They are divided into 2 groups: vascular-derived neoplasms and vascular malformations. These 2 groups differ in several aspects, although their clinical presentation may be similar. Haemangiomas constitute the greatest group of benign vascular neoplasms, which are seen predominantly in children. Vascular malformations are morphogenetic disorders associated with the formation of dysplastic vessels. This article presents the current information on the classification, aetiology, diagnostic, symptomatology, methods, and outcomes of treatment of vascular-derived tumours localized in the upper extremity. It may be useful in diagnosing and managing these conditions.","PeriodicalId":91594,"journal":{"name":"Pomeranian journal of life sciences","volume":"69 1","pages":"23 - 29"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"46495643","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Although the most common types of injuries are abrasions and cuts to the skin, they sometimes include severe brain injuries. Most e-scooter accidents occur in the warm months. In winter, when there are unfavorable conditions for using this means of transport, e-scooter-related accidents are rare. Described in the text are 2 cases of severe cases of skull and brain injuries which required neurosurgical intervention. In both cases, the riders were under the influence of alcohol and did not use helmets, which had a measurable influence on the profile and the extent of injuries.","PeriodicalId":91594,"journal":{"name":"Pomeranian journal of life sciences","volume":"21 6","pages":"49 - 52"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"41267533","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Adalbert Kapandji in 1967. This method allows a reduction of the fracture using the K-wire as a “lever”, which elevates displaced bone fragments and places it on site. The objective of this article is the presentation of the Kapandji technique and the results of the treatment of distal radial fractures operated on at the authors’ institution. Materials and methods: A total of 187 patients, 151 women (81%) and 36 men (19%) aged on average 62 years were operated on using the Kapandji technique. The patients were followed up 6 months after surgery, according to standard protocol. Results: The mean wrist total arch of motion (dorsal + palmar flexion) was 93°, grip strength of 17.2 kG and the quickDASH score 21 points. All these variables reflect the overall good function of the affected hand. Meaningful secondary displacements were noted in only 5 patients (2.6%). In general, the results obtained by the patients were satisfactory. The results of our study show that using the Kapandji technique for the treatment of distal radial fractures resulted in satisfactory clinical outcomes and relatively rare complications.","PeriodicalId":91594,"journal":{"name":"Pomeranian journal of life sciences","volume":"69 1","pages":"1 - 5"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"46277888","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Emerging evidence indicates a role of endocannabinoids and their cognate receptors in synaptic modulation and plasticity at a wide range of synapses throughout the central nervous system. This study aimed to analyze the dynamics of changes in the concentrations of 2 endocannabinoids (anandamide – ANA, and 2-arachidonoylglycerol – 2-AG) and their impact on the carbohydrate-lipid metabolism in patients before kidney transplantation and 7 days, 1, 3, and 6 months after transplantation. Considering the pro-inflammatory action of the compound, an increase in the concentration of 2-AG causes deterioration in kidney function, which, in the case of tests performed after transplantation, is associated with a poor prognosis. In our results, the highest concentration was obtained in the group of patients before transplantation and the lowest after 6 months. In the group of patients after transplantation, ANA and 2-AG were significantly correlated with lipid metabolism parameters, adipocytokines, and inflammatory markers. As both endocannabinoids play a very important role in improving kidney function after transplantation, future studies are needed to examine the potential mechanisms for their action and clinical implication.","PeriodicalId":91594,"journal":{"name":"Pomeranian journal of life sciences","volume":"69 1","pages":"18 - 22"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"48096431","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Patients with a severe form of the disease present with more complications and end-organ dysfunction. This study is aimed at determining a relationship between 2 biochemical parameters associated with SCD (i.e. NO and Zn) and disease severity markers such as hematocrit, PF and VOC, with the objective of using NO and/or Zn to better understand the gravity of altered processes of SCD. Materials and methods: Ninety-eight adult participants of both sexes were recruited for the study and grouped accordingly as HbAA (control), HbSC and HbSS. Questionnaires provided information on PF, frequency of hospitalization, and clinic attendance. Hematocrit, serum NO and Zn were determined using standard techniques. Data were summarized and analyzed using one-way analysis of variance and regression analysis; p ≤ 0.05 was considered significant. Results: The rates of hospitalization, PF and clinic attendance were higher among HbSS than HbSC. HbAA had significantly higher levels of hematocrit, Zn and NO than HbSS and HbSC. Zinc and hematocrit for HbSS were significantly lower than HbSC but NO was not significantly different. Hematocrit, NO and Zn of patients in steady, VOC and post-VOC states of HbSC and HbSS were significantly different. A significant association was observed between biochemical parameters (NO, Zn) and hematocrit, VOC but not PF. Conclusion: The study suggests that Zn and NO are lower in SCD compared with control and can be affected by the severity of the disease. Therefore, periodic testing of NO and Zn may be beneficial in identifying patients with a higher risk of developing end organ damage.","PeriodicalId":91594,"journal":{"name":"Pomeranian journal of life sciences","volume":"69 1","pages":"6 - 12"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"48493816","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is not only a reason for patients seeking dental treatment, but it can also accompany performed procedures and often occurs after them. The management of acute pain consists of causative treatment and pharmacotherapy, with non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) being the drugs of choice in routine dental practice. These agents, however, may not be potent enough in cases with, pain of greater intensity. This paper focuses on tramadol, an