Aspects of cultivation, propagation, pests and diseases and availability for P. integrifolium are also noted. Nesom (Compositae: Astereae: Machaerantherinae), the showy aster is illustrated and described, along with indications of distribution, habitat and ecology, flowering time, etymology, conservation status and vernacular names. The genus Eurybia (Cass.) Gray is endemic to North America and contains 22 species; it was first proposed as a subgenus of Aster L.; here the correct authority for the genus, and the disposition of Cassini's taxa is discussed—all his taxa now belong in Olearia Moench. Continuing issues with the infrageneric classification of Eurybia are highlighted, the molecular analyses not evidently supporting morphological studies. Eurybia spectabilis belongs to Eurybia subgen. Eurybia sect. Calliastrum (Torr. & A. Gray) G.L. Nesom, of which it is the lectotype; it is an octoploid species. The authority of the generic name is discussed. A full synonymy of the species is provided, together with a full type citation and location of known types together with relevant commentary. Cultivation, including suggestions for contrasting planting, or sympathetic border plantings, propagation, pests and diseases and availability of the species are discussed and commented on, and selected illustrations are cited. Only one natural hybrid, Eurybia ×herveyi A. Gray, purportedly between Eyrybia spectabilis and E. macrophylla (L.) Cass., is known. Spot characters to separate Eurybia spectabilis from Symphyotrichum laeve (L.) Á. Löve & D. {"title":"1076. (Compositae: Vernonieae: Vernoniinae) is described and illustrated, a full synonymy provided, the location of known type material provided, and its taxonomic position discussed; a selected iconography is indicated. The cultivation, propagation, pests and diseases and availability of the species are commented on. The complexity of the tribe Vernonieae in a global context is discussed and compared with that of the Eupatorieae. Vernonia Schreb. sensu stricto is considered by some to be restricted to North America and Mexico, with two disjunct species in South America. The infrageneric classification of Vernonia s.s. is commented on, although it is clearly appropriate to regard any formal classification as work in progress as historical attempts are a nomenclatural issue still to be resolved, if needed. The etymology of the generic names Vernonia and Vernoniopsis is introduced and then discussed at length. Vernoniopsis Dusén (Vernonieae), described following anatomical work on xylopodia, is considered to be congeneric with Pycnocephalum (Less.) DC. (Vernonieae). Dusén's name, once highlighted, has subsequently been added to Index Nominum Genericorum, although incorrect assumptions have been made in the Plants of the World Online record, and still have to be updated. A revised generic synonymy of Pycnocephalum and that of Pycnocephalum plantaginifolium (Less.) DC. is provided; the types of all heterotypic synonyms is stated, along with the location of known type material. The later homonym, Vernoniopsis Humbert (currently in the Astereae: Madagasterinae), thus requiring a replacement name, is given the name Jalantzia, and the appropriate new combinations, Jalantzia caudata and J. lokohensis, are made.
","PeriodicalId":100348,"journal":{"name":"Curtis's Botanical Magazine","volume":"40 4","pages":"397-415"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-04-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/epdf/10.1111/curt.12531","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"143252721","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

(Compositae: Heliantheae: Rudbeckinae) is described and illustrated. Material in Wakehurst's North American Prairie planting would key out to the widespread Rudbeckia hirta L. var. pulcherrima Farw., in that it is a perennial, leafy in the upper half of the stem and with narrow-lanceolate leaves. The issue of the rank of the currently recognized infraspecific taxa is highlighted and the cluttering of the synonymy with the recognition of minor, often horticultural variants discussed. A commonly cultivated species, this is one of several late-season flowerers in the American Prairie at RBG, Kew at Wakehurst Place. Cultivars are commonly cultivated, offering a considerable colour variation in the ray limbs, but it appears that the true species is relatively uncommon, possibly having come in and gone out of fashion since it was first brought into cultivation. Statements of the species' distribution, habitat and ecological preferences, phenology, conservation status, and the etymology of both generic and specific epithets are given, along with an impressive array of vernacular names, reflecting its wide distribution and long cultivation. Comments are provided on the nectar, or honey, guides seen (under UV light) in Rudbeckia hirta. The guides are due to the presence of flavonol glucosides, these present only in the upper surface of the ray limbs. Historical uses of the species are noted, and phytochemical analyses have provided evidence that the anti-inflammatory properties have a factual basis.
","PeriodicalId":100348,"journal":{"name":"Curtis's Botanical Magazine","volume":"40 4","pages":"487-502"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-04-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/epdf/10.1111/curt.12539","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"143252715","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
