The advantages of the method are based on the simplicity and accuracy of the formulae for solving uniform lumped parameter ladder circuits of any size and under any terminal conditions. The formulae are obtained by applying the \"general equations of the line represented by discrete parameters\" on a specific electrical circuit formed by a transmission line ground wire during ground faults. The paper also derives simple and tract expressions for solving ladder circuits formed by the discretization of underground conductors which are in continuous contact with earth (e.g. the sheaths of a cable, an interconnecting copper buried in the soil, a pipeline, etc.). The correct prediction of the expected ground fault current parts in soil and neutral conductors is of great importance in designing safe and economical substation grounding installations.","PeriodicalId":105076,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of 1996 Transmission and Distribution Conference and Exposition","volume":"15 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1996-09-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121169612","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Cables insulated with conventional XLPE and commercially available TR XLPE were used as reference test populations to affirm the test methodology. Under the chosen conditions, cable life of the new TR XLPE as calculated using Weibull and log normal statistical distributions, was more than twice that for the reference TR XLPE. Extensive diagnostic measurements (water content, dissipation factor, water tree analysis) were performed on failed cable samples to bring out the differences between the three insulations. Electron micrographic investigations revealed the size and distribution of micro voids in the new TR XLPE to be smaller supporting its extended life under these tests. The experimental details of the accelerated life tests are also documented in a clear manner facilitating any archival of the data for future analysis and comparison.","PeriodicalId":105076,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of 1996 Transmission and Distribution Conference and Exposition","volume":"50 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1996-09-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121375775","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A steady state network equivalencing technique is used to construct the \"three tier\" subsystem which is adequate to solve voltage violation problems. An expert system utilises the sensitivity tree method to select the optimal set of control actions to alleviate the voltage problem. The expert system was developed using the VP-EXPERT system shell. VP-EXPERT interacts with the power system analysis software providing analysis of the network sensitivity matrix and data for the knowledge base. Practical application of the developed expert system is demonstrated on the example of the Hydro-Electric Commission (HEC) power system of Tasmania, however the proposed approach is not limited by the system size.","PeriodicalId":105076,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of 1996 Transmission and Distribution Conference and Exposition","volume":"5 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1996-09-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126623419","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Conventional electrical wiring such as a current transformer can readily be replaced by noise-free fiber optics. With an optically powered data link and a transducer, direct current, voltage and temperature measurements have been successfully demonstrated. The system includes two modules connected by optical fiber up to 1 km in length. One module is placed at a control site. It supplies optical power for transmission to, and receives data from, the measurement module, which is placed at a remote site, in this case at high voltage. This remote module converts the optical power into electrical power for the electronic circuitry, the transducer and a data communications link. The analog voltage from the transducer is fed into an analog to digital converter. Test results verify successful operation with a sampling rate of 33.3 kHz. Taking anti-aliasing filters into account, an equivalent analog bandwidth of 10 kHz was achieved with an overall resolution of 0.025% (12 bits) and a 0.2% accuracy. Together with modern digital relays this technology offers new reliable ways to improve the protection of high voltage systems. Fully operational over the temperature range -40/spl deg/C to +85/spl deg/C, the system is sufficient for most electric power applications.","PeriodicalId":105076,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of 1996 Transmission and Distribution Conference and Exposition","volume":"25 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1996-09-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131444541","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The objective is to find parameters that are both available from external acoustic measurements and usable for assessing whether a particle has the potential to cause an insulation breakdown. The elapsed time between subsequent particle impacts is a measure of how far into the high-field region the particle can move, and thus also a measure on criticality. Secondly, the amplitude of the acoustic signal generated as a particle impacts the enclosure increases with increasing particle length and thus also with increasing criticality. Moreover, plotting these two parameters against each other ('particle flight time' vs. 'signal amplitude at impact') for a significant number of impacts (e.g. 1000) always yields a very characteristic pattern, which in itself is a strong indication that the recorded signals are generated by one moving particle.","PeriodicalId":105076,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of 1996 Transmission and Distribution Conference and Exposition","volume":"34 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1996-09-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125522908","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

(CLP) is responsible for supplying electricity to the whole of Hong Kong except Hong Kong Island and Lamma Island. In CLP's Castle Peak power plant, 18 kV and 23 kV electric supplies are generated. The voltage is then stepped up to 400 kV for transmission. The intermediate control between those transformers and the major 400 kV overhead transmission system lies with a standard \"one and a half breaker configuration\" switch substation. The substation houses single phase encapsulated SF/sub 6/ circuit breakers. In the urban centres, 400 kV substations are installed to step down 40 kV to 132 kV or further to 11 kV for distribution. This paper describes the development of an online distributed information system for monitoring the conditions of the whole HV transmission system. The system continuously monitors the status of each circuit breaker (CB) together with important operational parameters, such as duration during making and breaking, operations of hydraulic pumps and SF/sub 6/ gas pressure etc. Each group of (CB) is monitored by a standalone microcontroller which is interconnected with all other microcontrollers using a local area network with a baud rate of 9600. The information can be recorded on the hard-disk of an on-site microcomputer and further transmitted back to a remote computer for alarm generation and multi-station supervision. The CLP 400 kV substation and the Tsz Wan Shan 400 kV substation are amongst the first targets for development.","PeriodicalId":105076,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of 1996 Transmission and Distribution Conference and Exposition","volume":"128 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1996-09-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128211170","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
