The results indicated that workplace incivility had a significant effect on healthcare workers’ secondary traumatic stress and mental health; however, it has an insignificant impact on psychological resilience. Moreover, the findings revealed that psychological resilience has a significant impact on mental health and an insignificant impact on secondary traumatic stress. Furthermore, the results highlighted that psychological resilience partially mediates the relationship between workplace incivility and mental health; however, it has no mediating role between workplace incivility and secondary traumatic stress. Since a perfectly lightweight and long-lasting device cannot exist, the field seeks to optimize device options to suit the needs, desires, and lives of patients. The research described in this paper aims to understand through semi-structured interviews the experiences and interests of oxygen patients with respect to travel, mobility, and use of oxygen tanks and portable and stationary oxygen concentrators. We know that patients prefer devices that are “easy to use,” and we sought to clarify what this means and to prepare a more standardized measure of ease of use by developing an Absolute Ease of Use Scale for oxygen users. We also know that patients want a lightweight and long-lasting device, but we challenged patients to choose from specific lighter and heavier options associated with various battery lives. We probed where patients travel with their devices – and asked where else they would travel, if only their devices could be even lighter and last longer. Overall, a diverse picture emerges of widely varying preferences for time/weight tradeoffs and strategies for travel with these devices.</div></div>","PeriodicalId":93564,"journal":{"name":"Human factors in healthcare","volume":"7 ","pages":"Article 100090"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2025-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"143164706","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The application requires data demonstrating the generic drug is not only pharmaceutically equivalent, but also that any associated device administering the drug is interchangeable from a human factors perspective. In 2017, the FDA made available the draft guidance for industry entitled “Comparative Analyses and Related Comparative Use Human Factors Studies for a Drug-Device Combination Product Submitted in an ANDA”. This project surveyed key human factors stakeholders utilizing the guidance to identify the methods employed and potential gaps in the Comparative Use Human Factors (CUHF) process. Participants included human factors experts involved in preparing generic combination products for FDA approval. After completing a 10-question, IRB approved questionnaire participants were invited to participate in a 30 min virtual interview. The scripted interview probed for the participants’ expertise, types of combination products supported, experience conducting CUHF studies, and perceived best practices/challenges of the CUHF process outlined in the draft guidance. A total of 14 participants completed the questionnaire with 9 participating in follow-up interviews. Interview transcripts were reviewed by 2 researchers and coded by topic for further analysis. Results indicate HF experts appreciate specific expectations outlining the threshold analysis and identifying the method as a systematic, well-defined process. Challenges reported from the guidance include frustration with objectives that vary compared to other FDA guidance's, a challenging process for calculating sample size, difficulty obtaining historical device data for a comparative assessment, a lack of methodology to compute and categorize errors, failure to address severity of errors, and confusion calculating acceptable error rates. Hand hygiene (HH)—which includes hand washing with soap and water and hand rubbing with alcohol-based hand sanitizer—is the primary tool used by healthcare personnel (HCP) to prevent HAIs. Consequently, the World Health Organization (WHO) proposed guidelines for effective HH in healthcare settings. However, consistent performance of HH by HCP is still lacking. HH in healthcare requires both compliance with indications for HH and quality of HH. Integrative approaches in human factors engineering (HFE) and infection prevention can be used to promote sustainable techniques that can be implemented by HCP to improve the quality of HH techniques. This research proposes a three-phase integrative approach that uses HFE-based methods to identify why HH is often insufficiently executed by HCP in hospital settings and ultimately to help guide HCP to improve HH quality. We performed i) a tabular task analysis (TTA), constructed by HFE personnel and infection prevention specialists, ii) card sorting with infection prevention subject matter experts to prioritize HH steps and analyzed with criticality analysis and subsequent modifications to the TTA, and iii) TTA validation and verification with subject matter experts. Finally, we conducted qualitative interviews with members of hospital leadership and determined that it is feasible to implement the use of TTAs in hospital settings. This research provides enhanced HH guidance using an integrative HFE-based approach and is directed to increase the quality of HH performed by HCP, thereby reducing HAI rates and improving patient safety. Furthermore, these results can be used to support the effective implementation of the WHO's HH guidance. Despite its crucial nature, no validated scale exists for assessing adaptive performance in either English or Dutch. This project aims to rectify this deficiency by providing researchers with a reliable and validated instrument to measure adaptive performance. The French scale was translated into English and Dutch using forward and backward translation techniques and was pretested by healthcare professionals. A uniform interpretation of the translations was achieved, and the final questionnaires were distributed to healthcare professionals. We explored the dimensionality of the scales using factor analysis and tested for reliability and validity. Questionnaires were completed by 283 English-speaking and 306 Dutch-speaking respondents. Both questionnaires demonstrated good internal consistency (Cronbach's alpha 0.87) and convergent and discriminant validity. Minor issues were addressed. This analysis presents a dependable and legitimate tool for the further exploration of adaptive performance. The primary focus of this project was on healthcare professionals. The secondary purpose was to explore the efficacy of ongoing implementation of an innovative KTA-Sprint framework through usability testing of the Caretown module.</p></div><div><h3>Methods</h3><p>Guided by the KTA-Sprint framework, seven core features of the Caretown module were designed through a multi-method approach: symptom live reports, care cards, trends, medication wallet, medical events timeline, messenger, and caregiver resources.</p></div><div><h3>Results and discussion</h3><p>We tested the prototype of the module with seven informal caregivers. Findings from quantitative usability metrics and qualitative interviews were translated into required refinements (e.g., how to improve intuitiveness of icons, interpretation of presented data, and system navigation) and mapped onto a subset of Ravden checklist domains. Qualitative usability feedback highlighted opportunities to further improve: visual clarity, consistency, compatibility with user expectations, how to provide informative feedback with clear structure, functionality, flexibility and control. Throughout the design process, we identified considerations for supporting future implementation outcomes including equity, acceptability, adoption, appropriateness, and fidelity. Moreover, the KTA-Sprint framework effectively guided the design and evaluation process for the Caretown module.</p></div><div><h3>Conclusions</h3><p>This development and usability testing of the Caretown module illustrates the implementation of the rapid and iterative KTA-Sprint framework. Scenario-based testing and multi-method analyses of user feedback allowed for triangulation of feedback. Results informed key considerations for product deployment and future implementation.</p></div>","PeriodicalId":93564,"journal":{"name":"Human factors in healthcare","volume":"6 ","pages":"Article 100081"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S2772501424000186/pdfft?md5=5765da7b4a1b16df398476fea26f0c73&pid=1-s2.0-S2772501424000186-main.pdf","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141701544","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
