Although Jungian psychology provides insight into the nature of intuition as a psychological function, intuition is not well understood by creative individuals and creative arts educators, even though they may be familiar with the intuitive experience itself. This article aims to demystify the role that intuition plays during the creative process. Drawing from the fields of psychology as well as Eastern and Western philosophy, four inter-related principles underlying creative intuition are examined and explained, in order to contribute to a more coherent understanding of creative intuition.

For the purposes of this article, each principle is discussed separately, although they occur simultaneously and non-hierarchically during the experience of creative intuition. What emerges from this discussion is an understanding that intuition that cannot co-exist temporally with rational, intellectual functioning. Therefore other (more unusual) ways of being in the world, which involve solitude and a surrender of the ego, are required for intuition to flourish. These will be the subject of a future article.

","PeriodicalId":100769,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Creativity","volume":"31 ","pages":"Article 100006"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S2713374521000066/pdfft?md5=cd19ea036ab1296321c9827eaa00cec4&pid=1-s2.0-S2713374521000066-main.pdf","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"137226834","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper argues that this linear view is inconsistent with conceptions of creativity in a community of creators: Artists and designers who teach in professional schools of art and design. These instructors, professional creatives themselves, teach a creative process that is nonlinear, iterative, and improvisational. To support this claim, the paper reports findings from a multi-year study of the pedagogical beliefs of the instructors and the practices they use in studio classes. The analysis results in eight characteristics of the pedagogy used and the creative process taught by these instructors: Iteration; ambiguity; exploration; emergence; failure; deliberation; reflection; and constraint.

","PeriodicalId":100769,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Creativity","volume":"31 ","pages":"Article 100002"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S2713374521000029/pdfft?md5=f6af8e2921a52c73578ae65a0851dbf3&pid=1-s2.0-S2713374521000029-main.pdf","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"74768318","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The description of context is performed by introducing the metaphor of the space-time continuum, crossing the dimensions of conceptual space S and available time span T, each one varying in continuity from extreme tightness to extreme looseness. The usefulness of the space-time continuum is not limited to the pure comparison between intelligence and creativity, but it can be extended to specific domains. We consider here design of education systems, management styles in business, and development of a creative identity and career. In each case, conceptual space S and available time T take on different and specific nuances, allowing for an in-depth analysis of situations as well as the design of novel approaches.
