This article lays the theoretical groundwork for such a query-based approach, deriving its argument from the literature published in the early days of databases in libraries. A review of recent literature as well as tutorials on the Web reveals that librarians do not routinely consider a user's query in their training in the use of Web-based search tools. Other training elements are more prevalent, in particular the nature of search tools, search strategies and the evaluation of results found in a search. When training recommends a context for searching the Web, the advice tends to be of a general nature. These results suggest that librarians may not routinely be teaching queries as a strategy for selecting and using search tools on the Web. Suggestions for further research are presented to explore these findings.</p></div>","PeriodicalId":101076,"journal":{"name":"Research Strategies","volume":"20 4","pages":"Pages 442-457"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1016/j.resstr.2006.12.015","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"91634220","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Online tutorials seem like an obvious solution to meet the growing need for instruction to users in a time when resources are shrinking. Can librarians effectively teach library skills using an online tutorial? Approximately 300 students enrolled in an undergraduate psychology course at the University of South Florida Tampa Campus attended either a library research class or completed an online tutorial as part of their coursework. Participants were given a post-test and were surveyed about their confidence levels and preferred method of library instruction. Analysis of the test scores indicated that there was no significant difference in the learning outcomes between in-person and online library instruction.
