This is a standards compliant (IMS QTI) system which permits the user to develop questions at the lowest level of granularity (termed quiz objects). Quizzes are a natural symbiotic partner to learning and therefore are equally as important to complete the learning experience. These quiz objects are structured similarly to learning objects (IEEE LOM) and similarly this object-orientated approach supports interoperability and reusability by the development of quiz banks that are searchable and shareable between independent developers. The quiz engine that has been designed is Web-based, cross platform (mobile & desktop) and feature rich and allows several modes of interaction with the user (e.g. template driven, power user). An important aspect of the system is its ability to search individual quiz objects, which allows greater reuse of questions.","PeriodicalId":104410,"journal":{"name":"IEEE International Workshop on Wireless and Mobile Technologies in Education (WMTE'05)","volume":"34 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-11-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128211296","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Some environments offer the use of synchronous communications as a collaborative learning solution for a group of distributed users. Each user is independent from the other and joins a collaboration activity by his/her own. Such kind of environments is only available for desktop computers. This constraint limits the use of synchronous communications for learning activities. Some activities such as situated learning would benefit from synchronous collaboration technologies. This paper presents a technical solution for mobile synchronous learning activities. First, we introduce educational situations that take advantage of mobility to stimulate participation of the user. Then, we present the technical solution ''Platine\" developed by the LAAS-CNRS. Platine is a synchronous collaborative learning environment previously developed for desktop or notebook computers. A specific client has been developed for personal digital assistant (PDA).","PeriodicalId":104410,"journal":{"name":"IEEE International Workshop on Wireless and Mobile Technologies in Education (WMTE'05)","volume":"2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-11-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126464594","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, the screens of handheld devices, being designed for individual-user mobile application, limit promotive interaction among groups of learners. The lack of a shared visual focus among group learners impedes group interactions and leads to fragmented and tete-a-tete communication patterns. This study proposes a shared display groupware and explores whether the use of shared displays in classrooms can augment the handheld devices and enhance the effectiveness of handheld devices in promoting communication among participants. Experiments confirmed that the proposed shared display groupware promoted shared understanding of the workspace and increased awareness of partner actions. Collaboration was boosted by creating the opportunity for students with handheld devices to perform ideal communication patterns and avoiding tete-a-tete and fragmented communication patterns.","PeriodicalId":104410,"journal":{"name":"IEEE International Workshop on Wireless and Mobile Technologies in Education (WMTE'05)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-11-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122175278","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Learning community colleges with city organisations and companies are working out their own solutions without telecom operators. Extremely cost effective ways of networking have been found with new generation 4G-wireless infrastructure in Turku now having the largest public 4G-network in Finland and probably one of the largest in the world. The above mentioned success has necessitated revaluation of the current and planned learning environments, ways-of-working and contents of research projects. The mobile sign language interpreting-research is used as a case-example. Interesting results have been gained in how sign language users could communicate in a mobile environment.","PeriodicalId":104410,"journal":{"name":"IEEE International Workshop on Wireless and Mobile Technologies in Education (WMTE'05)","volume":"41 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-11-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127885612","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A positive attitude toward innovation is crucial and indicative of a state of readiness to sustain or use that innovation. A factorial analysis revealed an estimated alpha internal consistency score of .85 for a heterogeneous group of school teachers. Collecting reliable data from teachers, with regard to their attitude toward the use of mobile technologies in the classroom, can provide valuable insights into assessing readiness to integrate mobile technologies into the classroom and interventions designed to help teachers enhance their teaching.","PeriodicalId":104410,"journal":{"name":"IEEE International Workshop on Wireless and Mobile Technologies in Education (WMTE'05)","volume":"151 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-11-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123402411","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
