Thirty adult Wistar rats were randomly assigned into three groups (A, B and C) of ten rats each. Group A was the control, Group B was untreated diabetic group and group C was A. muricata-treated group. The changes in the serum lipid profiles were monitored in all the animals four weeks before the commencement of the experiment and throughout the experimental period. Diabetes mellitus was induced in groups B and C by a single intra-peritoneal injection of 80mg/kg streptozotocin dissolved in 0.1M citrate buffer. The control group was intraperitoneally injected with equivalent volume of citrate buffer and all the animals were monitored for another four weeks. Daily intra peritoneal injection of 100mg/kg A. muricata was administered to group C rats for two weeks and the animals were monitored for another two weeks. The data obtained were analyzed with descriptive and inferential statistics. The result of the serum lipid analysis showed a significant (P < 0.05) reduction in the serum total cholesterol, triglyceride, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol and very low-density lipoprotein cholesterol; and a significant (P < 0.05) increase in the serum high-density lipoprotein cholesterol and antiatherogenic index of A. muricata-treated group when compared to untreated diabetic group of rats. The result of this study demonstrated that A. muricata possesses anti-hyperlipidemic activities.","PeriodicalId":107168,"journal":{"name":"The Internet Journal of Alternative Medicine","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-12-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131285366","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It has been associated with skin disorders. Studies have indicated that it contains several important chemical constituents mainly histamine and sesquiterpenes. It is a rich source of sesquiterpene lactones such as parthenin, hysterin and dihydroparthenin. It has shown several prominent biological activities (including antitumor activity) in animal and human-models. Studies related to plant tissue culture and agrotechnology have also been undertaken on parthenium. Here it has been attempted to attain a persuasive explanation of the existing realities, by presenting a convincing theory in physical essence of such remedies. The presented theory is emphasizing on the role of some particular wave-particles. These particles are relatively free electrons, which are freed, particularly in the “Tunnel Effect” phenomenon, which is partially known in Quantum Mechanics. Generally, in these kinds of remedies, the amplitude of the mentioned free electrons' vibration indicates the remedy type, and the frequency indicates the remedy potency. As well, the mechanism of changing \"carrier substances\" to the remedies, manner of \"information exchange\", description of the influences of some physical phenomena on these remedies, and elucidation of some relevant facts and findings in this field, have been also mentioned in this paper.","PeriodicalId":107168,"journal":{"name":"The Internet Journal of Alternative Medicine","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-12-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124158257","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The antioxidant potential measurements were expressed as Trolox equivalent antioxidant capacity (TEAC). The chloroform fraction possessed the highest radical scavenging activity (RSA) in both assays, DPPH (0.235 mmol g) and ABTS (0.264 mmol g). Total phenolic content was also determined using Folin–Ciocalteu reagent. The greatest total phenolic content was detected in the EtOAc and CHCl3 fractions from EtOH extract (108.7 mg/g GAE and 102.1 mg/g GAE, respectively). A correlation between radical scavenging capacities of samples with total phenolic compound content was not observed. GC-MS analysis of CHCl3 fraction showed that the triterpene 9, 19-cyclo-27-lanostan-25-on was the major constituent (13.17%), followed by s-sitosterol (9.61%), medicarpin (9.4%), maackiain (8.01%) and linolic acid (7.98%).","PeriodicalId":107168,"journal":{"name":"The Internet Journal of Alternative Medicine","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-12-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127073944","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

While no studies have attempted to explain why wheatgrass juice has clinically proven benefits, many of the studies hypothesize that wheatgrass juice increases the oxygenation of the blood (and this leads to removal of toxins and increased cellular health). We have administered two ounces of pure wheatgrass juice to 30 resting adults and monitored the blood oxygen level using a pulse oximeter.","PeriodicalId":107168,"journal":{"name":"The Internet Journal of Alternative Medicine","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-12-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130628008","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Exercise, specifically, Tai Chi was proposed as one of the preventive practices for falls and related injures. We reviewed existing observational and experimental studies and looked from an epidemiological perspective into the strength of the evidence for Tai Chi promoting balance and preventing falls. Many limitations were found in the research methodology of these studies and have been discussed in this review. Future studies should focus on how to address these limitations and improve their validity, hence contribute more convincing evidence on the effect of Tai Chi for balance and fall prevention.","PeriodicalId":107168,"journal":{"name":"The Internet Journal of Alternative Medicine","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-12-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131229231","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A new oil product based on an extract from the mussel has been prepared and its efficacy and possible mechanism of action for alleviating joint conditions investigated. Method: The effect of the