It has some 5000 MW of generation capacity and distributes electric power among 4 million customers through 20000 km of transmission lines and more than 250000 km of distribution lines. To improve both the electric power supply quality and personnel safety, CEMIG has pioneered the use of aerial cable systems, such as the spacer cable and aerial bundled cable (ABC), in its Brazilian distribution system. As from 1991, it has been jointly working with a Brazilian cable manufacturer and an American spacer cable manufacturer to develop material technologies and construction patterns. This paper presents a comparative economic analysis of aerial cable systems and those in the conventional pattern: concrete poles, 2.4 m long wooden crossarms and bare conductors. The analysis takes into consideration the initial investment and operational costs of lines along with their lifetime period. The paper concludes with a recommendation of intensive utilization of spacer cable for medium-voltage lines and pre-assembled cables in low-voltage circuits. Only special applications should require the ABC lines.","PeriodicalId":105076,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of 1996 Transmission and Distribution Conference and Exposition","volume":"36 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1996-09-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126828906","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The results are compared with those for more traditional material ducts. The perceptions of some UK cable engineers are that cables installed in twin wall HDPE ducts should be de-rated by an extra 10% because of the insulating effect of the void between the twin walls. Within the paper there is a brief description of the experimental methodology used to simulate steady state conditions for cables installed in ducts. The analysis of the results reveals that there are only small differences in the heat dissipation characteristics between twin wall HDPE and clayware duct cable ratings are thus affected by only a minimal amount. The results also offer cable engineers more information on the prediction of temperatures in and around cables installed in ducts. It is hoped that the information presented will reduce the number of over-sized cables in operation, and hence reduce initial costs.","PeriodicalId":105076,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of 1996 Transmission and Distribution Conference and Exposition","volume":"55 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1996-09-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126862413","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It provides the results independently from other protective devices, which is an important improvement to the existing methods. The new approach, the mathematical model established in the spectral domain and the solution for the earthless faults are given. For the purpose of unknown fault distance and arc voltage amplitude estimation, the least error squares method is used. The new algorithm is tested through numerous computer simulations and in the laboratory environment.","PeriodicalId":105076,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of 1996 Transmission and Distribution Conference and Exposition","volume":"17 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1996-09-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114827414","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Dependence of the behavior of the overvoltage on characteristics of the anode reactor was investigated mostly by numerical simulation by transient voltage program. The point in the valve, to which the core of the anode reactor is connected, critically changes the voltage that appears on the thyristor elements. The stray capacitance of the winding to the core is another important characteristic value. A structure supported thyristor valve for DC transmission of /spl plusmn/500 kV, 2800 MW was developed with the aid of the understanding about this voltage behavior.","PeriodicalId":105076,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of 1996 Transmission and Distribution Conference and Exposition","volume":"27 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1996-09-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133396451","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Included is a complete model for a UPFC control system that contains bus voltage control by the shunt inverter, real power transfer between the shunt and series inverters, and real and reactive power control for the transmission line into which the series inverter is inserted. A significant part of the model is representation of dynamic limits that coordinate injected current limits for the shunt inverter, power transfer limits between inverters, voltage injection limits for the series inverter, current limits for the series inverter, and line voltage limits for the transmission line. This paper contains a simple system simulation to demonstrate the coordinated dynamic control and illustrate issues that system planning engineers must consider in defining applications for a UPFC.","PeriodicalId":105076,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of 1996 Transmission and Distribution Conference and Exposition","volume":"21 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1996-09-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115063243","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper presents a formulation to address the problem using the terminology of mathematical programming theory. Both steady-state and dynamic security are taken into account in the proposed formulation. An iterative solution procedure, which is computationally effective, is developed to solve the formulation numerically. The procedure generates a slightly conservative estimate on the loadability of a generation/transmission system. Simulation results of a test power system are provided.","PeriodicalId":105076,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of 1996 Transmission and Distribution Conference and Exposition","volume":"18 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1996-09-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130037711","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
