Although the prevalence of DM has been studied in northern and southern Vietnam, little data are available for the central region of the nation. Hence, this study aimed to estimate the prevalence of undiagnosed diabetes and prediabetes and its risk factors in a mixed urban and rural setting. Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional study in Khanh Hoa Province with 865 subjects (349 men and 516 women), who were aged 45 years and over and were randomly sampled by probability proportional to size method. The data of residents were collected by interviewing, anthropometric and clinical measurements — these factors associated with undiagnosed diabetes that were analyzed by using Logistic regression model. Results: Based the on using the age-standardized method, the prevalence of undiagnosed type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and prediabetes in Vietnam based on fasting plasma glucose or hemoglobin A1c were 8.1% and 50.1%, respectively. Risk factors were significantly increased the prevalence of both of undiagnosed T2DM and prediabetes including waist circumference, visceral fat level, metabolic syndrome, history of family diabetes, history of hypertension. Conclusion: The findings of our study were showed that the high proportions of prediabetes and undiagnosed diabetes in Vietnam. Our results suggest that the barriers to accessing screening programs and factors related to inadequate glycemic control should be investigated. Hence, the public health system should be playing the role of increasing awareness of and screening for diabetes in the community.","PeriodicalId":93578,"journal":{"name":"Journal of global health science","volume":"70 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-05-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"89150688","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The quality of antenatal care in Laos remains inadequate. This study aims to assess the quality of the public antenatal care service in a real life setting and to investigate differences in results between overt and covert observation as ways to identify where interventions are most needed. Methods: This health-facility based, cross-sectional observation study compared overt and covert observation to identify strong and weak points during antenatal visits. Four trained nurses and midwives assessed performance using a World Health Organization checklist. For covert observation, research assistants posed as relatives of pregnant women attending an antenatal care session. Results: One hundred and fifty-four pregnant women were analyzed. Overall performance was poor for both overt and covert observation, but the scores for most items were lower when observation was covert. Provision of health promotion was insufficient. Less than one quarter of cases were advised to eat a variety of food during pregnancy, and none of the health providers provided counseling. Communication skills, behavior and attitude of health providers were highly inadequate. Less than a quarter of pregnant women were treated with kindness and respect. Less than 10% of available information materials were used during ANC session. Overall mean (standard deviation) time-spent for each ANC session was 15.3 (4.4) minutes. Conclusion: Using covert rather than only overt observation to identify where the antenatal care needs to be improved added detailed information on where improvement is needed. The level of performance was already inadequate when health workers knew they were being observed but it declined even further on most items when they were unaware of the observation. These findings can guide efforts to improve the quality of ANC services in Laos.","PeriodicalId":93578,"journal":{"name":"Journal of global health science","volume":"36 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-05-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"85313199","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Maternal health services, including antenatal, delivery and postnatal care, are proven to be effective for lowering the level of maternal morbidity and mortality, but their usage levels are often suboptimal in LMICs. In this regard, this study aims to explore factors associated with the utilization of maternal health care (MHC) services among Chadian women. Methods: A composite measure of MHC utilization, encompassing antenatal, delivery, and postnatal stages, has been adaptively constructed to better reflect the level of access to MHC in Chad. This outcome variable has 4-level categories (lowest, mid-low, mid-high, and highest), which incorporates the levels of utilization of prenatal, delivery and postnatal care. Using the data drawn from 2014–2015 Chad Demographic and Health Survey, a multivariate ordered logistic regression was fitted to identify factors affecting the utilization of MHC in Chad. Results: Only a very marginalized portion (7%) of women reported utilizing all the 3 MHC services. Factors found to have significant associations with MHC utilization were mothers' education, husbands/partners' education and occupation, marriage type, access to media, current use of contraceptives, household wealth level, regions, and place of residence. Conclusion: Our study suggests that it is imperative to promote overall levels of MHC service utilization in Chad to address the country's very high maternal burden. Efforts for promoting community-level maternal health activities that involve both women and men might help. In a longer-term, future maternal health programs would need to involve more proactively women from lower socioeconomic status and less developed areas tackling withincountry health inequalities, while the government strives to improve the country's overall socioeconomic status and health infrastructure.","PeriodicalId":93578,"journal":{"name":"Journal of global health science","volume":"26 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-05-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"83343070","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The Region is rapidly and constantly changing. Unprecedented economic growth, migration and urbanization have created opportunities for better lives that many people could not have imagined a generation ago. Yet these social, economic and demographic changes have also created new health challenges: the ever-present risk of health emergencies and the emergence of new health security threats; an increase in noncommunicable diseases (NCDs); and air pollution, climate change and other environmental changes are all putting people's health at risk. At the same time, some countries' populations are rapidly getting older, while others are still facing a significant burden of disease from “traditional” health threats, including infectious diseases and infant and maternal mortality.","PeriodicalId":93578,"journal":{"name":"Journal of global health science","volume":"9 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-05-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"79705418","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We assessed the effect of KOFIH's comprehensive program on institutional delivery. Methods: We used two waves of Demographic and Health Survey collected in 2010 and 2014. The outcome measures were a delivery at a public facility and any type of facility (public or private). A difference-in-difference approach compared changes of the intervention group (Battambang province) with the control group (other 24 provinces) in terms of institutional delivery before and after program implementation. Results: Both intervention and control group showed an increase in both outcomes. Compared with a control group, the odds of giving birth to a baby at public facility or any type of health facility in the afterrelative to the before-period were significantly higher in Battambang province (odds ratio [OR], 2.12; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.26–3.57 for delivery at the public facility and OR, 2.08; 95% CI, 1.00–4.30 for delivery at any type of facility). Conclusion: Comprehensive maternal and child health program performed by KOFIH in the Battambang area of Cambodia increased the use of institutional (public or any type) delivery. Recipient-driven, a need-based and comprehensive approach might have led to a positive effect.","PeriodicalId":93578,"journal":{"name":"Journal of global health science","volume":"7 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-05-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"74428017","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
