The major obstacles stem directly or indirectly from the conventional function-oriented software development methodologies. To overcome the drawbacks of these methodologies, this paper proposes applying object-oriented technology for power system software development. As an illustration of this approach, the object modeling technique (OMT), an object-oriented software development methodology, is used to develop a distribution analysis system. With this technique, a generic distribution circuit object model (DCOM) is designed based on the real-world concepts and implemented with the object-oriented programming techniques. The developed DCOM is capable of supporting a wide range of distribution applications and allowing modification and maintenance over a long period of time. The performed case study has demonstrated that object-oriented technology, when applied to each stage of software development, can help achieve complicated tasks in power system simulations.","PeriodicalId":105076,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of 1996 Transmission and Distribution Conference and Exposition","volume":"67 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1996-09-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130696850","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Battery energy storage systems (BESS) have the potential to provide versatile solutions to this problem for utility, industrial and commercial applications. This paper describes the design and commissioning of a 5 MVA, 2.5 MWh BESS which is now in operation at the GNB Battery Recycling Plant in Vernon, California. The BESS at Vernon provides the required power combined with both voltage and frequency control to allow the plant to tolerate disconnection from the utility grid without suffering unacceptable impacts on critical loads.","PeriodicalId":105076,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of 1996 Transmission and Distribution Conference and Exposition","volume":"25 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1996-09-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126551009","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Further enhancements in materials science technologies have lead to a design concept, which pushes the state-of-the-art for pre-engineered cable accessories to a new level, where one splice technology (adopting various cable technologies) simplifies the installation procedure. A constant, simple installation procedure, regardless of the cable type, provides an important advantage to the installer. This paper discusses the capability of the design concepts and the long-term lab and field experiences with the basic modules.","PeriodicalId":105076,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of 1996 Transmission and Distribution Conference and Exposition","volume":"10 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1996-09-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132631658","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The accuracy of the analysis is verified with both basic and full models of the electrodes. The analytical results were compared with the measured values obtained by the Hall sensor system. The effect of the electrode slit length and the electrical conductivity of the contact on the magnetic flux density and phase difference was analyzed with the full model. The magnetic field in the gap was simulated when the arc ignites between the electrodes. These results demonstrated that the magnetic design of the electrodes can be carried out on an engineering work-station.","PeriodicalId":105076,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of 1996 Transmission and Distribution Conference and Exposition","volume":"43 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1996-09-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133146671","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Containment of the impregnating oil within the paper insulation is necessary to extend the life of the PILC cable and to prevent degradation of modern materials used in splicing and terminating solid dielectric cables. While pressures inside PILC cables have been commonly assumed to be less than 15 psi, recent tests have shown that pressures can range from a vacuum to in excess of 100 psi. A new method of oil sealing has been devised using an elastomeric material and a high-strength restricting tape that will withstand these pressure extremes and allow PILC cables to be terminated or spliced with devices designed for solid dielectric cable.","PeriodicalId":105076,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of 1996 Transmission and Distribution Conference and Exposition","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1996-09-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133785412","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Comparison of the results of the traditional approach (in a vertical plane) and the three-dimensional approach proposed in this paper shows that the shape of the catenary deflected by wind in a nonlevel span may differ significantly from the shape in a vertical plane due to the displacement of its \"zero\" point. Determination of the true location of the \"zero\" point in nonlevel spans is very important to determine the accurate clearances to the deflected conductor, the tension at \"zero\" point, and the three components of line tension at the conductor attachment point. Representing conductor coordinates, loads, and tensions as vectors and their components (projections) allows analysis of the line conductor in any position in space and for any direction of wind or combined \"wind plus ice\" loadings. This method is most useful when applied to conductors passing through mountainous terrain where determination of the actual state of line conductors using conventional methods is either impossible or impracticable.","PeriodicalId":105076,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of 1996 Transmission and Distribution Conference and Exposition","volume":"111 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1996-09-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130302160","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The results of both methodologies-test of a vibration damper using a conductor span in resonant vibration and forced response test on a shaker-otherwise not comparable can then be set in relation to each other. Experimental results are presented to give evidence to that approach. Moreover, an experimental method is described for determining power flow on a laboratory conductor span. The vibration amplitude is measured at two arbitrary locations along the span. By digital signal processing it is possible to determine separately the amplitudes of the waves travelling forward and backward along the span. With both amplitudes known the net power flow can be computed.","PeriodicalId":105076,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of 1996 Transmission and Distribution Conference and Exposition","volume":"25 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1996-09-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132110192","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
