This paper studies women’s empowerment in northern Mozambique as it relates to agriculture, considering in particular the factors that lead to women’s managing the plots that they nominally control. Women control about 30 percent of the plots in the data but manage only about 70 percent of those plots. Using a unique panel dataset, the study finds that women are more likely to manage plots when households have historically had access to off-farm labor, typically completed by men. When women manage plots, they tend to grow crops with less complicated production techniques and are less likely to grow the area’s main cash crop. However, conditional on historical access to off farm labor, their farm incomes are the same as those among men.","PeriodicalId":107048,"journal":{"name":"Food Industry eJournal","volume":"161 1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129024966","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The study utilised the Johansen's multivariate cointegration test and the vector error correction model (VECM). The Johansen's test showed that the variables are cointegrated, and the cointegration equation revealed that oil prices have significant relationship with stock market price in the long run. The VECM estimate only revealed a unidirectional causality from stock market price to international oil price in the long run. A unidirectional causality was also observed from domestic oil price to stock market price in the long run. The study recommended that policymakers, financial analyst and shareholders should into cognizance changes in international oil price and domestic oil price in their financial decisions given the significant impact of oil prices on stock market price in Nigeria.","PeriodicalId":107048,"journal":{"name":"Food Industry eJournal","volume":"86 14 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131003950","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Understanding the physical and economic effects of salinity ingress, and planning adaptation, are key to the long-term development of countries for which sea level rise has been identified as a major risk from climate change. This paper presents a study conducted in Bangladesh, which quantifies the prospective relationship between climate-induced changes in sea level, temperature, rainfall, and altered riverine flows from the Himalayas, and the spread and intensity of salinization on river water in the coastal zone for 2050. The research takes into account the projected land subsidence of the Ganges Delta, as well as alternative scenarios of upstream withdrawal of freshwater. The findings indicate that climate change will cause significant changes in river salinity in the southwest coastal area of Bangladesh by 2050. These changes are likely to lead to significant shortages of drinking water in the coastal urban areas, scarcity of water for irrigation for dry-season agriculture, and significant changes in the coastal aquatic ecosystems. Changes in the availability of freshwater fish will likely affect the composition of capture fishery, although the increase in brackish water will enhance opportunities for brackish water aquaculture. Assessment of location-specific economic impacts of the changes in river salinity, identification of suitable adaptation alternatives, and costing of adaptation are high priorities for further analysis.","PeriodicalId":107048,"journal":{"name":"Food Industry eJournal","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129766024","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Cio e vero anche per le cooperative operanti nel settore agricolo. Infatti tra I numerosi commenti sulla recente e particolarmente positiva performance del settore agricolo, che ha contribuito a riportare in attivo la bilancia dei pagamenti nazionale, quasi nessuno si e soffermato a valutare il ruolo svolto dalle cooperative e dai consorzi tra produttori agricoli. Scopo del paper e di contribuire a colmare questa lacuna. Attraverso l’ausilio di diverse fonti si ricostruisce la dimensione e si propone un’analisi della funzione economica della cooperazione agricola italiana, anche attraverso una comparazione con le societa di capitali e con un focus specifico sul settore vitivinicolo. English Abstract: The economic impact of cooperatives is usually underestimated and not completely understood by both economists and media. This is also true for cooperatives working in the agricultural sector. In fact, none of the observers commenting on the recent positive performance of the Italian agricultural sector, which is contributing to the surplus of the Italian balance of payments, has made reference the role played by cooperatives and consortia of farmers. The paper aim is to contribute to filling this research gap by investigating the role played by agricultural cooperatives in the wine production. In particular, the paper analyses the characteristics, the evolution and performances of wine cooperatives. Comparative analyses with shareholders companies are conducted based on data availability.","PeriodicalId":107048,"journal":{"name":"Food Industry eJournal","volume":"35 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-02-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115631480","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Disaggregating by data, we find that on average women are significantly more risk averse and loss averse than men, though the higher average risk aversion arises due to a greater share of women who are extremely risk averse. Through a series of two empirical examples, we demonstrate how these parameters affect decisions to adopt new agricultural technologies. By combining these results with a choice experiment over new and familiar rice seeds, we find that ambiguity averse individuals are far more likely to stick with seeds they are familiar with, while a greater degree of loss aversion generally suggests people are more willing to switch to a new variety.","PeriodicalId":107048,"journal":{"name":"Food Industry eJournal","volume":"77 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-02-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126987369","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The preparedness of guar split and guar gum manufacturing industries for these food safety concerns, high fluctuations in area, production and productivity of guar seed, high volatile prices of guar seed and gum splits, are crucial limitations to the growth of guar industry. The paper has discussed these issues and strategies in guar value chain and guar gum processing industry. Lack of technical knowledge and processing technology for industry-specific value-added products, poor market linkages with farmers and unstable trade policies are the main issues confronting the guar industry. Thus GM crops can contribute to major challenges facing global society such as food security, sustainability, alleviation of poverty and hunger, and help mitigate some challenges associated with climate change. The effects of genetically modified foods on human health and well being are at its infancy. There exist little reputable scientific evidence in the current literature to suggest that genetically modified foods are safe for human consumption and health. Food producers and processors in response to the increasing demand for cheap, nutritious foods have invested considerable resources in developing new products using genetic engineering. It is hoped that this new technology would be used to solve the problems of hunger, food security and pest control, but at what cost to the safety of the consumer and public.Humanitarian use of GR will give both critics and advocates of genetically-modified crops the chance to work toward the goal of creating sustainable solutions for global nutritional concerns. If GMOs of all types can be developed to aid the global community in reducing suffering and building sustainable communities, then we support the efforts of the global community to develop these crops and organisms.","PeriodicalId":107048,"journal":{"name":"Food Industry eJournal","volume":"7 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-12-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128758123","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
