Such researchers investigate issues such as global warming, ozone depletion, environment toxification, and species extinction, and are members of Earth Sciences Departments at Universities and National Laboratories. SEQUOIA 2000 is the Digital Equipment Corporation flagship research project for the 1990's. We describe the SEQUOIA 2000 project and its implementation efforts during the first three years. Included are the objectives we had, how we chose to address them and some of the lessons we learned from this endeavour.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":101936,"journal":{"name":"Seventh International Working Conference on Scientific and Statistical Database Management","volume":"68 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1994-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121904887","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

They consist of three layers which refer to micro-, macro- and metadata. Metadata are viewed as data about micro- and macrodata. Metadata have non-standard characteristics, i.e. they are not fixed formatted, are highly cross-referenced and are extremely heterogenous. This is especially true for the underlying data structures and the set of operators needed for data definition, manipulation and control. Moreover, data integrity and confidentiality need special attention. We focus on the conceptual design of metadata and consider different user view's in some detail.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":101936,"journal":{"name":"Seventh International Working Conference on Scientific and Statistical Database Management","volume":"170 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1994-09-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115700817","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The query language GTL combines capabilities of temporal and graphical database languages. GTL-queries may be related to single database states (e.g. is there a database state where condition c1 holds?) or to sequences of database states (e.g. is there a database state sequence where first c1 holds, then c2, and finally c3?). In GTL, relations are represented by graphical symbols and temporal relationships between database states can be expressed along an implicit time axis. The underlying temporal data model abstracts from implementation aspects, e.g. it is not relevant whether tuple time stamping or attribute time stamping, single- or double-time stamping is used.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":101936,"journal":{"name":"Seventh International Working Conference on Scientific and Statistical Database Management","volume":"36 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1994-09-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115014827","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

User-defined datatypes reduce the encoding going from a scientific domain to the database. Direct support for complex objects is useful for capturing hierarchical structures, such as molecules. OODBs generally have collection types, such as lists and arrays, that are a better basis than sets for the dimensional data common in scientific applications. Their inherent extensibility seems a good match for handling new kinds of metadata, and having behavior definable in the database permits transparent access to existing data in multiple formats via a common object model. We describe our experiences with using BODBs for scientific data, in the domains of computational chemistry, and materials science. We deal with areas that need improvement for OODBs to support scientific applications.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":101936,"journal":{"name":"Seventh International Working Conference on Scientific and Statistical Database Management","volume":"157 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1994-09-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132818705","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A global signature describing the texture, shape, or color content is first computed for every image stored in a database, and a normalized distance between probability density functions of feature vectors is used to match signatures. This method can be used to retrieve images from a database that are similar to an example target image. This algorithm is applied to the problem of search and retrieval for a database containing pulmonary CT imagery, and experimental results are provided.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":101936,"journal":{"name":"Seventh International Working Conference on Scientific and Statistical Database Management","volume":"21 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1994-09-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125551748","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The experiment data produced by materials engineers is large and has several data types that include summary data, image data, spatial data, and temporal data obtained by applying differing amounts of multiaxial stresses to materials at different times. The types of queries on the experiment data include statistical queries, matching queries, mapping queries, and spatiotemporal queries. We discuss the data model, query language, and spatial data structure issues associated with our environment, and how they translate into specific research problems. Another lower-level approach would be to redesign the storage structure for statistical databases. This avenue is relatively unexplored. The objective of this paper is to present a physical storage structure for statistical databases, whose design is motivated by the characteristics of statistical queries. We show that our proposal enhances multi-attribute clustering efficiency, and improves the performance of statistical and aggregational queries. This customized structure reduces the amount of I/O incurred statistical query processing, thus decreasing the response time.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":101936,"journal":{"name":"Seventh International Working Conference on Scientific and Statistical Database Management","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1994-09-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117048249","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
