In this paper, we scope for research literature that addresses the use of domestic drones within our environments to understand the current usage as well as identifying future research directions. After performing a search based collection of relevant papers in the ACM digital library (N=61 papers), we analysed the drone's application areas, their interaction modalities, the target users, and the level of autonomy of the proposed systems. The results show interesting trends in the modalities of interaction (visual projection combined with hand/foot gestures) as well as important research gaps such as child-drone interaction, and the use of drones for healthcare or education, given that currently most use cases for domestic drones are generic in nature.","PeriodicalId":109801,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 8th International Conference on Human-Agent Interaction","volume":"89 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-11-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129611080","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

While initial research in HRI focused largely on evaluating the one-on-one interactions between humans and robots, the field is increasingly turning its attention to interactions involving multiple people and/or multiple robots. This talk is motivated by this 'group turn' in HRI, by theories and studies of group interaction in the social sciences, and by our own initial observations of group human-robot interaction (HRI) in public spaces. I will discuss how we can go beyond a dyadic understanding of HRI to incorporate group, organizational, and community goals and experiences into robot design. Group effects are well established in social psychology, and suggest that intergroup interactions are more aggressive and negative than ingroup interactions. Translating this to HRI means that interactions between humans and robots could be more negative if robots are seen as outgroup members, and more positive if robots are seen as ingroup members. Observations of open-ended interactions between people and robots also suggest that people interact with robots differently when they are in groups compared to when they are alone. Over the past five years, we have explored whether group effects from human interaction transfer to HRI in terms of people's reactions to multiple (as opposed to single) robots; characteristics of robot groups (such as synchrony or appearance) that may influence people's responses; tests of interventions that have been demonstrated to reduce prejudice or intergroup bias in humans (such as perspective taking); and tests of other theoretical predictions drawn from work on human intergroup behavior. While some of our findings confirmed theoretical expectations from social psychology, there were many exceptions. Many of our day-to-day small group interactions are in turn situated in various organizations (e.g. schools, hospitals) and even broader communities. The design and application of social robots should therefore incorporate an understanding of the social dynamics, goals, and other factors which are salient to the diverse actors in these broader contexts, and which affect HRI. Along with lab and field research on small group interactions, we also study how robots are designed, adopted, used, and perceived within organizational and community settings. This work suggests that the success of a particular robot is not tied only to the characteristics of the robot itself or the experiences of individual users, but depends on various organizational factors: work load and flow, available financial resources, the needs of and dynamics between diverse stakeholders, and community goals and values. This suggests that the des","PeriodicalId":109801,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 8th International Conference on Human-Agent Interaction","volume":"250 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-11-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127837350","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Social robotics research has highlighted how robots can be designed to support people and improve their mood and general wellness. However, we do not yet see widespread social companion robots in homes. In this project, we took a constrained design approach to developing a novel cuddly companion robot, focusing on simple and deployable technologies, while aiming to support people's wellbeing by helping with loneliness. We had three design goals that are simultaneously feasible and align with supporting wellness: the robot should be physically comforting, socially engaging, and require people to care for it. We present a simple prototype cuddly companion robot that implements these goals using simple, off-the-shelf technologies.","PeriodicalId":109801,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 8th International Conference on Human-Agent Interaction","volume":"9 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-11-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123942246","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Focusing on applications of machine learning (ML) to automate information tasks, we draw on a simple framework for identifying the impacts of an automated system on a task that suggests 3 patterns for the use of ML-decision support, blended decision making and complete automation. In this paper, we extend this framework by considering how automation of one task might have implications for interdependent tasks and how automation applies to coordination mechanisms.","PeriodicalId":109801,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 8th International Conference on Human-Agent Interaction","volume":"48 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-11-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124855577","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The study presented in this paper has the main novelty of having been devised and implemented in a realistic environment: a robot competition where robot tasks were developed by participant teams, robots were fully autonomous, and user questionnaires were part of the competition score. Specifically, our study was performed over a scenario configured to instruct a robot to take an elevator of a shopping mall asking for customers support. Leveraging the dedicated questionnaire designed for the tested scenario, we validated the experimental hypothesis if user perception of robots' behaviour may be influenced by the user's gender. In the end, we discuss the results of our study.","PeriodicalId":109801,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 8th International Conference on Human-Agent Interaction","volume":"66 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-11-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133655388","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The COVID-19 pandemic has accelerated this need. One such example would be coffee shops, which have become intrinsic to our everyday lives. Yet, serving an excellent cup of coffee is not trivial as a coffee blend typically comprises rich aromas, indulgent and unique flavours. Our work addresses this by proposing a computational model which recommends optimal coffee beans resulting from users' preferences. Given coffee properties (objective features), we apply different supervised learning techniques to predict coffee qualities (subjective features). We then consider an unsupervised learning method to analyse the relationship between coffee beans in the subjective feature space. Evaluated on a real coffee beans dataset based on digitised reviews, our results illustrate that the proposed computational model gives up to 92.7 percent recommendation accuracy for coffee prediction. From this, we propose how it can be deployed on a robot.","PeriodicalId":109801,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 8th International Conference on Human-Agent Interaction","volume":"65 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-08-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127782791","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Human robot teams combine the advantages of automation such as high accuracy, speed, and repeat-ability with the flexibility, adaptability, and creative problem-solving commonly associated with humans. Several challenges, however, must first be addressed to effectively leverage such teams. One challenge is understanding effective human-robot team design (HRTD). HRTD is vital as the wrong team can lead to potentially negative outcomes. The theoretical model and methodology presented are the planned first steps towards the establishment of guidelines based on statistical models that can recommend an optimal human-robot team design based on a given set of criteria.","PeriodicalId":109801,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 8th International Conference on Human-Agent Interaction","volume":"24 1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-08-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126011783","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Despite this, there is a lack of a systematic overarching understanding of personality in health care human robot interaction (H-HRI). To address this, the authors conducted a review that identified 18 studies on personality in H-HRI. This paper presents the results of that systematic literature review. Insights are derived from this review regarding the methodologies, outcomes, and samples utilized. The authors of this review discuss findings across this literature while identifying several gaps worthy of attention. While past work has studied how trust relates to an agent's reliability, it has been mainly carried out in turn based scenarios, rather than during real-time ones. Previous research identified the performance of an agent as a key factor influencing trust. In this work, we posit that an agent's predictability also plays an important role in the trust relationship, which may be observed based on users' interactions. We designed a 2x2 within-groups experiment with two baseline conditions: (1) no agent (users' individual performance), and (2) near-flawless agent (upper bound). Participants took part in an interactive aiming task where they had to collaborate with different agents that varied in terms of their predictability, and were controlled in terms of their performance. Our results show that agents whose behaviours are easier to predict have a more positive impact on task performance, reliance and trust while reducing cognitive workload. In addition, we modelled the human-agent trust relationship and demonstrated that it is possible to reliably predict users' trust ratings using real-time interaction data. This work seeks to pave the way for the development of trust-aware agents capable of adapting and responding more appropriately to users.","PeriodicalId":109801,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 8th International Conference on Human-Agent Interaction","volume":"46 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-08-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130406625","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
