The academic consequences for students with mental health conditions are significant, including poor class attendance, lower grade-point average, and course failure. Individuals struggling academically are less likely to persist and graduate with a degree. Understanding student experiences, including their satisfaction with mental health services, is critical to providing effective resources. Perceptions of stigma, campus climate, and satisfaction with services are among the most prevalent barriers to help-seeking, presenting significant challenges to efforts to support student mental health. This study used data from the Healthy Minds questionnaire to examine differences in perceptions of help-seeking barriers based on students’ history of mental health diagnoses and indicators of self-harm. Results indicated students with histories of mental health and/or risk of self-harm have fewer positive perceptions of stigma, campus climate, and satisfaction with services on campus. Suggestions for professionals providing supports to college students with mental health disabilities are provided.","PeriodicalId":92715,"journal":{"name":"Rehabilitation counselors and educators journal","volume":"29 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-06-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"84624391","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Results revealed that most students felt their professors were willing to provide accommodations. High levels of students perceived instructors' willingness to provide accommodations were associated with high students' willingness to disclose a disability. However, the students seemed to be unwilling to disclose their disability. Furthermore, rated past student experiences relative to requesting for accommodations was highly correlated with both perceived instructors' willingness to provide accommodations and students' willingness to disclose a disability. Implications for rehabilitation counselors working with students with disabilities and future research are discussed.</p>","PeriodicalId":92715,"journal":{"name":"Rehabilitation counselors and educators journal","volume":"8 2","pages":"8-19"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6474675/pdf/nihms-987462.pdf","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"37348475","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