atypical opioid, which is the most popular analgesic of this type in the world and can be considered a valuable option for the management of moderate to severe pain in dentistry and oral surgery. The characteristics of the agent were described, as well as its singular mechanism of action and biotransformation. Adverse effects that can occur during tramadol pharmacotherapy were discussed together with interactions significant in clinical practice. The available tramadol formulations were presented, with particular attention to the drug combinations examined in pain management in a dental setting.","PeriodicalId":91594,"journal":{"name":"Pomeranian journal of life sciences","volume":"69 1","pages":"30 - 38"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"42863295","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA), is widely used as a prosthodontic base for both partial and complete dentures, but it has many disadvantages such as low strength, insufficient resistance to fatigue, and porosity. Therefore, the topic of modern thermoplastic materials that could replace acrylic dentures will also be discussed. Materials and methods: In this article, we reviewed literature available on PubMed, Google Scholar, and NIH. The search was conducted in such electronic databases with the following keywords: “acrylic resin”, “nanoparticles”, “reinforcements of removable dentures”, “BioHPP in dentistry”, and “acetal resin in dentistry”. This study is focused on the effects of adding fibers, fillers, and nanofillers on the properties of PMMA. The paper draws on science-based reviews, original scientific papers, abstracts, and studies published over the past few decades. Results: The article explores various fillers and fibers that can be added to acrylic resin for dental prostheses. Adding carbon nanotubes, titanium diox ide (TiO2), silicon dioxide (SiO2), and zirconium dioxide (ZrO2) can improve the strength and other properties of the resin. Glass fibers, polyamide, aramid, polyethylene, and polypropylene fibers can increase fracture resistance, impact strength, and modulus. Combining ZrO2, zirconium nanotubes, and silane-treated ZrO2 nanoparticles is suggested to be the best solution for reinforcing dental prostheses. Conclusion: The properties of PMMA denture base material can be enhanced with the addition of fibers, fillers, silanized nanoparticles, and hybrid reinforcements to reduce damage and cracks. Due to the lack of an ideal material for dentures, the properties of PMMA can be improved with these modifications to make it significantly more convenient for patients to use.","PeriodicalId":91594,"journal":{"name":"Pomeranian journal of life sciences","volume":"69 1","pages":"39 - 45"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"49199880","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

They are mainly caused at traffic accidents, sexual assaults, harmful voluntary, and eccentric sexual activities, or medical measures. Spectrum of these injuries is wide – from minor wounds of anodermy or rectal mucosa, until rectal tears penetrated the peritoneal cavity. A case of an accidental, intraperitoneal injury of the rectum caused by a wooden broomstick is presented. The range of trauma was diagnosed based on computed tomography imaging of the abdomen and treatment consisted in the resection of the damaged fragment of the rectum followed by end colostomy. The post-operative course was uneventful. The authors emphasize the necessity of a careful evaluation of these injuries, because any delay in the treatment may result in serious, even fatal complications.","PeriodicalId":91594,"journal":{"name":"Pomeranian journal of life sciences","volume":"69 1","pages":"46 - 48"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"47073077","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

They result from the dysfunction of many systems, including the central nervous system. The most common cause of cobalamin deficiency in infants is inadequate supplementation of the vitamin with food. This mainly affects children who are exclusively breastfed by mothers who follow a diet with insufficient supplementation of vitamin B12, including an imbalanced vegetarian or vegan diet. Adequate vitamin B12 supplementation is essential for the proper growth and development of a child. However, attempts to compensate for severe vitamin B12 deficiency can paradoxically lead to severe adverse reactions to vitamin B12 treatment. In this paper, we present a case of a 10-month-old boy with global developmental delay, muscle hypotonia, and profound vitamin B12 deficiency with megaloblastic anemia. The boy developed pathological neurological signs after intramuscular injections of vitamin B12. The symptoms included muscle tremors of the upper extremities, head, tongue, and lips. A broad differential diagnosis including inborn errors of metabolism and other genetic disorders is discussed. We describe treatment that led to the complete resolution of symptoms related to the side effects of the B12 therapy. The patient’s psychomotor development during over 1 year of clinical follow-up is also analyzed.","PeriodicalId":91594,"journal":{"name":"Pomeranian journal of life sciences","volume":"69 1","pages":"53 - 57"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"48273614","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The aim of this study was to analyze the impact of hospital procedures on the onset of lactation, presenting the relationship between maintaining skin-to-skin contact and the time of attaching an infant to the mother’s breast, the course of first breastfeeding, feeding methods, suctioning an infant’s airway after birth and the type of delivery. The study was conducted using a diagnostic survey. The questionnaire contained 31 closed and semi-open questions concerning hospital procedures that could affect the lactation process. The respondents were primiparous and multiparous women in an early postpartum period who gave birth through the abdominal wall or vaginally. The study included 154 women aged 18–45 years who gave birth at the Department of Maternal-Fetal Medicine and Gynecology of Pomeranian Medical University in Szczecin, Hospital in Police (Poland). The collected material was analyzed statistically using the χ2 test. Based on the obtained results, the following conclusions were drawn: the onset of lactation was influenced by early skin-to-skin contact after birth with simultaneously attaching the baby to the breast, vaginal birth after the 37th week of pregnancy, and the duration of labor.","PeriodicalId":91594,"journal":{"name":"Pomeranian journal of life sciences","volume":"68 1","pages":"52 - 55"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"45367209","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
