Our system manages complex genomic data and supports the automation of the associated map assembly tasks. For the former, we present a genomic object model that integrates both experimental and derived data. For the latter, we describe operators to automate some of the analysis steps. To develop a framework for implementing our rule-based approach to physical mapping, we have designed and implemented an active object-oriented database (OODB) system, called Crystal, on GemStone. Crystal seamlessly integrates inference capabilities with complex object modeling and other typical database capabilities as required for physical mapping. We also discuss the implementation of a physical map assembly tool on top of Crystal. In conclusion, we provide a walk-through example that demonstrates how our approach can be used to effectively support physical contig assembly.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":101936,"journal":{"name":"Seventh International Working Conference on Scientific and Statistical Database Management","volume":"40 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1994-09-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115308988","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Databases at the Space Telescope Science Institute are used to illustrate some of the differences between traditional data management schemes and the requirements of scientific data. Data from radio astronomy are modeled using conceptual enhancements to flexible image transport system (FITS) binary tables, which are compared to relational database tables. These enhancements are used to capture features of a more general notion of an observation. Finally, it is argued that accessing and manipulating each data, in order to support the entire process of data analysis, requires the construction of an abstract data model that intuitively models how a domain specialist views the data.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":101936,"journal":{"name":"Seventh International Working Conference on Scientific and Statistical Database Management","volume":"179 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1994-09-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125817656","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

When calculating the global radiation over one of the oceans, for instance, it is essential that cloud data from at least three different sources can be accessed based on one and the same geographic grid. Differently gridded source data must therefore be reorganized through interpolation for example. This can be done in different ways and we investigate a method whose practicality depends on fast spatial range queries, but in turn provides a flexibility that makes it particularly easy to accommodate differently organized data sets-a valuable feature when unanticipated grid organizations show up.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":101936,"journal":{"name":"Seventh International Working Conference on Scientific and Statistical Database Management","volume":"7 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1994-09-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123757832","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This work is motivated by an actual case study that required probabilistic record matching using regression be supported in a database. We discuss how the regression function can be implemented in a database using rules and functions. We present some indexing and caching ideas for efficient data processing for retrieval-intensive applications. We also describe how the regression coefficients can be incrementally updated by materializing some of the intermediate statistical results. Finally, we illustrate how sampling techniques can be used to generate the data sets for regression and highlight some of the performance issues in this regard.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":101936,"journal":{"name":"Seventh International Working Conference on Scientific and Statistical Database Management","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1994-09-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129081048","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This linking of visualizations, together with the possibility to interactively manipulate data, enable an analyst to display the same data set with a number of conceptually different visualization methods simultaneously and to carry out graphical operations across them. Graphical effects in different displays not only reveal information about the data themselves, they also provide the basis to investigate how the different visualization methods relate to each other. With the \"VisuLab\", we developed a software tool for personal computers to investigate comparative multivariate data visualization.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":101936,"journal":{"name":"Seventh International Working Conference on Scientific and Statistical Database Management","volume":"13 3","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1994-09-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"120983542","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Multiple imputation is a statistically sound technique for handling incomplete data. Two problems should be addressed before the routine application of the technique becomes feasible. First, if imputations are to be appropriate for more than one statistical analysis, they should be generated independently of any scientific models that are to be applied to the data at a later stage. This is done by finding imputations that will extrapolate the structure of the data, as well as the uncertainty about this structure. A second problem is to use complete-data methods in an efficient way. The HERMES workstation encapsulates existing statistical packages in a client-server model. It forms a natural and convenient environment for implementing multiple imputation.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":101936,"journal":{"name":"Seventh International Working Conference on Scientific and Statistical Database Management","volume":"26 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1994-09-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123153294","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

All are searching for ways to harness the information and data resources that are available, as well as provide a framework for bringing future data into an unifying structure. We provide a discussion of the design, development and operation of a system which can be used to build, manage and access distributed data inventories. We discuss the major decisions we made, why we made those decisions and what the end product of our efforts has been. Currently the system we describe is being used as the data access system for the Plasma Interactions Node (PDS/PPI) of NASA's Planetary Data System in order to provide access to fields and particles data returned from NASA's planetary missions.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":101936,"journal":{"name":"Seventh International Working Conference on Scientific and Statistical Database Management","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1994-09-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129117135","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

An assessment of EOSDIS's success will be how well the data information system guides the interdisciplinary user, with their characteristic dialects, conventions and unique decision criteria, to quickly find, browse and order data they need to conduct their research. NASA is funding a prototyping exercise involving 10 interdisciplinary scientists, four software engineers, four sociologist and two librarians from the University of Virginia and one local high school science teacher. We look into one specific scientific area, i.e. molecular biology. The analysis of the current molecular biology working environment consisting of various independent software components shows several shortcomings and thus leads to requirements for an integrated working environment. We propose an architecture for an integrated system, the centre of which is a federated database system, the data repository. Its main benefits are a central data administration, a uniform data representation, the possibility of data reuse, and ad hoc query facilities. In addition, new application tools can be implemented on top of the repository easily and thus much faster than today.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":101936,"journal":{"name":"Seventh International Working Conference on Scientific and Statistical Database Management","volume":"66 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1994-09-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116256850","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
