In the study, the participants experienced an Uncooperative and a Cooperative agent. Although cooperation was unexpected, our results suggest that the participants identified the Cooperative agent as more helpful than the Uncooperative agent, and that they were inclined to reciprocate the helping actions more to the former agent than the latter one. We discuss the possibilities of further using Space Invaders as a practical scenario to study human-agent cooperation.","PeriodicalId":109801,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 8th International Conference on Human-Agent Interaction","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-11-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131216645","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

One avenue of research consists in assisting them in their control task by an assistant agent. This paper presents a feasibility study in this field, involving interactions between humans and an assistant agent. For this purpose, a game theory-based model is proposed in order to be able to model a context-sensitive system for the cooperative realization of complex tasks. In this case, the participants of the game are human operators and an assisting agent interacting within the framework of the realization of a control task. Thus, each participants can choose an action between two possible ones (to cooperate or not). Then, the proposed utility functions allow to build the context-sensitive payoff matrix at each observation cycle of the human-machine interaction. To validate our model, we have implemented a simulated control situation; it concerns the regulation of traffic through intersections; this involves two human operators and an assistant agent. Thus, the assistant agent uses the game payoff matrix for its decision-making in using Nash equilibrium. This paper describes a feasibility study, focusing on an analysis of the results obtained during the execution of the simulation. Different research perspectives arise from this study in order to improve and generalize the proposed model.","PeriodicalId":109801,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 8th International Conference on Human-Agent Interaction","volume":"20 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-11-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127073098","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These application areas require robots to be able to interact with humans in an efficient and socially acceptable manner. At the same time, like all technologies, robots may not only bring benefits, but also change how we think and behave. This calls for human-robot interaction researchers to design and develop more human-centric and trustworthy artificial intelligence and robotics, which put humans at the center and preserve human agency and autonomy, where robots adapt to the way humans communicate in the world, rather than the other way around. My research career has been devoted to the questions surrounding whether and how machines should embody human-like qualities, in order to be truly human-centric and trustworthy. In this talk I will present examples of human-robot interaction studies and technical advances in socially assistive scenarios from my research at the Uppsala Social Robotics Lab [1], investigating different levels of human-like qualities in robots, from appearance to behaviours and their synergies, in the quest for more human-centric robots.","PeriodicalId":109801,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 8th International Conference on Human-Agent Interaction","volume":"24 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-11-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130564969","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A particularly important factor in implementing an acceptable agent is to make the risk-taking tendency closer to the player. People tend to be attracted to people who has same preference and make similar behavior with themselves. Thus, it is estimated that people are also attracted to cooperative game agents who has same tendency. In this study, we implemented two agents with different risk-taking tendencies. Participants evaluated gameplay with each agent. As a result, Participants with a high-risk taking tendency perceived that agents with a high-risk taking tendency understood the rules of the game more. And vice versa. This suggests that it is possible to improve the player's game experience by making the agent's risk tendency similar to the player's one.","PeriodicalId":109801,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 8th International Conference on Human-Agent Interaction","volume":"5 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-11-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129879195","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In common dollhouse play, children move the dolls and imagine the world of the dollhouse. In this study, distance and pressure sensors were installed in the dollhouse and projection mapping was used to project interactive images in response to the measurements. The images were generated in real-time in response to doll and hand movements, which were then reflected in the dollhouse, allowing for a wider range of doll play.","PeriodicalId":109801,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 8th International Conference on Human-Agent Interaction","volume":"36 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-11-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123750077","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Our simple design leverages techniques from psychology to encourage self-reflection and promote wellness. To increase feasibility, we pay special attention to simple and robust robotic interaction, avoiding complex behaviors that may be prohibitively complex (i.e., possible in lab but not deployable) or unpredictable (e.g., generated speech saying something inappropriate). We present a novel robot behavior design to have simple self-reflection conversations with people to improve wellness, while still being feasible, deployable, and safe.","PeriodicalId":109801,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 8th International Conference on Human-Agent Interaction","volume":"68 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-11-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123102888","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The relationship between people and dogs (wherein they are regarded as family members in the home) is well-studied. Since social agents have recently become a part of family life, a new field of research has been introduced that is centered on the human--agent and dog--agent relationships. Hence, in this study, to investigate how social agents are perceived by dog owners and dogs, we employed existing communication agents such as smart speakers and conducted two experiments; the first one investigated dog owners' impression toward the agents in agent--owner interaction and the second one investigated dog's behavior in front of the agents during owner's speaking to the agents and the agents' speaking to the dogs. Furthermore, we statistically analyzed the results of thirty-three dog-owners and twenty-one dogs. The results obtained from the GODSPEED questionnaire analysis indicate that regarding aspects such as anthropomorphism, animacy, likability, and perceived intelligence, the dog-like smart speaker is significantly worse than the educational humanoid robots NAO and Pepper. Regarding aspects such as animacy, likability, and perceived intelligence, the dog-like smart speaker has a significantly lower rating than Google Home, and it has a lower rating than Pepper with respect to perceived safety. However, in the case of canine behavioral analysis, the percentage of individuals who engaged in social behaviors (such as sniffing the rear) in response to the dog-like smart speaker is found to be significantly higher than that for the other agents. Hence, although this study is an exploratory experiment in terms of subject limitations and determination of behavioral indicators, it is the first step towards bridging the gap between owners' and dogs' perceptions of an agent's sociality while employing the same physical agents.","PeriodicalId":109801,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 8th International Conference on Human-Agent Interaction","volume":"112 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-11-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127940017","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

For example, the human comfort felt during a ride is affected by the automated control behavior of the vehicle. The challenge presented in this paper is how to develop an intelligent agent that learns its users? driving preferences and adjusts the vehicle control in real time, accordingly, minimizing the number of otherwise required manual interventions. This is a hard problem since users? preferences can be complex, context dependent and do not necessarily translate to the language of machines in a simple and straightforward manner. Our solution includes (1) a simulation test bed, (2) an adaptive intelligent interface and (3) an adaptive agent that learns to predict user's driving discomfort and it also learns to compute corrective actions that maximize user acceptance of automated driving. Overall, we conducted three user studies with 94 subjects in simulated driving scenarios. Our results show that our intelligent agent learned to successfully predict how to adjust the automated driving style to increase user? acceptance by decreasing the number of user manual interventions.","PeriodicalId":109801,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 8th International Conference on Human-Agent Interaction","volume":"16 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-11-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125706095","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper, we explore the importance of the physical seating arrangement or placement of the robot in relation to the human. We designed a novel collaborative human-robot task for exploring how human-robot seating arrangement may influence interaction and the person's perceptions of a robot, and present the results from a pilot and two formal experiments (total 72 participants). Drawing from proxemics literature, we compared a person sitting next to a robot to being across a table from it or beside it, with a corner between them. Our results highlight a range of impacts on participant attitudes toward the robot, as well as their behavior and interaction with it. In particular, seating arrangement impacted participant preferences for the robot, and their use of aggression or condescension during disagreements with it. Our results highlight the importance of seating arrangements for collaborative human-robot teams.","PeriodicalId":109801,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 8th International Conference on Human-Agent Interaction","volume":"49 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-11-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124926618","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
