Young","doi":"10.1016/0010-4361(95)92619-N","DOIUrl":"10.1016/0010-4361(95)92619-N","url":null,"abstract":"<div><p>The interfacial shear strength of carbon fibre/epoxy resin model composites cured either at room temperature or at 80°C has been evaluated by using both the conventional fragmentation test and Raman spectroscopy. It was found using both techniques that the composite cured at high temperature showed a significantly higher interfacial shear strength. This increase in interfacial shear strength can be explained by the existence of a radial pressure at the interface resulting from thermal expansion coefficient mismatch between the fibre and the matrix during cooling from the curing temperature. Raman spectroscopy has also been used to determine the axial compressive strain in the fibres after high temperature curing and to monitor fibre compressive failure. Ruiz","doi":"10.1016/0010-4361(95)92618-M","DOIUrl":"10.1016/0010-4361(95)92618-M","url":null,"abstract":"<div><p>TiB<sub>2</sub>, TiC and TiN have been studied as potential protective coatings to prevent the deleterious interfacial reactions between SiC fibres and Ti alloy matrices. These coatings have been deposited on to resistively heated SiC monofilament fibres at reduced pressure in a cold wall reactor by a chemical vapour deposition technique. Microstructure, strength and fracture properties of SiC fibres coated with the different protective coatings were evaluated and compared. The adhesion of the TiC coating on SiC fibre was comparatively weaker than that of the TiB<sub>2</sub> coating. The strength of SiC monofilaments coated with TiC was lower than that of monofilaments coated with TiB<sub>2</sub>. The morphology of TiN coatings revealed severe cracking and spalling.
