The latest technology of surface mount device (SMD) placement machines have a smart feeder carrier that automatically identifies the exact location of each component type on the feeder slot, detects component's missing from the component feeders (and continues working with other component types) and allows a component to be reloaded during a pick and place operation without stopping the operation. Assuming that the components on the feeder carrier may be misplaced or some of the required components are missing, we generate an initial schedule using a greedy constructive heuristic by only considering the available placement points. The initial solution can immediately be used to assemble components for the first PCB. While the placement machine is assembling components, we employ the CPU free time (whilst the robot arm is moving) to improve the initial schedule by using a randomised hill climbing search technique. Thus, the subsequent PCB's will use the improved schedule. Our experimental result on two data sets show that we gain 58.79% and 76.69% (respectively) improvement on assembly cycle time over the initial schedule.","PeriodicalId":101913,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the IEEE International Symposium onAssembly and Task Planning, 2003.","volume":"42 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2003-07-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126877286","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper, we describe an approach to positioning parts or subassemblies on a support surface by tapping them. We have built a \"positioning cell\" where an object placed in this cell is positioned and oriented by a number of \"tapping actuators\" placed about the perimeter. When fired, a tapping actuator strikes the object producing translational and rotational velocities. The object then slides and comes to rest due to friction. An overhead camera provides feedback on the part configuration. This paper presents a control strategy for this task, describes our hardware, and shows our experimental results.","PeriodicalId":101913,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the IEEE International Symposium onAssembly and Task Planning, 2003.","volume":"161 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2003-07-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124520942","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Large cutters cannot remove sufficient material at hollow shapes of the mold, therefore manufacturing engineers must apply some additional milling operations with medium size cutters prior to the finishing. Process planning of such semi-finishing operations, especially determination of the milling region with large remained material is currently done based on a manual extraction of the hollow shape using the machine drawing. In this paper, the authors propose an algorithm for automating the hollow shape extraction. This algorithm uses the inverse offset computation and milling simulation in the process, which are known very time-consuming. In order to boost the computation speed, the rendering hardware based acceleration technology is introduced. Proposed algorithm is implemented and an experimental system for assisting the process planning of the semi-finishing operation is demonstrated.","PeriodicalId":101913,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the IEEE International Symposium onAssembly and Task Planning, 2003.","volume":"16 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2003-07-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133283549","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The objective of the plan is the minimization of the total assembly time (makespan). To meet this objective, the model takes into account the assembly times and resources for each task, the times needed to change tools in the robots, and the delays due to the transportation of intermediate subassemblies between different workstations. The model can be used in different stages of the process planning. The paper includes two algorithmic approaches for solving the scheduling problem: a genetic algorithm intended for the earlier stages, and an A* algorithm for the final ones.","PeriodicalId":101913,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the IEEE International Symposium onAssembly and Task Planning, 2003.","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2003-07-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130585498","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The main objective is to compute the assembly efficiency of a product from boundary representation geometric models and a minimal technological database. The use of a fuzzy decision support system involves the representation of this method by fuzzy sets. Each part of a product has to undergo computation of its handling and insertion efficiencies. This evaluation process depends on geometric and technological criteria. The designer may experience difficulties in making a choice when there are several adequate solutions for every part. This paper demonstrates that a decision support system approach significantly improves the Boothroyd-Dewhusrt's methodology.","PeriodicalId":101913,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the IEEE International Symposium onAssembly and Task Planning, 2003.","volume":"9 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2003-07-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128212533","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It investigates usable features for the vision-based detection of a changing contact situation between a DLO and a rigid polyhedral obstacle and a classification of such contact state transitions. The result is a complete classification of contact state transitions and of the most significant features for each class. This knowledge enables reliable detection of changes in the DLO contact situation, facilitating implementation of sensor-based manipulation skills for all possible contact changes.","PeriodicalId":101913,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the IEEE International Symposium onAssembly and Task Planning, 2003.","volume":"32 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2003-07-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115858785","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The quality of the interfaces between these parts ensures the assembly requirements and the good positioning of functional surfaces. For each geometric functional requirement, we generate a sub-assembly including the influential parts as an attribute graph. A recursive method for tolerancing these parts, based on this graph and positioning tables, is developed. The block and pseudo-block concepts aid the functional tolerancing in complex tolerance chains. An example of an industrial mechanism is used to illustrate the methodology.","PeriodicalId":101913,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the IEEE International Symposium onAssembly and Task Planning, 2003.","volume":"38 8 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2003-07-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121171014","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The learning control method consists of two processes: Global Learning (GL) and Local Learning (LL). GL estimates the dynamics of a robot control system and obtains a learning gain matrix used in LL. LL decreases the tracking errors by iterative trial movements and acquires satisfactory tracking accuracy. The learning algorithm needs only measuring of position errors from a desired trajectory and does not require any derivatives of them. As the input trajectories after the convergence of learning are expressed by B-spline curves, they are easily memorized as input patterns corresponding to specified works.","PeriodicalId":101913,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the IEEE International Symposium onAssembly and Task Planning, 2003.","volume":"38 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2003-07-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116132400","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper presents the mechanical design of a 3-rotational-degrees-of-freedom (DOF) wrist able to produce force feedback. The wrist, plugged on an existing 3-translation-DOF Delta force-feedback structure (called Delta haptic device), yields a 6-DOF force-feedback structure. The wrist comprises a stylus which is the interface with the user. The kinematic chain of the wrist is serial and composed by a Cardan corresponding to the pitch and the yaw, followed by a rotational joint for the roll. The originality of the wrist comes from the parallel actuation of the Cardan. The advantage of such an actuation is to provide a torque with low inertia and low friction less depending on rotations. The direct geometrical model of the wrist has been implemented, as well as the management of torques and currents applied. Several tests performed show the limit of the actuation of the roll compared with the very promising parallel actuation of the Cardan.","PeriodicalId":101913,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the IEEE International Symposium onAssembly and Task Planning, 2003.","volume":"284 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2003-07-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122962604","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
