In situations of obesity, local and systemic inflammation may worsen the prognosis of oncological patients. Moreover, hypovitaminosis D increases the risk of breast tumors in women. In female dogs, low vitamin D levels have been found in cases of lymphoma, osteosarcoma and mast cell tumor. The present study aimed to make correlations between body fat composition and serum 25(OH)D concentration in female dogs with mammary tumors. Two experimental groups were formed: healthy female dogs (n = 12; control group) and female dogs with mammary tumors (n = 11). An analysis on body composition was performed using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) equipment. In the tumor group, multicentric nodules were most prevalent (63,6%), with diameters of up to 8.2 cm. The most frequent histopathological diagnosis was tubular carcinoma (45.5%), and 9.1% presented metastases in axillary lymph nodes. The mean 25(OH)D concentration in the female dogs with mammary tumors (37.6 ng mL-1) was lower than the level in the control group (65.4 ng mL-1). Multivariate statistical analysis showed that elderly female dogs with malignant mammary tumors and high body fat levels presented lower 25(OH)D concentrations than those of the control group. It was concluded that female dogs with higher body adiposity presented mammary tumors of higher aggressivity, and that the higher the fat percentage was in the female dogs with malignant mammary tumors, the lower their vitamin D concentration was.","PeriodicalId":9223,"journal":{"name":"Brazilian Journal of Veterinary Pathology","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-03-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"45181279","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Advanced age favors the development of mutations that often trigger cancer, which sometimes causes death. There are reports in the literature on neoplasms in lions in the liver, which are one of the main organs affected. A 20-year-old lion specimen was received for necropsy at the Federal University of Paraná, Curitiba, Brazil. Multiple cystic dilations were observed in the liver. Histologically, they were internally covered by a simple cuboidal epithelium, similar to that observed in the bile ducts, without cellular atypia. The adjacent liver parenchyma presented with mild disorganization of the hepatocyte cords. Biliary cystadenomas are benign growths formed by a thin opaque capsule filled with a slightly yellowish translucent fluid compressing the adjacent liver parenchyma, as highlighted in this case. The epithelium of the cysts was positive for anti-cytokeratin (CK) (EIA/A3E) and anti-CK7, confirming histogenesis in the bile ducts. This study reports a case of biliary cystadenoma in a Panthera leo specimen.","PeriodicalId":9223,"journal":{"name":"Brazilian Journal of Veterinary Pathology","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-03-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"46072720","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

As the skin has a variety of cells, overexposure to environmental factors, such as ultraviolet light, can affect this organ, resulting in malignancies, such as cutaneous SCC, hemangioma, and hemangiosarcoma. SCC arises from keratinocytes in the skin and is locally invasive with low metastatic rates, commonly affecting unpigmented skin in sites with high exposure to sunlight, such as ventral regions. SCC has a variable etiology that is not well understood. Therefore, literature review aimed to critically evaluate the risk factors involved in the SCC development.","PeriodicalId":9223,"journal":{"name":"Brazilian Journal of Veterinary Pathology","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-03-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"44448741","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The three animals were submitted for postmortem examination and diagnostic workup. The changes of one of the bison are presented here. Necropsy Findings: The carcass was in fair nutritional condition, with small amount of fat reserves, but still well fleshed, and in mild state of post-mortem decomposition. There was a small amount of clotted dark-red blood in the nostrils and anus. The heart presented extensive sub-endocardial hemorrhages in all four chambers. These lesions were most pronounced in both ventricles where they extended deep into the underlying myocardium (Figs. 1 and 2). The mucosa of the abomasum was diffusely and mildly congested, and the mucosa of the small and large intestine was diffusely and severely congested (Fig. 3). There was a moderate amount of red fluid in the lumen of the small intestine, cecum, and colon. Both lungs had a few, small, welldelineated, deep, firm, multifocal dark-red areas in all pulmonary lobes, but lung tissue samples floated when placed into formalin.","PeriodicalId":9223,"journal":{"name":"Brazilian Journal of Veterinary Pathology","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-03-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"42636145","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The bird had lived its entire life at the Winnie Carter Wildlife Center in Texas and had an unremarkable medical history, apart from bilateral congenital blindness. Necropsy Findings: Within the coelomic cavity, the serosal surface of the intestines was coated with a moderate amount of tan to green, mucoid, opaque, foul-smelling fluid (fibrinoheterophilic coelomitis) (Fig. 1). The large intestine was diffusely dilated and filled with dark red fluid and strands of yellow, friable material (fibrin). The mucosa of the small intestine, and most severely the colon, was diffusely roughened, thickened, dull, and covered by a thick yellow to green, opaque, friable diphtheritic membrane (Fig. 2). The distal colon was diffusely, markedly distended and focally contained a 50x7x5 cm, semi-firm accumulation of feces coated by a 4-5 mm diameter layer of tan, friable material (fibrin) located 21 cm from the opening of the cloaca. Gross evaluation of the eyes revealed bilateral aphakia.","PeriodicalId":9223,"journal":{"name":"Brazilian Journal of Veterinary Pathology","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-03-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"41969001","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Due to this fact, the expression of the intracellular adhesion molecules E and P-cadherin and correlation with overall survival were analyzed in 25 canine mammary gland tumors. E-cadherin expression reduction was correlated with histological type, high histological grade, and overall survival rate. P-cadherin staining was higher in malignant tumors, unrelated to other clinicopathological features of aggressiveness. The results of this study suggest a relationship between lower expression of E and P-cadherin and worse prognostic in canine mammary tumors, including shorter overall survival.","PeriodicalId":9223,"journal":{"name":"Brazilian Journal of Veterinary Pathology","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"42072589","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study aimed to describe the correlation between clinical, histopathological and histomorphometric features of STS in dogs. Medical records were reviewed to identify all dogs in which an STS was diagnosed between 2006-2017. Thirty cases were included, and tumour samples and medical records were recovered. Most of the dogs were mixed breed (40%) and 80% of the STS were located in the subcutaneous connective tissue. Histopathological classification showed that undifferentiated sarcoma (17%) and peripheral nerve sheath tumour (30%) were the most common STS. Grade I STS were obtained in 50% of cases (15/30), and grade II or III tumours compromised 43% (13/30) and 7% (2/30) respectively. The mitotic index ranged from zero to 26 (5.8 ± 7.5). Increased nucleus:cytoplasm ratio was moderately associated with higher tumour grade (p = 0.05; rS = 0.361) and mitotic index (p = 0.05; rS = 0.355), while the number of microvessels was positively correlated with degree of differentiation (p = 0.05; rS = 0.362) and nuclear pleomorphism (p = 0.036; rS = 0.384). Histomorphometry proved to be useful in the evaluation of STS, representing an additional tool correlated with well-established prognostic factors (histopathological grade, degree of differentiation, nuclear pleomorphism).","PeriodicalId":9223,"journal":{"name":"Brazilian Journal of Veterinary Pathology","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"41727210","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
