This study hypothesizes that pollinator decline constitutes a societal emergency. This study reviewed strategies for improving pollinator decline through effective emergency management. The PRISMA 2020 checklist and flow diagram were utilized to conduct a qualitative descriptive analysis. Qualitative texts on pollinator decline, various perspectives, and emergency management were examined as part of the research methodology. This study identifies and categorizes multiple individualized approaches from international organizations, developed nations, and developing nations. All major stakeholders in the global arena can be classified into these three groups. The key finding is that these three stakeholders must adapt their individualized approaches through a framework of integrated emergency management to effectively mitigate pollinator decline. When formulating a global strategy, these stakeholders should prioritize global stewardship, alternative pollinators, pollinator-friendly practices, emergency training and exercises, and other related initiatives. Compared with earlier studies, this study provides a more comprehensive examination of how integrated emergency management principles can be applied to confront pollinator decline by including global stakeholders, strategies, geographical locations, and multi-disciplines.</div></div>","PeriodicalId":100945,"journal":{"name":"Nature-Based Solutions","volume":"8 ","pages":"Article 100284"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2025-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"145416037","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

At the same time, they can promote the improvement of human cognitive performance and socio-psychological wellbeing. A case study was developed and implemented in a primary school in Turin (Italy), through a collaborative process involving people from school, municipality, and academia, to prove the environmental and socio-psychological benefits of IGWs, based on impact assessment. The performance of IGW on air quality and human well-being was monitored, showing a positive impact of the IGW on indoor air quality through particulate matter (PM) removal, also highlighting interesting correlations between plant species, PM size fractions and their chemical composition. On the contrary, a low impact on the volatile organic compounds (VOCs) concentration was observed. Regarding the socio-psychological impact, despite the undoubtedly importance of the collaboration between various sectors of the public administration and of the use of IGW as a training tool for students, the impact evaluated by measuring changes in pupils’ pro-environmental attitude and behaviour was positive but lower than expected. In conclusion, this real-life case study provides results to be further used for evidence-based decision making about the implementation of IGWs in schools. However, the study also revealed some limitations and barriers in the effective implementation of impact monitoring in living context, such as primary schools. These challenges could provide valuable lessons learned for the implementation of similar projects in the future.</div></div>","PeriodicalId":100945,"journal":{"name":"Nature-Based Solutions","volume":"8 ","pages":"Article 100280"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2025-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"145416179","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Viewing FLR as a critical Nature-Based Solution (NBS), this study explored and spatially identified potential FLR options within the Oromia and former SNNP regions. Employing participatory geospatial modeling and stakeholder engagement, we mapped ten viable FLR options (including agroforestry, bamboo restoration, plantations) based on predefined criteria. Substantial potential was revealed: approximately 16.6 million hectares (Mha) in Oromia and 6.05 Mha in the former SNNP region are suitable for one or more interventions. Agroforestry and lowland bamboo showed the largest single potential options. The existence of overlapping potentials underscores the need for integrated planning and prioritization at local levels. These findings highlight significant opportunities to leverage FLR/NBS to address environmental degradation, enhance livelihoods, and contribute to multiple Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 15 (Life on Land), 1 (No Poverty), 2 (Zero Hunger), and 13 (Climate Action). Collaboration and prioritization among key actors are essential to weave this \"green thread\" towards sustainable landscapes and resilient communities in Ethiopia. However, indirect and direct measurements at specific pilots should be used to quantify the practical impacts (economic, ecosystem, climate mitigation, etc.) of such an intervention. Three regional examples of different challenges for NbS are presented: (1) Gunt River valley in the Pamir of Tajikistan; (2) Fergana valley, southwest Kyrgyzstan; and (3) northern Tien Shan in Kyrgyzstan. In Gunt valley, a major challenge for NbS is the extensive development of farms and settlements on vulnerable debris fans. Of the 49 fans mapped in the steep-sided valley, 34 were assessed as unstable, all of which were developed; 63 % of the fans received snow avalanche deposits. Tree planting in key areas of fans to reduce the spread of debris flows is a viable NbS. Widespread conversion of native fruit and nut forests to overgrazed pastures in the hilly terrain of Fergana valley together with fissures created during nearby earthquakes has increased the occurrence of damaging landslides/debris flows in deep loess deposits. Restoring deep-rooted native woody vegetation together with reducing grazing pressure in these hills can be effective NbS. Frequent debris flows and episodic glacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs) have occurred during heavy rainfall throughout the Kungey and Kungey Ala-Too Ranges in northern Tien Shan. Here, because of the powerful force of these disasters, only limited opportunities for NbS exist – e.g., planting woody shrubs along outer edges of deflection dams for stabilization. Early-warning systems are needed in the most vulnerable areas to reduce hazard risk. These three examples show that NbS must be designed based on local conditions to be effective.