Research design: A cross-sectional survey was conducted on 398 women from two rural districts in Zimbabwe. Data on socio-demography, pregnancy related information as well as traditional medicine use patterns was collected using a structured interviewer administered questionnaire. Convenient sampling was used to recruit women of childbearing age who were either pregnant at the time of the study, or had previously given birth. Results: The prevalence of traditional medicine used during pregnancy and at labour was 69.9% and only 17.3% used these medicines for postpartum care. During pregnancy, 27.7% used soil from a mole hill, 21.6% used elephant dung, and 13.3% used Fadogia ancylantha. These medicines were mainly used to facilitate labour (43.5%), avoid tears/stitches (19.7%), make delivery easy and safe (18.3%) and to avoid prolonged labour (5%). Only 9% of the participants however reported to have experienced adverse effects from using traditional medicines. Conclusion: The use of traditional remedies in different forms during pregnancy and at labour was very common as confirmed by the high prevalence rate of 69.9%. Some of the women however used more than one type of traditional medicine during pregnancy, labour and for postpartum care. The exact effects of some of these medicines on both the mother and infant however, are not known, and there is therefore a need for them to be studied in greater detail.","PeriodicalId":92765,"journal":{"name":"Clinics in mother and child health","volume":"16 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-04-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"45932956","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study is aimed at assessing factors associated with utilization of IMNCI protocol by nurses West Arsi Zone, Oromia Region, Ethiopia. Methods: An institutional based cross-sectional study was conducted on a total of 185 nurses who were included from health facilities selected using simple random sampling technique. Data was coded, entered and cleaned using Epi-data 3.1 and exported to SPSS version 22 for analysis. Univariate and bivariate analysis was performed. Multivariate analysis was also done to control for possible confounding variables. Results: Data were obtained from 185 nurses, of which 131 (70.8%) were males. More than half 103 (55.7%) of the respondents was aged between 25-29 years. The mean (± SD) age was 26.65 ± (1.7) with the range of 20-43 years and 107 (57.8%) were diploma nurses. The overall IMNCI protocol utilization was 58.7%. In multivariate analysis, the odd of IMNCI utilizations among nurses who had attended IMNCI training were 2.76 times higher compared to nurses who had not attended IMNCI training [AOR=2.76, 95% CI:1.388, 5.51]. Nurses who had practice of always referring chart booklet during every case management process were three times more likely to utilize IMNCI protocols [AOR=2.95, 95% CI: 1.48, 5.89] compared to their counterparts. Conclusions: The proportion of IMNCI utilizations in the selected districts was low and less than the WHO recommendations. Training and frequent referring of chart booklet were found to significantly associate with the utilization of the IMNCI protocols. Therefore the emphasis should be given to the provision of IMNCI training to the nurse by the stakeholders and motivating the nurses to always refer chart booklet, in order to enhance proper utilization of the protocols.","PeriodicalId":92765,"journal":{"name":"Clinics in mother and child health","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"70977135","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Epidemiological evidence suggest that between 11% and 45% of women in Western countries of childbearing age have depleted iron stores [1] and this explains why most pregnant women are found with totally depleted iron stores. Limited iron stores may lead to iron deficiency that is the most leading cause of anemia in pregnancy [2]. Quality of midwifery performance is essential to strengthen mother and child health care. A successful maternal health care services must have a strong midwifery performance in providing ante natal, basic intra partum and post-partum care. Therefore, it was important to identify the socio-demographic factors influencing quality of midwifery performance. The study aimed to determine socio-demographic factors that influence quality of midwifery performance from the perspective of the midwives in governmental hospitals in Gaza Strip. Methods: A cross sectional study utilized representative census sampling of 212 midwives and nurses who work in maternity departments of governmental hospital in Gaza Strip. A questionnaire was developed with a response rate of 91.9%. The questionnaire was validated by experts, and reliability was obtained by Cronbach’s alpha coefficient. Data were analyzed using SPSS. Results: The results of the study revealed that presence of the highest socio-demographic factor that positively influences the quality of midwifery performance (high level of salary and availability of transportation). On other hand, the results indicated lowest socio-demographic factor that positively influences the quality of midwifery performance (marriage and advancement in age with more experience). In addition, it was found that there is a significant difference in the quality of midwifery performance in the governmental hospitals between different job titles (nurses, midwives, head nurses, supervisors) of the participants (p<0.05) in favor of midwives. Conclusion: There was a positive correlation between quality of midwifery performance and job titles in favor of midwives. Therefore, it is recommended that the managers should ensure adequate number of professional midwives at all times and shifts in maternity departments at the governmental hospitals in Gaza Strip.","PeriodicalId":92765,"journal":{"name":"Clinics in mother and child health","volume":"16 1","pages":"1-5"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"69014536","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

According to reports, uteroplacental thrombosis can lead to preeclampsia, intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR), placental abruption (PA) and even to fetal death. The Brazilian Ministry of Health recommends the application of heparin treatment-associated, or not, with ASA to pregnant women diagnosed with thrombophilia, based on its type. However, many studies have not been able to confirm the beneficial effects of heparin use on maternal and fetal health. Methods: The current research is a case-control study comprising pregnant women treated at the Obstetrics Service of Federal University of Juiz de Fora and at the Medical School of Barbacena, who used heparin in the current pregnancy due to previously diagnosed thrombophilia. Current pregnancy associated with heparin use was named ‘case’, whereas previous pregnancy without heparin use was named ‘control’. Thus, 47 cases (current pregnancy) and 32 controls were selected (1,4 cases: 1,0 control). Results: Association between heparin and miscarriage, intrauterine fetal death and preeclampsia were analyzed. Results showed that heparin acted as protective factor against miscarriage (OR=0.04; CI=0.01-0.14; p<0.0001), intrauterine fetal death (OR=0.01; CI=0.01-0.11; but heparin use did not reduce the frequency of preeclampsia cases (OR=0.35; CI=0.07-1.6; p=0.17). This study’s main objective was to describe the outcome of children born to HIV positive mothers, attended and followed up through the PMTCT program in the Borgou/Alibori Regional University Teaching Hospital (CHUD-Borgou/Alibori) from 2005 to 2015. Secondly, it aimed to identify factors associated with mother-to-child transmission of HIV at 18 months of age. Patients and Methods: This research work is a cross-sectional, retrospective, descriptive and analytical study of a cohort of children born to HIV-infected mothers and followed up in the pediatric ward of the Borgou/Alibori Regional University Teaching Hospital. It was conducted from May to December 2016 on the basis of data retrieval from medical records and registers. Results: Total of 1234 children was included in the study. Exclusive breastfeeding was the main source of nutrition for 91.6% of children. Antiretroviral prophylaxis was received by 82.7% of children at birth. 49.4% of the 1234 children (610/1234) were followed up till 18 months of age; 36.5% were lost to follow-up and 4.1% died. Overall rate of mother-to-child HIV transmission was 5.6% (34/610), of which 1.8% (9/509) was among children who received antiretroviral prophylaxis at birth. Two predictive factors for mother-to-child transmission of HIV were absence of clean and safe childbirth and lack of antiretroviral prophylaxis in children at birth. Conclusion: Improved antenatal care quality and efficient childbirth management with early mothers’ adherence to pediatric follow-up may help reduce vertical HIV transmission in this study environment.","PeriodicalId":92765,"journal":{"name":"Clinics in mother and child health","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"69965542","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
