Adaptation to the electronic information environment demands considerable re-education and learning with new combinations of competencies and skills. This continuous learning challenges intellectual capabilities and requires adjustment of mental models and perceptions of work tasks. In the last years in the FID/ET Committee work, there has been strong emphasis on the competitive environment in which library and information science (LIS) professionals exist today and the vulnerabilities caused by the traditional definition of this profession. Since the place-bound character of the profession is weakening with the advent of electronic media, telecommunication and networking, many other information-related professionals are claiming that they hold the keys to the solutions of both content and form-related problems of the field. To support the ongoing professional developments, the aim was to generate new diagnoses, treatments and inference methods to form a new foundation and a new definition for the profession. This paper presents two international projects where the initiative and the spirit, to promote the developments of the modern information professionals globally, are based on those contacts and activities that grew within the FID/ET community in the last ten years. 1) Telework 96 - An international collaborative learning package for information entrepreneurs, and 2) DISSAnet - Development of an information science research network in the Republic of South Africa 1998-2000. These two projects symbolize the concept of networking in both physical and social context.","PeriodicalId":106444,"journal":{"name":"IFLA publications","volume":"31 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134088363","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Most of the studies performed have cited the language and cultural difficulties international students must try to overcome, as well as the conditions of libraries, particularly in developing nations. In order to provide the best possible library environment for international students, American libraries and schools of library science should develop a combined approach to international student programs which includes a special course of bibliographic instruction, teaching strategies aimed toward international student's particular problems, and discussion of the cultural and communications issues inherent in library use by international students. Some of the solutions presented in this paper include (1) courses in comparative librarianship discussing the differences in libraries around the world, for both future and current librarians; (2) instruction providing awareness of the special needs of international students who are using both paper and electronic reference materials; (3) coordination of efforts with the English language learning center of the institution; (4) separate bibliographic instruction for foreign students, possibly by native speakers; (5) devotion of additional time and effort by individual librarians to international students; and (6) special workshops for reference librarians discussing the cultural and communication needs of international students. Such programs benefit librarians, student librarians, and international students while making limited demands on library budgets. This paper also provides a setting for trainers who wish to help practitioners serve a diverse audience.","PeriodicalId":106444,"journal":{"name":"IFLA publications","volume":"38 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133205949","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In their book Working Knowledge. How organizations manage what they know (1998) it is emphasised that the awareness and application of knowledge have always been at the centre of the librarians' work, therefore, it is important that companies exploit the skills of people within librarianship and published information backgrounds. But, they also say that librarians, ... need to change some things about how they do their work. This contribution aims at pointing to some of the key issues implemented in the above statement, and to discuss the required new competence areas which today's librarians have to adopt in their work. It is also emphasised that knowledge management - idea of the moment - is a part of those range of skills which entrepreneurial library and information professionals generally have. They can square up to knowledge management if they take a wider view of their professional interest within their organisation and use their skills to address not only information (particularly printed information) but knowledge, including who knows what, who knows whom, and where the knowledge resides. Thus, if they learn to promote themselves and their achievements at every level, and start to act as if their role mattered, they are well prepared to be actors in knowledge transfer processes.","PeriodicalId":106444,"journal":{"name":"IFLA publications","volume":"52 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123643326","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
