End point optimization results in a three-stage process: biomass growth, inducer synthesis and product synthesis. This is achieved using an input—output linearizing controller accompanied by a novel non-linear state observer for the estimation of unmeasured state variables on the basis of on-line off-gas carbon dioxide concentration measurements. The stationary results are used to calculate the thermal conductivity of the silica packed beds. The transient results are used to find the thermal diffusivity of the beds using a numerical solution of the heat conduction equation. The conductivity of the particle material can be calculated using the Bauer and Schluender model for the heat transfer inside the granular bed. The thermal conductivity of the packed bed is found to increase with pressure at pressures below 10 kPa. The thermal conductivity of the bed, and of the solid particles, is found to vary linearly with the water content of the silica-gel.

","PeriodicalId":101226,"journal":{"name":"The Chemical Engineering Journal and the Biochemical Engineering Journal","volume":"61 2","pages":"Pages 133-138"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1996-02-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1016/0923-0467(96)80020-0","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"87708837","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The reaction can occur either directly at the surface of the electrodes or indirectly with electrochemical mediators generated in situ. A sieve plate absorber is used for the gas-to-liquid mass transfer and, on appropriate stages, stacks of electrodes are supported on the sieve plates and are electrically connected in a bipolar configuration. Data are reported for the indirect oxidation of ethene using bromine formed by the anodic oxidation of bromide solutions on graphite electrodes. The effect of ethene partial pressure and current density on the current efficiency, selectivity and energy consumption of ethene oxide is reported. The effect of using a co-solvent (t-butyl alcohol), to increase ethene solubility, on the performance of the reactor is also reported. The reactor is capable of achieving conversions of ethene in the gas phase greater than 80%, although current efficiencies are relatively low, approximately 50%. A mathematical model for the unit is developed which accommodates interphase mass transport of reactants, and product species, between gas and liquid.

","PeriodicalId":101226,"journal":{"name":"The Chemical Engineering Journal and the Biochemical Engineering Journal","volume":"61 1","pages":"Pages 13-20"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1996-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1016/0923-0467(95)03020-4","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"73750509","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
