The objective of this research was to evaluate the aromatic profile of coffee ( Coffea arabica L.) beans and cup quality parameters in response to the application of four different doses of biochar (0, 4, 8, and 16 t ha -1 ) obtained from coffee pulp, and four levels of chemical fertilization (CF) (0%, 33%, 66% and 100% of nutritional requirements). An electronic nose was used to analyze volatile compounds and their relationship with coffee quality parameters: Soluble solids (TSS), pH, titratable acidity. Applications of 8 and 16 t ha -1 BC and 66% and 100% CF registered greater sensitivity to the aromatic compounds of roasted coffee beans in sensors W1C, W3C, and W5C. The BC amendments between 8 and 16 t ha -1 and CF 66% and 100% increased the TSS content (CF 66%: 1.32 °Brix and CF 100%: 1.38 °Brix), reduced the pH (CF 66%: 4.95 and CF 100%: 4.88) and increased titratable acidity (CF 66%: 697.88 mg CaCO 3 L -1 and CF 100%: 662.56 mg CaCO 3 L -1 ) in beverages of ‘Castillo El Tambo’ coffee bean in the year 2020. Finally, the co-application of BC as a complement to CF showed a positive effect on the aromatic profile. This methodology could be an original approach to characterize beans according to the coffee crop’s nutritional status, helping in factors focused on quality and traceability.","PeriodicalId":9851,"journal":{"name":"Chilean Journal of Agricultural Research","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":1.7,"publicationDate":"2023-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"44342707","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"农林科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

L.) production under cover systems such as high tunnels, rain covers, and nets. The objective of this review was to provide an overview of the environmental factors and physiological responses involved in cherry production under different types of protective covering systems. The most important environmental factors affected by cover systems are photosynthetically active radiation (PAR), temperature, relative humidity, and wind speed, which in turn affect leaf gas exchange, plant water relations, tree growth, flower development, and fruit quality. The use of covering systems has a positive effect on photosynthesis by increasing the amount of diffused PAR, but a negative effect on the reproductive-vegetative tree balance due to lower total PAR availability. Increases in air temperature by cover systems alter differentially flowering and fruit set, impacting positively the ripening time and cell division of the fruits. Plant water status is improved under cover systems, allowing for greater tolerance to water deficit as well as improved potential fruit cell expansion, with an ensuing positive effect on fruit size, but decreasing fruit firmness due to lower Ca availability fruits. The multiple environmental factors and physiological responses observed in cherry production under cover systems suggest the need to adjust agronomic practices such as pruning, crop load regulation, irrigation, and nutrition according to these specific conditions.","PeriodicalId":9851,"journal":{"name":"Chilean Journal of Agricultural Research","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":1.7,"publicationDate":"2023-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"46379055","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"农林科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The most commonly used forage for this purpose is maize ( Zea mays L.), but due to the possible effects of climate change, the diversification of crops with shorter agronomic cycles as wheat ( Triticum aestivum L.) should be considered. Therefore, the objective was to evaluate the chemical composition of silages, the productive response of dairy cows fed wheat and maize silage, as well as their feeding costs. Three treatments were evaluated with 9.8 kg DM cow -1 d -1 silage plus 4.6 kg DM cow -1 d -1 commercial concentrate each. Treatments were 100% wheat silage (WS), 50% wheat silage-50% maize silage (WMS), and 100% maize silage (MS). Six Holstein cows were used in groups of three randomly assigned to treatment sequence in a 3×3 Latin square design repeated twice. There were significant differences (P < 0.05) between treatments in silage chemical composition, except in NDF and ADF (P > 0.05). There were nonsignificant differences in animal variables (P > 0.05) with mean milk yield of 15.4 kg cow -1 d -1 , 33.7 g kg -1 milkfat, 30.5 g kg -1 milk protein, 481.2 kg live weight and 2.1 body condition score. There were significant differences (P < 0.05) in silage and total DM intake in the third experimental period (three periods, 14 d each one) with 8.1 and 12.7 kg DM cow -1 d -1 , respectively. Although cost for wheat silage were higher than maize silage, all three treatments showed positive margins on feeding costs.","PeriodicalId":9851,"journal":{"name":"Chilean Journal of Agricultural Research","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":1.7,"publicationDate":"2023-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"44843944","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"农林科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The market demands fruit firmness, size, weight, and quality attributes, which are improved by some agronomic management practices such as winter pruning. The present study evaluated the effect on blueberry quality attributes and fruit yield of five fruit bud load levels, regulated by winter pruning during two consecutive seasons, on ʻLegacyʼ and ʻDukeʼ. The study was conducted in three commercial orchards under different soil conditions (Inceptisol, Andisol, and Entisol) in south-central Chile. Results indicated that there were differences in fruit load treatments between seasons, orchards, load levels, and week of harvest (first or second). Reducing the fruit bud load by winter pruning improved quality attributes of fruit firmness, size and weight, but negatively affected production per plant. We found in two seasons that pruning 60% of the fruit bud load level had the highest values for fruit firmness, size, and weight in both blueberry cultivars, but the production was 70% and 86% of the potential in ‘Duke’ and ‘Legacy’, respectively.","PeriodicalId":9851,"journal":{"name":"Chilean Journal of Agricultural Research","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":1.7,"publicationDate":"2023-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"46697979","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"农林科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, the practices of irrigated rice fields have a high methane (CH 4 ) production potential. Soil tillage could affect CH 4 emission conditions. Puddling and flooding through soil tillage create reduction conditions that promote CH 4 production by methanogenic bacteria. The objective was to determine the effect of soil tillage and N fertilizer management on CH 4 emissions from rice fields with heavy-textured soil. The field experiment was arranged in a split-plot design in which soil tillage was the main plot and consisted of maximum tillage and no-tillage. Nitrogen fertilizer management was the split plot and consisted of a control without N, prilled urea broadcasting, prilled urea deep placement, ammonium sulfate (AS) broadcasting, AS deep placement, and tablet urea deep placement. No-tillage could reduce CH 4 emissions by 15.58% compared with maximum tillage. However, grain yield for no-tillage was lower than for maximum tillage with 2.73 and 3.68 t ha -1 , respectively. The AS and tablet urea deep placement emitted lower CH 4 and grain yield was higher than with other N management practices. The CH 4 emissions for AS and tablet urea deep placement was 96 and 97 kg CH 4 ha -1 season -1 and grain yield was 3.79 and 4.25 t ha -1 , respectively. The application of fertilizers incorporated into the soil increased rice productivity and mitigated CH 4 emissions from rice fields.","PeriodicalId":9851,"journal":{"name":"Chilean Journal of Agricultural Research","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":1.7,"publicationDate":"2023-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"43237474","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"农林科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
