However, the data management functionality for this field is not provided by general-purpose DBMSs. Therefore, we propose a data model of a specialized time series management system (TSMS) which accounts for these needs. The model is centered around an object-oriented kernel that offers the classes and value types needed for the target applications. The model provides base classes for multivariate time series and for groups as a means to hierarchically partition the time series space. The system offers a computationally complete data manipulation language including capabilities to query time series and groups. An elaborate array model is supported to account for the functional needs of statistical computations. Furthermore, a customizable calendar system providing a variety of predefined calendars is included.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":101936,"journal":{"name":"Seventh International Working Conference on Scientific and Statistical Database Management","volume":"16 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1994-09-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128217823","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Its structural object orientation, for instance, is appropriate for scientific and statistical database (SSDB) modeling as well. As our database prototype illustrates, EXPRESS can also be used for data definition. Following the STEP approach, data manipulation is done via SDAI (Standard Data Access Interface). Besides increasing awareness of evolving STEP technology, this paper elaborates on a common issue of both engineering databases and SSDBs: the long-term retention of vast amounts of data. The storage of massive data over decades imposes serious problems on any DBMS. Application-oriented database archiving helps solve them. We indicate how to exploit and enhance SDAI to make it an archive interface.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":101936,"journal":{"name":"Seventh International Working Conference on Scientific and Statistical Database Management","volume":"110 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1994-09-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122628655","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This broadening is a direct reflection of the needs expressed by industry, national security, health and other national agendas to include all forms of information within the information analysis processes. It includes: masses of text, forms, and documents; business, manufacturing, and scientific databases; videos; audio; imagery; and most importantly the interactions with all these media types used to enable an enhanced process of discovery understanding, and presentation of situation assessments. In order for information visualization to become a reality, a rich, flexible data infrastructure must be established. The paper defines the scope of information visualization, the emerging opportunities and uses, the related and supporting technologies, and presents a data infrastructure architecture. This architecture supports full distributed multimedia information spaces, including technologies such as information agents, metadata transformations, and local derived metadata management which turns data and information into knowledge.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":101936,"journal":{"name":"Seventh International Working Conference on Scientific and Statistical Database Management","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1994-09-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128535392","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
