforming systems in practical application environments.","PeriodicalId":110448,"journal":{"name":"2009 IEEE 20th International Symposium on Personal, Indoor and Mobile Radio Communications","volume":"16 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116952833","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The variety of services will range from HDTV via gaming to emergency services in the telemedicine area. In this paper, we introduce a technology-independent protocol layer called Inter-MAC which provides a common infrastructure to all home networking devices. The Inter-MAC can establish a connection via different transmission technologies while ensuring appropriate QoS. Key to this is the capability to correctly interpret technology-dependent PHY and MAC parameters for determining QoS when selecting initial and alternative paths, as well as the feature of admission control. Our simulations indicate clearly that the Inter-MAC approach can cope with varying loads, for instance, the time the jitter needed to stabilize was as short as 4 s. The reduced QoS was not noticeable by the user since the jitter introduced by handling additional HDTV flows was less than 0.2 ms for the existing and less than 0.7 ms for the new flow.","PeriodicalId":110448,"journal":{"name":"2009 IEEE 20th International Symposium on Personal, Indoor and Mobile Radio Communications","volume":"196 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121137816","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Several standards support these techniques such as the wireless metropolitan area network IEEE 802.16 (WiMAX) and IMT-Advanced candidates. In applying smart antenna beamforming and Space Division Multiple Access (SDMA) techniques, adaptive antennas are able to increase cell capacity by reducing inter-cell interference and by allowing concurrent transmissions. As a downside, an SDMA enabled cell generates less predictable interference than a conventional cell, because a changing number of mobile stations (MS) are sending uplink data in parallel and downlink streams with changing direction are transmitted by the base station (BS). Thereby the SINR estimation becomes less precise and the link adaptation sub optimal. This work investigates the potential of coordination across BSs on MAC layer for further mitigation of inter-cell interference and increasing precision of SINR estimations in an SDMA enhanced system. The developed concepts are evaluated in a cellular deployment by means of system-level simulations for up-and downlink. The performance of a coordinated system is compared with a non-coordinated reference case.","PeriodicalId":110448,"journal":{"name":"2009 IEEE 20th International Symposium on Personal, Indoor and Mobile Radio Communications","volume":"67 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124939446","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Well adapted to the wireless environment, MaxSNR opportunistically considers the channel state and fights the multipath fading negative effects. Taking advantage of multiuser diversity, MaxSNR scheduling is well-known for maximizing the global cell throughput. However, throughput maximization is made at the expense of fairness. Indeed, severe fairness deficiencies appear especially when mobiles experience unequal path loss due to unequal position. In this paper, we propose to solve this fairness issue with a modified MaxSNR scheme that introduces distance compensation factors while keeping the original MaxSNR system throughput maximization properties. Simulation results show that this well-balanced resource allocation outperforms other existing scheduling schemes and jointly provides both high system throughput and high fairness.","PeriodicalId":110448,"journal":{"name":"2009 IEEE 20th International Symposium on Personal, Indoor and Mobile Radio Communications","volume":"32 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125014795","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The entries of this stochastic matrix are adaptively computed by applying the first order Markov model with MPEG-4 zerotree sequences. Because of channel disturbances, we obtain the mismatched STPM at the ML-Viterbi receiver and then employ it for newly computed branch metrics at the MAP source-controlled channel decoder. For analysis, we also evaluate the residual redundancies for both the “Lena” and the “Barbara” images. The system performance is summarized in term of both PSNR (dB) and WER for three types of slow flat Rician fading channels. For Maximum Likelihood (ML) decoding at the destination, directly estimating the product of source-relay (S-R) channel and relay-destination (R-D) channel either is difficult, or causes drastic receiver degradation. The TPE scheme employs two pilot space-time codes to jointly estimate the channels. One pilot code is used to experience the source-relay-destination (S-R-D) channels, and another one is assigned for the R-D channel. To reduce computation complexity, Two-Step TPE and LSE-TPE estimators are proposed as the suboptimal TPE estimators. Optimal power allocation between two pilots is also derived. Simulation shows that the TPE scheme is better than the product based estimation schemes.","PeriodicalId":110448,"journal":{"name":"2009 IEEE 20th International Symposium on Personal, Indoor and Mobile Radio Communications","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125909119","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Nowadays, most access mechanisms proposed for WSN are costly and difficult to build an entire network. However, the research of ERCS is significant since it is the one based on the widely used IEEE 802.11b which is already a mature technology in wireless communications. Thus ERCS can facilitate implementations in the practical applications, which is a brand new resolution for WSN. The strategies of ERCS mainly include explicit reservation and coordinated sleeping. First, the Explicit Reservation executed by the sink node can guarantee the fast and reliable accessing of the reserved sensor nodes. Second, through Coordinated Sleeping, sensor nodes which do not occupy the wireless channel or do not have data to send can go to the sleeping mode to save energy after the coordination with the sink node. In the end, based on the analysis of the novel Markov chain model and OPNET simulations with various network scales under large open NLOS condition, it is substantiated that the ERCS can obtain favorable performances in terms of low energy consumption, good scalability and high throughput.","PeriodicalId":110448,"journal":{"name":"2009 IEEE 20th International Symposium on Personal, Indoor and Mobile Radio Communications","volume":"148 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123435348","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Link Adaptation techniques have been proposed to improve the degraded network performance by adjusting the design parameters, e.g. the modulation and coding schemes, in order to adopt the dynamically changing channel conditions. Furthermore, due to the advancement of the IEEE 802.11n standard, the network goodput can be enhanced with the exploitation of its frame aggregation schemes. However, none of the existing link adaption algorithm is designed to consider the feasible aggregated frame length that should be adapted according to the changing environments. In this paper, A frame-aggregated link adaptation (FALA) algorithm is proposed to dynamically adjust system parameters in order to improve the network goodput under varying channel conditions. For the purpose of maximizing the network goodput, both the optimal frame payload size and the modulation and coding schemes are jointly acquired according to the signal-to-noise ratio under specific channel condition. Numerical results illustrate that the proposed FALA protocol can effectively increase the goodput performance comparing with other existing link adaptation schemes, especially under dynamically changing environments.","PeriodicalId":110448,"journal":{"name":"2009 IEEE 20th International Symposium on Personal, Indoor and Mobile Radio Communications","volume":"47 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123565546","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Based on the fact that battery capacity is still limited, energy saving is an important issue in wireless communication. Many methods have been proposed to save energy in wireless communication, such as power-aware routing and sleep mode. However, another important approach, transmission power adaptation, is not yet well discussed. In this paper, we propose a mechanism that selects the appropriate transmission power level to transmit packets instead of using a fixed default power level for all packets, which is common in IEEE 802.11. Lower transmission power levels may result in more retransmissions, but still consumes less energy. In total, energy can be saved and interference can be reduced by selecting a good transmission power level. We propose a two phase power saving mechanism and implemented it in a real test-bed. To evaluate the performance of our mechanism, we used an indoor environment to carry out measurements. The measurement results indicate that a significant amount of energy can be saved for the transmitter in most scenarios compared to using a fixed transmission power level for all packets.","PeriodicalId":110448,"journal":{"name":"2009 IEEE 20th International Symposium on Personal, Indoor and Mobile Radio Communications","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126751824","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
