The simplified model, which represents system behavior in the synchronous reference frame, neglects converter harmonics but includes an approximation of the voltage spikes produced during inverter commutation. The major changes that are being made besides lowering the permitted emission levels, are applying emission control to more products and increasing the frequency over range which emission control is necessary. The total power supply market growth is about 500 million dollars per year or 20% per year, clearly a very significant increase.1 In recent years, there has been a rapid shift from linear to switching power systems. Existing frequency changing equipment in the forms of motor-generator sets and solid state designs based on the silicon controlled rectifier had been proven inappropriate for supplying Type III 400 Hz power to such highly dynamic loads. It is a single conversion system in contrast to a widely known double conversion system; AC/DC/AC. But the latter system has two disadvantages; (1) Input line harmonics are so large (especially under power control by DC voltage regulation) that it is difficult to incorporate an effective harmonic filter network. (2) It has a power factor of lag and decreases in the further lagging direction in power control. In contrast, the AC/AC converter system presented here in Figure 1 or 2 has some good features, without reducing conversion efficiency. The commutation scheme is shown in Figures 3 and 5, and is similar to those presented in papers [1] — [3].