</div></div>","PeriodicalId":100945,"journal":{"name":"Nature-Based Solutions","volume":"8 ","pages":"Article 100241"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2025-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"144261656","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Shoreline protection strategies such as living shorelines incorporate these nature-based approaches to simultaneously enhance ecosystem functioning while providing shoreline stabilization benefits. The continued role of these approaches into the future, however, will be challenged by a rapidly changing coastal environment. While living shorelines have received global attention and integration into climate policy and governance frameworks, the ability of shoreline systems to withstand future climate extremes remains uncertain. It is critical to consider not only what works in the present, but what will work decades from now. This paper reviews the current state of knowledge regarding the response of natural coastal ecosystems and living shorelines to climate change, including increasing storminess, sea-level rise, altered seawater properties, and shifting biotic interactions. We then consider the future role of living shorelines within the broader framework of existing coastal adaptation strategies and propose a framework of principles towards increasing their sustainability in the context of dynamic and evolving coastal challenges. We argue that extending the relevance and effectiveness of living shorelines in a changing climate depends on an improved understanding of living shoreline function across diverse environments, the incorporation of forward-looking design strategies, a coordinated, holistic planning approach, and the integration of maintenance and adaptive interventions.</div></div>","PeriodicalId":100945,"journal":{"name":"Nature-Based Solutions","volume":"8 ","pages":"Article 100285"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2025-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"145464934","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Indigenous approaches have developed over time in places that are understood as ecological entities and venerated kin, not geological resource. Such socio-ecological and nature-responsive models are evidenced to offer the adaptive, ecologically ethical and responsive strategies needed at this time of complex ecological crisis. The research discussed here is founded in a complex Indigenous wellbeing concept – mauri ora - that links social and ecological wellbeing together as an indissoluble whole. Earlier research developed an urban mauri-centered “compass” that oriented users towards nature-based and socio-ecological approaches to urban wellbeing. An urban wellbeing data display was also developed that measured and visualised current states of social, cultural and ecological wellbeing. This mauri-centered research methodology was then tested out in place, in Waitaha/Canterbury, in the South Island of Aotearoa, New Zealand. Working with Te Kāhui Kahukura, a group of Māori Iwi kin authorities, a wellbeing index was developed. In this paper we describe the research context, the place-based index and its key domains and measures that assess socio-ecological wellbeing as a complex whole in the context of urban environments.</div></div>","PeriodicalId":100945,"journal":{"name":"Nature-Based Solutions","volume":"8 ","pages":"Article 100257"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2025-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"144771545","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this context, urban green infrastructure (UGI) is increasingly recognised as a nature-based solution with a significant potential for climate change mitigation and adaptation, while also contributing to the broader achievement of sustainable development goals. Although the carbon reduction potential of UGI is been widely acknowledged, several critical gaps remain in understanding its mitigation mechanisms, the integration with carbon qualification methods, the identification of influential factors, and the evaluation of UGI’s potential as a mainstream strategy for achieving carbon neutrality. This study systematically reviews evidence from 464 global publications, including 85 focused specifically on China, to address these gaps. We categorise UGI’s carbon mitigation mechanisms and align them with the corresponding carbon quantification methods, highlighting the strengths and limitations of each across three primary pathways: carbon sequestration, thermal regulation, and urban agriculture. Furthermore, we identify critical factors influencing carbon mitigation outcomes and assess the methodological trade-offs inherent in the different qualification approaches. The study also explores the current landscape of UGI-related carbon initiatives at multiple governance levels in China and offers recommendations for policy development at national, regional, and local scales. By synthesising scientific evidence with policy analysis, this research provides a foundation for leveraging UGI as an integrated and scalable strategy to support the achievement of carbon neutrality.</div></div>","PeriodicalId":100945,"journal":{"name":"Nature-Based Solutions","volume":"8 ","pages":"Article 100263"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2025-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"144903094","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this study, we conducted an online survey of 10,000 residents in Japan using photographs of 160 species to determine their aesthetic preferences for wildflowers. Participants with abundant nature experience, i.e., those with old age and high plant identification knowledge scores, preferred a floral trait group with complex traits (bilateral, deep floral tubes/spurs, and downward flower orientation) as well as rare species, whereas participants with limited nature experience preferred flowers with prototypical traits (upward-facing, radial capitulum). With the increase in plant identification knowledge, preference for native or exotic species increased or decreased, respectively. In addition to the previously-noted general innate preferences common to humans across different personal backgrounds, nature experience played an important role in determining floral preferences. This finding suggests that ecosystems with high floral diversity are important to support cultural ecosystem services for humans with diverse preferences. Moreover, our finding that preference for healthy ecosystems containing complex, rare, and native flowers increases through nature experiences suggests a positive feedback loop consisting of nature experience, preference, well-being, and conservation motivation. The loss of opportunities for humans to connect with nature could break this positive feedback loop and accelerate the deterioration of nature. In conclusion, creating opportunities for contact with nature that take human preferences into account could provide a breakthrough for ensuring sustainable nature-based solutions that benefit both societal well-being and natural environment.</div></div>","PeriodicalId":100945,"journal":{"name":"Nature-Based Solutions","volume":"8 ","pages":"Article 100254"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2025-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"144597486","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
