Some of the newly discovered pieces have been published in journals and Festschriften, contributing significant insights to Targum studies. Other valuable items remain unpublished and generally unknown. The present updated lists bring the new bibliographical information to the attention of scholars and researchers ofthe targumim.","PeriodicalId":93704,"journal":{"name":"Hebrew Union College annual. The relationship between God and creation makes the distinction between divine and human retribution crucial. In the Hebrew Bible there are a number of passages showing that divine collective retribution was not dictated by a doctrine or a principle but by special circumstances. David's attitude is highly significant for an assessment of the concept of collective retribution. The prohibition of collective punishment in Deut 24: 16 is crucial in distinguishing between the divine and the human administration of justice. For Hebrew religion, the personal relationship between God and the chosen people is cardinal, although God is transcendent and completely different from the world and human beings. Keywords: David; divine collective retribution; Hebrew Bible; Israelite society","PeriodicalId":93704,"journal":{"name":"Hebrew Union College annual. {"title":"Miriam, Aaron and Moses: Sibling rivalry","authors":"S. In the pericope studied here (Num 11:35-16:16) Moses is challenged by Miriam and Aaron both with regard to his marital choice and to his superior prophetic status. The present article attempts to explicate some of the philological and thematic difficulties in the text. In the light of the archaeological data currently available, which demonstrate that none of the narrative of the Torah is historical, the study suggests that Num 11:35-16:16 is addressed to a Jewish audience of the Achaemenid Persian period; a period in which a written Torah, an innovation, was in competition with oral prophecy, an older traditional form of divine revelation. By composing a tale in which YHWH himself affirmed the superiority of his communications to Moses over his communications to other prophets, the author of the pericope was, in fact, claiming that Scripture, which contained the divine word in its clearest form, was far more reliable than prophecy orally delivered.","PeriodicalId":93704,"journal":{"name":"Hebrew Union College annual.
