We recount efforts to design and implement a framework for computational experiment management that encapsulates computationally intensive programs in an object-oriented database. The mechanism we designed and implemented, dubbed \"computational proxy\", is defined, and a conceptual design for it rendered. We also describe the functional components of the proxy, i.e. the ability to start up and control application invocations and to capture experimental results into the database. We specifically address applications in computational chemistry, but believe our work is applicable to other computational sciences.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":101936,"journal":{"name":"Seventh International Working Conference on Scientific and Statistical Database Management","volume":"709 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1994-09-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121910715","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Increasingly often the I/O subsystem and related software is unable to meet this demand and valuable CPU resources are left underutilized, while users are forced to wait longer than necessary for results. This problem is especially acute for many scientific applications which use large data sets and require high performance. The paper presents experiences with working to alleviate an I/O bottleneck in radio astronomy applications at the National Radio Astronomy Observatory (NRAO). It presents the model, the ExtensibLe File Systems model (ELFS), for improving both the performance of data access and the usability of access software. It then presents the current situation at NRAO, the solution, performance results and plans for future work.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":101936,"journal":{"name":"Seventh International Working Conference on Scientific and Statistical Database Management","volume":"12 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1994-09-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122198868","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Typical degrees of database functionality, ranging from simple file retrieval to interdisciplinary global query with metadatabase-user dialog and involving many distributed autonomous databases, are ranked in approximate order of increasing sophistication of the required knowledge representation. An architecture is outlined for implementing such functionality in many different disciplinary domains utilizing a variety of off the shelf database management subsystems and processor software, each specialized to a different abstract data model.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":101936,"journal":{"name":"Seventh International Working Conference on Scientific and Statistical Database Management","volume":"176 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1994-09-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121814548","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The idea is to find some features from the image object in order to build an index search structure. For the sake of similarity matching among shapes, the features must be invariant to rotation, translation and scaling. We propose a set of generic features that are invariant to these transformations. Each feature in the feature vector is associated with a weight based on the application, which is used in the search process. Any multidimensional point access method can then be used to build an index. In this paper, a variant of the K-D-B tree is used to construct the index structure. Finally, we define a similarity measure to find objects similar to a given query object, and discuss how similarity queries can be processed using the index structure.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":101936,"journal":{"name":"Seventh International Working Conference on Scientific and Statistical Database Management","volume":"17 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1994-09-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121350612","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We propose a new interface to scientific databases: the SANDBOX: Scientists Accessing Necessary Data Based On eXperimentation. The SANDBOX is a virtual reality tool which allows an investigator to recreate the original experiment. The investigator places virtual instruments into a virtual reenactment of the original experiment and collects data from the scientific database in much the same way that the original data was collected. These instruments give visual and auditory feedback, allowing the user to browse through data of any type. We have implemented a prototype of the SANDBOX on NASA's FIFE scientific database using the CAVE virtual reality theatre.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":101936,"journal":{"name":"Seventh International Working Conference on Scientific and Statistical Database Management","volume":"29 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1994-09-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126119859","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

At this time, we have designed two prototypes to analyze high energy physics data from the CDF experiment at Fermi Lab. The data from this experiment consists of \"events\" which describe particle collisions. Each event consists of several hundred numerical attributes and occupies approximately 10 K in a compressed format. We describe our experience analyzing this data using a relational database, an object oriented database, and a persistent object manager.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":101936,"journal":{"name":"Seventh International Working Conference on Scientific and Statistical Database Management","volume":"2003 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1994-09-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127324368","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

There have thus been several proposals for extending relational database systems in order to represent as well as query such imprecise data. Little work, however, has been done in modeling uncertainty at the conceptual schema level and in developing design methodologies for developing fuzzy relational databases (FRDBs). To fill this gap, a design methodology for FRDBs is proposed. This methodology contains extensions for representing the imprecision of data in the entity-relationship (ER) data model, and a set of steps for the derivation of a FRDB from this extended ER model. As a case study, this methodology has been applied to the design of a control database for semiconductor manufacturing.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":101936,"journal":{"name":"Seventh International Working Conference on Scientific and Statistical Database Management","volume":"25 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1994-09-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130052396","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