oil on the production of superoxide by activating primary rat neutrophils in culture was measured. The dose-response effectiveness of it in reducing the inflammatory response in pristane-induced rheumatoid arthritis in rats was assessed. The results were statistically significant in both cases. Results: The oil was shown to suppress superoxide production by activated neutrophils by 32% even when diluted 4000 fold. When administered orally to rats it significantly inhibited the development of rheumatoid arthritis even at doses as low as 125 mg per kg of food. Conclusions: This oil has a potent effect on the production of superoxide by activated neutrophils and also is a strong inhibitor of rheumatoid arthritis in rats, probably through its antiinflammatory activity.","PeriodicalId":107168,"journal":{"name":"The Internet Journal of Alternative Medicine","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-12-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127812764","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The methanolic extracts of some potential medicinal plants such as Saraca indica, Withania somnifera and Bacopa monnieri were assayed against Alternaria cajani, Helminthosporium sp., Bipolaris sp., Curvularia lunata and Fusarium sp. at different concentrations (1000, 2000, 3000, 4000 and 5000 μg/ml). All the three extracts exhibited good inhibitory activity against A. cajani while they were effective at lower concentrations against other fungi also. High performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) analysis of the crude extract of the above plants showed five different phenolic acids, viz., benzoic, gallic, ferulic, catechin and tannic acids. Seeing the antifungal efficacy of the above three plant extracts it can be suggested that they can be tried for the control of some plant diseases under field conditions also. The role of phenolic acids in human health has also been discussed.","PeriodicalId":107168,"journal":{"name":"The Internet Journal of Alternative Medicine","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-12-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133427313","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

{"title":"Cancer Therapy: A Review with Scientific Validation for the Role of Electronically Modified Oxygen Derivatives in Oncologic Treatment Modalities","authors":"R. M. Howes","doi":"10.5580/14aa","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.5580/14aa","url":null,"abstract":"The American Cancer Society and the British Columbia Cancer Agency state that electronically modified oxygen derivatives, such as hydrogen peroxide and other \"oxidative therapies,\" are basically ineffective, harmful or even lethal in the treatment of cancer. A compelling body of evidence over the past few decades demands that the therapeutic role of oxygen derivatives be reevaluated. The free radical theory defined oxygen free radicals or reactive oxygen species as being destructive and as the cause of the majority of common human diseases. Yet, decades of experimentation have shown that the free radical theory lacks predictability, fails to meet the requirements of the scientific method and is therefore invalidated. This nullification requires reexamination of oxidative oncologic complementary, alternative and integrative treatment modalities. Prooxidants, some of which are oxygen free radicals or reactive oxygen species, have been blamed for cancer causation and unscrupulous marketers have brought discredit to oxygen based therapies and disregard to oxidative centered treatments. In contrast, a review of currently effective tumoricidal methods reveals a “commonality of oxygen based, anti-neoplastic action,” in that many successful cytotoxic agents, procedures or methods have been shown to proceed primarily via prooxidants. Discussions will compare chemotherapy, radiation therapy, megadose intravenous vitamin C therapy, photodynamic therapy, sonodynamic therapy, the Howes’ singlet oxygen tumoricidal system, ozone therapy, hyperbaric oxygen therapy and hydrogen peroxide therapy. Various prooxidant delivery systems currently offer beneficial, unique tumoricidal properties and approach the \"Holy Grail\" for cancer treatments, allowing for selective killing of cancer cells while sparing normal cells. This review describes these prooxidant EMOD agents and areas of possible complementarity of oxidative therapies (prooxidant stacking) based on the available scientific literature. Decades of scientific study have shown that prooxidant antineoplastic therapeutic agents provide significant clinical advantage and offer safe, effective and economical promise in the future treatment of cancer.","PeriodicalId":107168,"journal":{"name":"The Internet Journal of Alternative Medicine","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-12-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127140960","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Very little/ no published information is available on the preclinical toxicity or mutagenicity of these Bhasmas. Considering the recent controversy over the risk of toxic heavy metals in ayurvedic herbo-mineral preparations, we studied the genotoxic potential of few such preparations. Most popular Bhasmas were investigated Ras Manikya Ras, Lauha Bhasma, Tamra Bhasma and Kajjali Bhasma. A single dose (200mg/kg b.w) was administered orally to Wistar rats. Peripheral blood leukocytes and bone marrow samples were collected. Micronucleus assay and the comet assay were employed to study the endpoint of chromosomal damage and single / doublestrand DNA breaks. The results revealed lack of induction of Micronuclei or DNA damage as evidenced by the Comet assay, despite the presence of traces of transformed toxic heavy metals.","PeriodicalId":107168,"journal":{"name":"The Internet Journal of Alternative Medicine","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-12-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132600418","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
