Several high-quality magnetocaloric materials (MCMs) have been found, but among these MCMs, (Mn,Fe)<sub>2</sub>(P,Si)-based materials are one of the most promising candidates for its giant magnetocaloric effect (GMCE), noncritical components, and tuneable Curie temperature (<i>T</i><sub><i>C</i></sub>) around room temperature. To further accelerate its practical market applications, a lot of studies have been made to enhance the GMCE, tune <i>T</i><sub><i>C,</i></sub> and reduce the thermal hysteresis (Δ<i>T</i><sub>hys</sub>). This review mainly focuses on introducing the latest efforts to optimize the GMCE performance of this material family, including doping with different elements, microstructural improvements, and practical manufacturing techniques. Besides that, we further suggest possible approaches to boost the material engineering and highlight promising efforts of applying machine learning in the search for the optimal composition and structure of (Mn,Fe)<sub>2</sub>(P,Si)-based MCMs. This bridges the gap between fundamental research and engineering to advance the magnetocaloric energy conversion technology closer to real applications.</p>","PeriodicalId":100919,"journal":{"name":"MetalMat","volume":"2 3","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2025-07-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/epdf/10.1002/metm.70012","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"145111290","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This review comprehensively analyzes recent advancements in aqueous bismuth-based batteries (ABBs), focusing on anion-mediated storage mechanisms involving hydroxyl, halide, sulfide, phosphate, and carbonate ions. Key advantages of bismuth include low toxicity, cost-effectiveness, minimal volume expansion, and multi-electron redox capabilities enabling high theoretical capacities. However, practical deployment remains hindered by capacity fade, insufficient mass loading, and electrolyte instability. The discussion highlights material design strategies, such as nanostructuring, heterojunction engineering, and lattice strain modulation, to enhance conductivity, cycling stability, and rate performance. Comparative analyses reveal trade-offs between charge carrier kinetics, capacity, and stability with halogen-based systems excelling in rate capability and multivalent anions offering higher capacities. The further challenges and further prospects are also discussed in the end. By bridging fundamental insights with scalable innovations, this work outlines pathways to realize high-energy, durable, and environmentally sustainable Bi-based ABBs for grid-scale and portable energy storage.</p>","PeriodicalId":100919,"journal":{"name":"MetalMat","volume":"2 3","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2025-07-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/epdf/10.1002/metm.70007","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"145111231","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Instead of traditional sulfuric acid leaching, organic acids—specifically maleic acid—are investigated for efficient lithium extraction. The study examines the effects of various parameters on leaching efficiency, including maleic acid concentration, solid-to-liquid ratio, time, and temperature. The results show that using 2 mol L−1 maleic acid, despite being less acidic than sulfuric acid, demonstrates promising leaching performance at 110°C with a solid-to-liquid ratio (<i>S</i>/<i>L</i>) of 80 g/L. After neutralization at pH 13 with sodium hydroxide to remove impurities (Mg, Mn, Fe, Si, and Al), solvent extraction using 30% (v/v) Cyanex 936P diluted in kerosene—a highly selective extractant for lithium—was performed to further purify the lithium-containing leachate and extract lithium. A vibrating-sample magnetometer (VSM) was used to study the magnetic properties, resulting in the hysteresis loop indicating the ferromagnetic nature of the material. The materials were tested for their ability to reduce hexavalent chromium Cr(VI), a toxic pollutant, to the less harmful trivalent chromium Cr(III) under natural sunlight, using formic acid as a hole scavenger. The Ni12P5 and Ni12P5-rGO catalysts achieved complete Cr(VI) reduction in 160 and 130 min, respectively. Additionally, the photocatalytic degradation of methylene blue, a model organic pollutant, was investigated. The catalysts degraded 78.33% and 82.98% of a 10 mg/L methylene blue solution within 220 min. A mechanism for both the Cr(VI) reduction and methylene blue degradation processes is proposed. Conventional metallic materials such as stainless steel, zinc-rich alloys, cobalt-based alloys, and titanium alloys often present limitations, including stress-shielding effects and the release of hypothetically harmful metal ions. On that account, Mg-based bioactive materials have garnered significant attention due to their critical functions in enzymatic reactions and degradational activity during tissue healing. Researchers have been actively developing and characterizing Mg-based biomaterials with tailored compositions to precisely regulate degradation kinetics, biodegradability, and tissue regeneration potential to revolutionize surgical procedures. However, the uncontrolled degradation of Mg can lead to premature loss of mechanical integrity, excessive release of metal ions, and excessive hydrogen gas evolution in peri-implant tissues, all of which can compromise biocompatibility and implant functionality. To address these limitations, innovative protective strategies such as surface coatings and alloying modifications have been discussed for their role in enhancing the durability and biocompatibility of Mg-based implants. This review further highlights the emerging field of magnesium nanoparticles, showcasing their biocompatibility and tunable release properties, making them promising candidates in targeted drug delivery, bioimaging, and wound healing applications. Furthermore, the anticancer potential of magnesium oxide (MgO) nanoparticles is investigated, with particular emphasis on their ability to inhibit cancer cell proliferation and induce apoptosis, thereby opening novel prospects in oncological research and therapy. In conclusion, this comprehensive analysis accentuates diverse applications and promising avenues of Mg in medicine and biomedical sciences.
