The author analyses the principal scenes where food has a semiotic function according to the following typology: (1) food sign; (2) place; (3) character; (4) communicative function. The culinary discourse generates social and mythical meanings which are governed by one principal structure, i.e. opposition. By establishing a series of contrasts and incompatibilities, this structure reveals the gaps and inequalities which underlie the economic and symbolic systems of the novel. _______________ CAHIERS FRANCO-CANADIENS DE L'OUEST VOL. 8, N° 2, 1996, p. 201-218 * Version remaniée d’une communication qui n’a pu être présentée dans le cadre du Colloque international «Gabrielle Roy» qui a eu lieu au Collège universitaire de Saint-Boniface du 27 au 30 septembre 1995. Quelle est la fonction du discours alimentaire dans Bonheur d’occasion? Les allusions à la nourriture dans le roman révèlent fréquemment le manque de celle-ci: dans le quartier pauvre de Saint-Henri, c’est surtout la pénurie de nourriture qui est mise en relief par le biais du discours des personnages ou dans la description de certaines scènes domestiques. Bavardant avec ses copains en chômage, Alphonse Poirier, par exemple, évoque de façon pathétique la sensation de la faim face à une nourriture inaccessible: – Avez-vous déjà marché, vous autres, su la rue SainteCatherine, pas une cenne dans vot’poche, et regardé tout ce qu’y a dans les vitrines? [...] [...] Pis la mangeaille à c’te heure! Je sais pas si vous avez déjà eu le ventre creux, vous autres, et que vous êtes passés par un restaurant d’iousque qu’y a des volailles qui rôtissent à petit feu sur une broche? [...] (Roy, 1977, p. 59-60) De même, la description du petit déjeuner chez les Lacasse met en évidence l’insuffisance de nourriture dans la famille, insuffisance d’autant plus grave que Rose-Anna est enceinte: [Rose-Anna] s’assit pour manger à son tour au coin du fourneau. Ainsi, elle trouvait moyen de mettre une part double pour les enfants et de ne se réserver qu’un croûton de pain sans que son sacrifice fût apparent [...] (Roy, 1977, p. 92-93) Une lecture attentive du roman révèle toutefois que le discours alimentaire n’aborde pas seulement le thème du manque et de la pauvreté. Au contraire, complexe et varié, il génère un réseau de significations diverses à partir duquel on peut dégager les prémisses d’une poétique de l’alimentation qui met en pleine lumière les signifiés culturels et mythologiques de ce discours. Aussi notre but est-il d’analyser les scènes principales où la nourriture détient une fonction signifiante au delà d’un premier niveau de représentation, c’est-à-dire lorsqu’elle génère des signifiés sociaux-culturels ou mythiques. Nous écarterons donc de notre étude les scènes et les détails alimentaires dont le rôle est surtout descriptif, établissant principalement un «effet de réel», telles les allusions à cer","PeriodicalId":104803,"journal":{"name":"Cahiers franco-canadiens de l'Ouest","volume":"21 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114281316","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Roberts-van Oordt","doi":"10.7202/1094038ar","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.7202/1094038ar","url":null,"abstract":"This article more closely examines the illuminating role of the «little sister» (who is in sharp contrast with the father) in the body of Gabrielle Roy’s works. In fact both Dédette and the father seem to play a fundamental role in the development of Gabrielle Roy’s literary vocation as well as in the gradual edification of her work. Accordingly, we contrast the character of Dédette with her father’s (born and raised in the dark shadow of an unhappy life), to more closely emphasize the continuity between the grandmother, the mother and the two sisters – Dédette and Gabrielle/Christine. These four key female characters all seem to have been born to create and impart joy, thanks to their remarkable artistic gifts; they in fact are a sort of Russian doll, for Gabrielle envelops Dédette, her mother and her maternal grandmother within herself, and all her stories (particularly those «stacked» within the autobiography) embrace them, in the full meaning of the word, and become different mises en abîme. We can even say that the four kindred women are nestled one within the other, just like the stories they (directly or indirectly) give rise to, for example, of the family’s exodus from Québec, which is the key to all the other stories where the grandmother is the heroine and the mother the principal narrator, and which is retold by her daughter Gabrielle. In the same way as their artistic gifts (with their extraordinary powers of consolation) are communicated from mother to daughter, the four «sorceresses» spring forth from each other and spawn the stories (marvellous examples of self-revealing writings) that make up Roy’s work as a whole. Her work may consequently be seen as one great artist’s body of work, or Künstlerroman, in which she vindicates the suffering, not only of her father, but of all those close to her. Thus, in place of the father’s book the destruction of which is recounted in the autobiography, Gabrielle Roy’s great masterworks spring to life. Il est intéressant de constater à quel point trois textes-clés de Gabrielle Roy: Rue Deschambault, La détresse et l’enchantement et Ma chère petite soeur, lettres à Bernadette 1943-1970, sont interdépendants et, en outre, qu’on peut considérer l’ensemble 56 CAHIERS FRANCO-CANADIENS DE L'OUEST, PRINTEMPS 1991","PeriodicalId":104803,"journal":{"name":"Cahiers franco-canadiens de l'Ouest","volume":"553 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122604207","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
