Consumers losing electricity supply due to constraints on electrical power utilities is very common in developing countries. In this paper, the technical and economic feasibility of using solar photovoltaics (PV) as a grid independent backup power source (which can match the existing consumer load profiles) is investigated. A system design methodology that takes into account the seasonal variation in load profiles is developed based on load analysis, PVGIS (Photovoltaic Geographic Information System) pre-sizing and PVsyst system performance simulations. This paper presents a case study that involves system design based on residential loads and weather conditions of a specific area. The technical and economic performances of a backup system, a grid-connected system, and a standalone system with scheduled load are compared. Impact of shading, a common uncertainty which affects the technical performance of PV systems, on the backup system is also investigated. Results demonstrate the trade-offs in providing solar PV backup power for load matching.","PeriodicalId":104725,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE International Symposium on Technology and Society (ISTAS)","volume":"21 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-10-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115085798","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

As these technologies gather momentum in the marketplace, consumers will need to navigate the changing cybernetic landscape. The trichotomy facing consumers are: (1) to adopt RFID implants as a means of self-expression or to resolve a technological challenge; (2) to adopt RFID implants for diagnostic or prosthetic purposes to aid in restorative health; as well as considerations (3) for enforced adoption stemming from institutional or organizational top-down control that has no direct benefit to the end-user. This paper uses the penal metaphor to explore the potential negative impact of enforced microchipping. The paper concludes with a discussion on the importance of protecting human rights and freedoms and the right to opt-out of sub-dermal devices.","PeriodicalId":104725,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE International Symposium on Technology and Society (ISTAS)","volume":"55 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132621985","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

As a perennial solution Distributed Energy Resources centred on renewable energy has become an established energy sourcing strategy even in developing economies. Still there are certain areas, especially technical, which require unique approaches distinct from the energy integration strategies followed in a fossil fuel economy. Transactive Energy provides a resilient framework for large scale distributed generation while allowing regulatory control to be exercised for integrated development of electrical energy networks. With wider acceptance of modern development paradigms that use Smart Cities as key economic movers issues of integrating new electrical energy sources at multiple grid levels in such a framework is examined for arriving at implementable models and strategies.","PeriodicalId":104725,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE International Symposium on Technology and Society (ISTAS)","volume":"98 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127827094","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Training and evaluation of persons with mental retardation has many challenges. The most significant challenges are the identification of an appropriate vocational opportunity, suitable work environment and assessing the person's readiness to be trained for a job. The work environment is treated as four types such as comprehensively sheltered employment, sheltered employment, partially sheltered employment and open work employment. The Job readiness of the person is assessed using a graded vocational test and dexterity assessment and a vocational profile is created for each individual. Job analysis is done by breaking the job into major tasks and sub tasks. The tool automatically matches a suitable job (or a major task of a job) by normalizing the requirement of a job (or a major task) vis-à-vis to the strength and needs of an individual by correlating the job requirement with the strength of the person. It also provides a framework for baseline and term-wise evaluation of the progress of each individual.","PeriodicalId":104725,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE International Symposium on Technology and Society (ISTAS)","volume":"34 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117155965","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A sensor based glove for recognition of touches is the input module to the system. It consists of contact sensors, positioned at the finger tips to detect gestures signed. This glove communicates the gesture signed to the master unit through Radio Frequency. The master unit performs three main operations, that is IR code generation, IR Transmission, and IR Reception. Based on the data received from the glove, IR codes are generated and passed on to the consumer appliance, such as Televisions, Music Systems, etc. By this method, users can configure the system for various consumer electronic devices. The system is designed ergonomically, making it highly compact and portable.","PeriodicalId":104725,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE International Symposium on Technology and Society (ISTAS)","volume":"62 3 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131928189","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Science and technology has brought in many benefits over the years but we failed to see the environmental degradation that is happening due to anthropogenic activities. In recent times, there exists an enthusiasm in sustainable activities among people but its relationship with their day to day work is not that clear. Literature also shows high rates of awareness in the green IT. But the translation of awareness to practice is hardly limited to only 1/4th of the population of practioners. This paper attempts to explore this translation in terms of self-efficacy of an individual. The study attempts to understand the efficacy of the public towards Green IT practices. The study can help policy makers and managers understand the psychological feelings people associate to Green IT activities and rightly promote application of these activities. Thereby, increasing the translation from mere awareness of activities to implementing them as activities. Results suggest social persuasion largely affects the green IT self-efficacy of an individual followed by vicarious experience and emotional state. The results specify high importance on promotion of Green IT initiatives to lure people thereby initiating persuasion among individuals. Self-efficacy drives people to practice activities pertaining to it.","PeriodicalId":104725,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE International Symposium on Technology and Society (ISTAS)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125466120","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Due to lack of appropriate or experienced teaching instructors in most of the institutions the standards of education and ethics in the education system are under serious threat. Such education system allows many students to practice unethical ways of pursuing an academic degree. Earlier awareness of research methodology and ethical issues were considered necessary only for research scholars doing PhD and was recently extended for post-graduation students as well. Government of India announced plagiarism as an academic fraud and unethical due to which the student or research scholar may attract punishment. In this paper, a study has been attempted to evaluate possible approaches to introduce a methodology in Indian education system whereby students going abroad or working in scientific research are protected from the academic code of conduct or copyright issues. A critical assessment was carried out on various imparting factors of education system. A decent procedure and adoptable ethical ways of teaching and training methodologies are being summarized in this paper.","PeriodicalId":104725,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE International Symposium on Technology and Society (ISTAS)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131873808","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In India there is a high gender gap in literacy, high dropout rate in girl students, high incidence of crime against women, high negligence in economic freedom, low involvement in decision making and very low recognition for their efforts and contribution in agriculture and allied sectors. The scenario in the state of Kerala is slightly better than those in other states. It is felt that the women community was not having a common platform for gender empowerment activities. The Sreesakthi Portal is such platform developed for Neighborhood Groups (NHGs) women members of Kudumbashree, a Women Empowerment and Poverty Alleviation group for women in Kerala. The portal developed with support for local language is an effective way of discussing issues, creation of study guides, collating reports, along with clearing of doubts, discussion of ideas, and most importantly, help women become computer and technology savvy.","PeriodicalId":104725,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE International Symposium on Technology and Society (ISTAS)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129908603","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
