Iterative waterfilling is used in the power allocation process and shown to result in an optimal power allocation solution for multiple-relay networks. Iterative waterfilling is then developed with a power reallocation process to achieve more efficient spectrum utilization. Furthermore, joint subcarrier and power allocation algorithms are proposed with and without consideration for multiuser fairness. Simulation results show that iterative waterfilling can significantly improve the system capacity. The proposed joint allocation algorithm achieves gains of up to 21% in system capacity compared to iterative waterfilling. The joint allocation algorithm with fairness is shown to degrade system capacity, however fairness is important in a multiuser network.","PeriodicalId":110448,"journal":{"name":"2009 IEEE 20th International Symposium on Personal, Indoor and Mobile Radio Communications","volume":"23 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-09-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125602090","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Its main technical objective is to achieve a reduction of the overall energy consumption of mobile broadband networks by 50%. In contrast to previous efforts, EARTH regards both network aspects and individual radio components from a holistic point of view. Considering that the signal strength strongly decreases with the distance to the base station, small cells are more energy efficient than large cells. EARTH will develop corresponding deployment strategies as well as management algorithms and protocols on the network level. On the component level, the project focuses on base station optimizations as power amplifiers consume the most energy in the system. A power efficient transceiver will be developed that adapts to changing traffic load for an energy efficient operation in mobile radio systems. With these results EARTH will reduce energy costs and carbon dioxide emissions and will thus enable a sustainable increase of mobile data rates.","PeriodicalId":110448,"journal":{"name":"2009 IEEE 20th International Symposium on Personal, Indoor and Mobile Radio Communications","volume":"13 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-09-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115398138","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The proposed DSTBC is devised for amplify-and-forward (AF) relay networks over frequency selective fading channels. The data is transmitted from the source to the destination by a block-wise manner, resembling the block level of Alamouti scheme. A TS is padded to the tail of each information-bearing data block. The use of TS in this paper is twofold. First, it plays as a cyclic extension, thereby allowing us to construct a low-complexity receiver in the frequency domain. Second, it can be used for channel estimation. In contrast to zero padding technique, the introduction of TS makes it difficult to decouple the detection of data blocks. To recover the orthogonality of the equivalent space-time channel, we carefully treat the interference induced by the training sequences. As the second contribution, a least square (LS) channel estimation approach is also proposed for the proposed DSTBC. The optimal training sequences are designed to minimize the effect of additive noise. Bit-error-rate (BER) performance comparison is carried out by computer simulation.","PeriodicalId":110448,"journal":{"name":"2009 IEEE 20th International Symposium on Personal, Indoor and Mobile Radio Communications","volume":"31 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-09-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131882411","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Mathematical expressions for received signal and the interference in the modified transmission scheme are derived. It is shown that the modified transmission approach reduces multi-user interference which eventually translates into a better bit error rate (BER) performance than simple TR multiuser scheme. Channel impulse responses (CIR) of a typical indoor channel are measured. In a multi-user scenario, both TR and the modified TR schemes are studied using the measured CIRs. We propose a realistic Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO) physical layer which combines a determinist propagation model and a fine-grained model of wireless transmission errors. The determinist propagation model takes into account all the environmental characteristics (geometric and electric) and provides all the information of the multi-path channel (received power, complex impulse response). The wireless transmission errors model is based on a BER computation. The BER is calculated according to 802.11n standard to evaluate MIMO wireless links and, then, is compared to both SISO configuration and an existing wireless errors model using empirical propagation models. In the case of a SISO configuration, the BER is computed according to 802.11a standard. The simulation results show clearly a significant difference in term of QoS for the video transmission using realistic and empirical physical layer. In addition, the MIMO system, compared to a SISO one, improves the quality of links in the network and, thus, provides a better QoS for video transmission over Ad Hoc networks.","PeriodicalId":110448,"journal":{"name":"2009 IEEE 20th International Symposium on Personal, Indoor and Mobile Radio Communications","volume":"95 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-09-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114740133","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In our proposed cooperative scheme, we adopt multi-cell block diagonalization (BD) algorithm to perform joint procession across the evolved coordinated eNodeBs to mitigate the inter-cell interference (ICI) so as to enhance the whole system performance. Proportional fair (PF) scheduling algorithm is also applied to guarantee the fairness between the users. Furthermore, different numbers of antennas employed at the eNodeB are considered and their affects on our proposed cooperative scheme are analyzed as well. Of course, a system simulation platform is established for the downlink LTE-Advanced system to evaluate the performance of this scheme from the system level perspective. Ultimately, from the simulation results, we can draw that the coordinated multi-cell MU-MIMO scheme we proposed is an effective approach to improve the spectral efficiency prominently and much more spectral efficient comparing to conventional non-cooperative MIMO scheme for the downlink LTE-Advanced system.","PeriodicalId":110448,"journal":{"name":"2009 IEEE 20th International Symposium on Personal, Indoor and Mobile Radio Communications","volume":"53 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115315801","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We have proposed an IQ imbalance estimation scheme in the presence of DC offset and frequency offset, which uses preamble signals in the time domain. In this scheme, the DC offset is eliminated by a differential filter. However, the accuracy of IQ imbalance estimation is deteriorated when the frequency offset is small. To overcome this problem, a new IQ imbalance estimation scheme in the frequency domain has been proposed in this paper. The IQ imbalance is estimated with pilot subcarriers. Numerical results obtained through computer simulation show that estimation accuracy and bit error rate (BER) performance can be improved even if the frequency offset is small.","PeriodicalId":110448,"journal":{"name":"2009 IEEE 20th International Symposium on Personal, Indoor and Mobile Radio Communications","volume":"2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115388290","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A main contribution of this paper is to clarify the joint network-and-channel coding combined with an iterative decoding is effective in providing highly reliable wireless communications even in the case where distances from one destination node to two source nodes are not the same in the case of triangular topology network. In this case, it is subject to imbalanced signal powers at the destination node, resulting in imbalanced link quality. In this paper, we focus on an analogy between the triangular topology network and a quaternary PSK (QPSK) symbol with a rectangular shape, i.e., imbalanced the in-phase and quadrature-phase (I-Q). After demonstrating that the rectangular QPSK has a potential to detect signals with high accuracy by iterative decoding, a configuration of the cooperative relay to be proposed in this paper is revealed. Computer simulation confirms that both the rectangular QPSK and the cooperation are effective to solve the imbalanced problem.","PeriodicalId":110448,"journal":{"name":"2009 IEEE 20th International Symposium on Personal, Indoor and Mobile Radio Communications","volume":"103 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123164603","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In particular, the new developed and standardized ITU-R IMT-Advanced multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) Channel Model (IMT-Adv MCM) is detailed. The IMT-Adv MCM is compared with the well-known the 3GPP/3GPP2 Spatial Channel Model (SCM), and their main similarities and differences are pointed out. The performance of MIMO systems is greatly influenced by the spatial-temporal correlation properties of the underlying MIMO channels. Here, we investigate the spatial-temporal correlation characteristics of the 3GPP/3GPP2 SCM and the IMT-Adv MCM in term of their spatial multiplexing and spatial diversity gains.
