Nach Angaben aus dem Jahr 2006 betragt die durchschnittliche Zahl der jahrlich gelesenen Bucher bei Grundschulern 48, bei Mittelschulern 20,2, bei Oberschulern 15,4 und bei Erwachsenen 11,9. Meiner Meinung nach lesen Grund-, Mittel- und Oberschuler deshalb mehr als ihre Eltern, weil sie von ihren Lehrern und Eltern zum Lesen gezwungen werden. Je nachlassiger die entsprechende Kontrolle in Elternhaus und Schule ist, desto geringer fallt auch die Lekture aus. Weiterhin werden die kindlichen und jugendlichen Leser von ihren Lehrern dazu gezwungen, hauptsachlich klassische Werke zu lesen und anschliesend Essays daruber zu schreiben, obwohl ihnen dies kein Vergnugen bereitet. Die meisten sudkoreanischen Schuler verlieren aufgrund dieses Zwangs ihre Freude am Lesen. Deswegen lautet meine These, dass sie nicht gezwungen werden sollten, schwer verstandliche klassische Werke wie z. B. Goethes Faust zu lesen, sondern darin gefordert werden sollten, zunachst einfache Texte zu lesen, damit sie Vergnugen am Lesen entwickeln konnen. Wenn sie sich ans Lesen gewohnen, werden sie in der Folge ohnehin aus Neugier weitere, anspruchsvollere Texte zu Lesen beginnen. Mit dieser Idee lud ich im Sommersemester 2007 meine Studierenden aus dem Kurs 'Einfuhrung in die deutsche Literaturwissenschaft' zu einem Lese-Camp ein. Sie konnten freiwillig entscheiden, ob sie daran teilnahmen oder nicht, welche Bucher sie zum Lesen mitnehmen wollten, wann sie ins Lese-Camp kommen und wann sie den Ort verlassen wollten. Die Studierenden ubernahmen auch die vollstandige Organisation des Lese-Camps. Diese fur koreanische Verhaltnisse groszugige Freiheit hat vieLe Studierende - genauer 20 von 29 - nach ihren eigenen Angaben in einer spateren Umfrage dazu motiviert, am Lese-Camp teilzunehmen. Das Lese-Camp fand in der Zeit vom 19. bis zum 20. Mai 2007 an der Ostkuste statt. Mit Ausnahme des ersten Abends, an dem alle Teilnehmer dieselben Texte uber aktuelle Themen wie Globalisierung und Nationalismus lasen und anschliesend gemeinsam daruber diskutierten, hatten sie wahrend des Lese-Camps die Freiheit, ihre Lekture nach ihren individuellen Interessen auszuwahlen. 19 von 20 Teilnehmern fanden dieses Lese-Camp nach eigenen Angaben interessant, weil sie die Erfahrung machten, dass sie sich ohne Alkohol oder anderes Entertainment gut amusierten, als sie lasen.
