In this paper, these fundamental issues are evaluated and compared. The comparison is made by conducting adequacy studies on a real power network of the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power and on the IEEE Reliability Test System (RTS). Two computer programs-COMREL and TRELSS-are used in these studies. Both programs use the state enumeration method, and the AC power flow solution is used for the evaluation.","PeriodicalId":105076,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of 1996 Transmission and Distribution Conference and Exposition","volume":"72 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1996-09-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121459261","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper summarizes the peak leakage current statistics, the hydrophobicity and the surface material conditions studied by electron spectroscopy for chemical analysis (ESCA) and attenuated total reflection Fourier transform infrared (ATR-FTIR) spectroscopy. The results show a strong interrelation between the surface conditions and the performance with respect to leakage currents. Moreover, the results show that the surface conditions and the performance of the insulators exposed to HVDC are rather similar to those of the insulators exposed to HVAC.","PeriodicalId":105076,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of 1996 Transmission and Distribution Conference and Exposition","volume":"3 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1996-09-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129542637","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These DLR systems utilize the Power Donut/sup TM/ to measure load and conductor temperature at several locations over the length of the circuit. The effective wind acting on the conductor at each site is determined in real-time by a dynamic heat balance and used to compute the normal, LTE and STE ratings each minute. The lowest ratings of all locations define the circuit's ratings and are sent to SCADA as analog signals. This method is known as the conductor temperature model (CTM) as opposed to the weather model (WM) which calculates ratings using weather data only. These first DLR installations have also measured weather parameters at each ground station location to allow a comparison of the two methods. Data from the latest of these systems is presented and the behavior of the real time ratings are discussed.","PeriodicalId":105076,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of 1996 Transmission and Distribution Conference and Exposition","volume":"15 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1996-09-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129669752","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A six-wire gradient control wire mitigation system selected by EBMUD was modeled and evaluated. The study shows that the mitigation system performs satisfactorily under all conditions examined. During steady state conditions, touch voltages are maintained below 15 volts throughout the entire length of the three aqueducts. During fault conditions, touch voltages are maintained below 263 volts, the design limit calculated according to ANSI/IEEE Standard 80. The currents flowing through the isolator/surge protectors do not exceed the ratings of these devices, during steady state and fault conditions.","PeriodicalId":105076,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of 1996 Transmission and Distribution Conference and Exposition","volume":"94 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1996-09-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130037259","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In the new approach, power system transients are simulated using an Electromagnetic Transients Program (EMTP), while protective relays can be modeled using any high level language or commercially available software package, such as MATLAB. These insulators are not always tested electrically during manufacturing. Undetected internal failures in an insulator may endanger workers performing live line maintenance on the insulators. The live line maintenance requires careful testing of each insulator before use. For the selection of the most effective test method, insulators were purposely made with internal flaws and then subjected to megger, hot stick, partial discharge and RIV tests as well as measurement of the total and surface component of leakage current, together with surface heating measurement. The most sensitive method is the RIV test, which identified 6 insulators with flaws. The partial discharge and hot stick tests found 4 insulators with embedded wire. From a practical point of view, the hot stick test seems to be suitable for field test of the insulators.","PeriodicalId":105076,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of 1996 Transmission and Distribution Conference and Exposition","volume":"26 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1996-09-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123610737","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In the family of EMTP-type programs, these \"profile\" calculations are normally made by explicitly connecting a number of short line sections to create intermediate nodes where voltages and currents can be monitored. This approach is time-consuming, computationally intensive and can be inaccurate if the number of intermediate nodes is large. The model presented allows the accurate evaluation of voltages and currents at an arbitrary number of equally-spaced points along the line. The frequency dependence of the line parameters is taken into account. It is computationally fast and easy to use.","PeriodicalId":105076,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of 1996 Transmission and Distribution Conference and Exposition","volume":"20 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1996-09-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127612852","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
