In this commentary, we explain how artistic research can be considered within its own paradigm which differs methodologically and epistemologically to quantitative and qualitative research paradigms. This difference is critical and demands that artistic research attends to process-oriented questions and the ineffability of the knowledge it generates. By contrasting paradigms, we argue that research within the performative research paradigm uniquely generates practice-based insights, through artistic processes, that are embodied and non-representational. However, in some cases, they do not make this inference. Instead, they make separate inferences about each of the individual hypotheses that comprise the joint hypothesis (e.g., <em>H</em><sub><em>1,1</em></sub> and <em>H</em><sub><em>1,2</em></sub>). For example, a researcher might use a Bonferroni correction to adjust their alpha level from the conventional level of 0.050 to 0.025 when testing <em>H</em><sub><em>1,1</em></sub> and <em>H</em><sub><em>1,2</em></sub>, find a significant result for <em>H</em><sub><em>1,1</em></sub> (<em>p</em> < 0.025) and not for <em>H</em><sub><em>1,2</em></sub> (<em>p</em> > 0.025), and so claim support for <em>H</em><sub><em>1,1</em></sub> and not for <em>H</em><sub><em>1,2</em></sub>. However, these separate <em>individual</em> inferences do not require an alpha adjustment. Only a statistical inference about the union alternative hypothesis “<em>H</em><sub><em>1,1</em></sub> or <em>H</em><sub><em>1,2</em></sub>” requires an alpha adjustment because it is based on “at least one” significant result among the two tests, and so it refers to the familywise error rate. Hence, an <em>inconsistent correction</em> occurs when a researcher corrects their alpha level during multiple testing but does not make an inference about a union alternative hypothesis. In the present article, I discuss this inconsistent correction problem, including its reduction in statistical power for tests of individual hypotheses and its potential causes vis-à-vis <em>error rate confusions</em> and the <em>alpha adjustment ritual</em>. I also provide three illustrations of inconsistent corrections from recent psychology studies. I conclude that inconsistent corrections represent a symptom of <em>statisticism</em>, and I call for a more nuanced inference-based approach to multiple testing corrections.</p></div>","PeriodicalId":93338,"journal":{"name":"Methods in Psychology (Online)","volume":"10 ","pages":"Article 100140"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-03-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S2590260124000067/pdfft?md5=3c67ce757bf603e0af51249904d49c3b&pid=1-s2.0-S2590260124000067-main.pdf","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140330674","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Over an 18 month period in 2022/23, Masculinities and Mental Health used bottom-up, culturally responsive, arts and health workshops to seek to understand the cultural causes of stress and depression reported by men in Luo and Busoga cultures. The project included a two month arts-based residency in Osiri village, Kisumu County (Kenya) and a four week residency in Walukuba, Jinja (Uganda) working with groups of men to explore definitions of mental health via arts-based research methodologies. This article will present examples from the research whilst critically interrogating the possibilities of arts-based research contributing to an ongoing process of decolonising mental health practices in East Africa. The paper is focused on three dilemmas and learnings that occurred during the project; balancing the relationship between popular and progressive ideas in health care research, the complications of developing the 'art' in arts-based research and the inherent limitations of arts-based research in developing impact. I argue that arts-based research can effectively contribute to wider efforts of decolonising mental health by enabling participatory spaces to explore indigenous knowledge and lived experience. However, such efforts could be advanced if arts-based research engaged with systemic structures which enforce Global North practices and ignore culturally specific understandings of mental health.</p></div>","PeriodicalId":93338,"journal":{"name":"Methods in Psychology (Online)","volume":"10 ","pages":"Article 100137"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-03-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S2590260124000031/pdfft?md5=6155f956885b6617181bc83b674fb460&pid=1-s2.0-S2590260124000031-main.pdf","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140296019","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
