This paper describes a computer supported ubiquitous learning environment for language learning, called LOCH (language-learning outside the classroom with handhelds). In the environment, the teacher assigns field activities to the students, who go around the town to fulfil them and share their individual experiences. The main aim of this project, called one day trip with PDA (personal digital assistant), was to integrate the knowledge acquired in the classroom and the real needs of the students in their daily life.","PeriodicalId":104410,"journal":{"name":"IEEE International Workshop on Wireless and Mobile Technologies in Education (WMTE'05)","volume":"23 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-11-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132347529","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

T-RHYTHM provides each learner with the rhythm of music through her tactile sense, and supports her so that she can recognize her own rhythm without being confused by other learners' performances or singing voices. The rhythm of the music given to each learner is determined based on a performance by an accompanist and transmitted to her vibration device via a wireless communication. The user studies of T-RHYTHM were conducted in solo and ensemble settings, and proved that the system could effectively improve learners' rhythm recognition skills.","PeriodicalId":104410,"journal":{"name":"IEEE International Workshop on Wireless and Mobile Technologies in Education (WMTE'05)","volume":"72 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-11-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126522752","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This system integrates different fields of technology. They are Internet control, mobile control, and e-learning. We expend the e-learning to m-learning (mobile-learning). The wired control becomes wireless control. Thus, the teaching is not limited by time and location, and teaching resources and equipments can be integrated and shared, so the safety events can be monitored and handled in time. We provide an environment to train students to handle factory automation, data acquisition, data management, and manufacturing process using mobile devices. In addition, we also emphasize the integration and sharing of teaching equipments via Internet and provide an environment which promotes learning interests and efficiency by using mobile devices via Internet.","PeriodicalId":104410,"journal":{"name":"IEEE International Workshop on Wireless and Mobile Technologies in Education (WMTE'05)","volume":"61 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-11-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123146084","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The system is designed for English oral practice and assessment for students using their handheld devices (PDAs) with wireless connected environment in a classroom. The system consists of four modules - speech, testing, learning portfolio, and teacher management modules. An evaluation study was conducted to examine how students used the system by analyzing the system log data, questionnaires, and interview. The results showed that (1) students increased their performance on oral practice (the number of times of 'wrong answer' and 'answering a question' decreased); (2) students increased their confidence in speaking English; (3) students highly accepted the learning style of using handheld devices for English learning; and (4) functions for providing students' statistic data to the teacher was very useful.","PeriodicalId":104410,"journal":{"name":"IEEE International Workshop on Wireless and Mobile Technologies in Education (WMTE'05)","volume":"106 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-11-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134581115","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The purpose of the adaptivity and context awareness is to better support a variety of learners, given that they may have very different skills and motivations to learn in varying contexts. The recent research on adaptivity and context awareness has turned towards supporting pervasive environments and this is coupled with the increasing trend in seeing learning environments from an informal learning perspective. In this paper are presented experiences of developing an adaptive and context aware mobile learning system, with examples of other systems underlining the development towards supporting pervasive learning environments. We then consider approaches for the future development of systems supporting pervasive learning environments.","PeriodicalId":104410,"journal":{"name":"IEEE International Workshop on Wireless and Mobile Technologies in Education (WMTE'05)","volume":"56 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-11-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124644341","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Learning not only transfers material to students for learning, but also encourages greater mental engagement and more extensive student-student and student-instructor interaction than does a typical lecture class. Peer instruction (PI) engages students in active learning by achieving continuous instructor-student interaction in a physics lecture. However, the methodologies and the effectiveness of implementing PI for elementary school students have seldom been clarified. This study explores the possibility of adopting PI in an elementary science classroom. The research considerations of the study are as follows: (1) how wireless technology can enhance PI in elementary science classroom; (2) how a teacher can engage students in pre-class reading, and (3) whether elementary school students have sufficient social skills to perform a PI discussion? These questions are examined by observing how the PI pedagogical model worked with a wireless response system in elementary science classroom. Based on the observation, this study also proposes a way of improving the PI learning experience of elementary school students by adding experiments and observations during peer discussion to explain concepts and phenomena in physics.","PeriodicalId":104410,"journal":{"name":"IEEE International Workshop on Wireless and Mobile Technologies in Education (WMTE'05)","volume":"12 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-11-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127930478","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Our discussion focuses on three ways that children can engage with Quilt Snaps. First, Quilt Snaps allows children to act as the engineers, designers, and decorators of their own digital manipulatives. Second, by playing with the manipulatives that they've helped to construct, children can learn about concepts relevant to programming, graph theory, and dynamical systems. Finally, since Quilt Snaps is fabric based, children can use the pieces they construct as personal mobile display media.","PeriodicalId":104410,"journal":{"name":"IEEE International Workshop on Wireless and Mobile Technologies in Education (WMTE'05)","volume":"70 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-11-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121400293","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We found that of three types of research studies identified - descriptive studies of teaching, outcome studies, and theoretical accounts of net-worked classrooms - the most common were descriptive studies. Descriptive studies, those which focused on identifying what is happening in classrooms that use the technology, point to a constellation of practices believed to be effective with classroom communication systems. Outcome studies point to the potential of classroom networks to support conceptual change, enhanced motivation and engagement, and better feedback between students and teachers. Although the theoretical accounts that attempt to explain reported effects diverge somewhat from one another, they help to explain different sets of research findings about classroom networks. We conclude the synthesis with recommendations for future research on classroom networks.","PeriodicalId":104410,"journal":{"name":"IEEE International Workshop on Wireless and Mobile Technologies in Education (WMTE'05)","volume":"56 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-11-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125464403","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
