Ghana is a net loser with regards to the smuggling of cocoa given relatively lower real producer price compared to its counterparts in production. Additionally, the close geographical location of key producing regions to the border lends support to such activities. This study investigates the supply response of cocoa in producing region such as Western North, Western South and Brong-Ahafo with proximity to Cote d’Ivoire and Volta which shares borders with Togo using data from 1981 to 2017. The study further estimates the volume of cocoa crop lost from these regions to the country’s neighbours from 2000 to 2017. In the findings, relative price differences significantly impact the volumes of reported crop for the country with 1% higher price abroad driving down production volumes in Western North, South and Brong-Ahafo by 0.53%, 0.48%, and 0.11% respectively. In 2013/14 crop year the country lost averagely 25,494 MT and 21,883 MT due to smuggling out of Western North and South, moderating to 1,559 and 1,358 in 2016/17. The Volta region consistently records outflow in each crop year except for 1999/2000, with peak losses in 2010/11 of 2,160 MT moderating to 1,197 in 2016/17. Net gains into the country from cocoa smuggling spanning from 1999/2000 to 2016/17 is averagely 23,534 MT and 15,336MT into Western North and South. However cocoa smuggling for both Ghana and its neighbours is on the descent in recent years as price disparities reduce. Intensifying the collaboration between Ghana and its close counterparts to minimize real crop price differences will effectively curtail the menace and the negative fallout of this to each country.","PeriodicalId":91562,"journal":{"name":"Journal of sustainable development","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-03-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"44193685","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Ongoing efforts to control neglected tropical diseases, including helminth and intestinal protozoan infections, must be maintained and strengthened with new approaches. The aim of this study was to test the adherence of communities to the Community-Led Total Sanitation (CLTS) approach. The study was conducted in three (3) departments in south- central Côte d'Ivoire. In practice, the process of implementing CLTS involves 5 major steps: i) Mapping of defecation areas, ii) Calculating of human fecal matter quantity and medical costs, iii) Walk of shame, iv) Analysis of contamination pathways, v) Community decision making and latrine construction. Overall, latrine coverage and usage rates have increased considerably in the intervention localities. In particular, out of the 26 localities where the CLTS was applied, 11 reached a latrine coverage rate higher than 80%, 6 of which reached a 100% coverage rate. The results of this work should be used to raise awareness in rural communities about the importance of building and using latrines. Furthermore, CLTS implemented on a large scale can contribute to achieving Goal 3 and 6 of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).","PeriodicalId":91562,"journal":{"name":"Journal of sustainable development","volume":"54 22","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-03-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"41267189","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

They are also interdependent. In the world of traditional irrigated agriculture in the US West, especially in arid or semi-arid areas, the Food-Water-Energy Nexus is undergoing severe challenges, including population growth, significant water scarcity, growing demands for environmental and species protection, downward pressure on commodity pricing from globalization, increasing demand and higher costs for energy, and the challenge of climate change. This wicked problem of food, water, water rights, energy, farmers, fish/ecology, and climate change is threatening not only the ability to restore and preserve the stream flows necessary to meet ecological needs, but also the legally mandated flows to senior water users and the economic viability of working rural agricultural landscapes. A case study of the Farmer’s Irrigation District in Oregon illustrates how a growing number of Western US irrigation district are modernizing their irrigation systems, labeled here as the Integrated Hydro-Irrigation-Restoration Model, by tapping the power of rivers to fuel new low carbon “small” hydropower facilities and pressurize water deliveries, while simultaneously taking measures to save water, promote less fertilizer usage, increase instream flows, and improve environmental outcomes. The new model is necessarily more responsive to the policy demands emanating from policymakers and environmentalists seeking redress for all parts of the Food-Water-Energy wicked problem, from carbon emissions to more environmentally and economically sustainable farming systems/communities.","PeriodicalId":91562,"journal":{"name":"Journal of sustainable development","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-03-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"47277093","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, the sustainable development of the third Pole ecotourism still needs to be explored on the basis of environmental carrying capacity assessment. Starting from the perspective of tourism environmental carrying capacity, this paper takes the third pillar as the research area, adopts the methods of desktop research, survey and interview, literature search, etc. Based on the construction of environmental carrying capacity model, carries out data analysis from four aspects: ecology, resource space, residents' psychology and social economy. The results showed that the other three carrying capacity levels were higher except for the social and economic carrying capacity. Therefore, it can be concluded that the third pole region is suitable for the development of ecotourism, but due to the low socio-economic carrying capacity, the development of ecotourism should be guided and regulated to some extent, and it is necessary to formulate a strategy suitable for the sustainable development of ecotourism in the third pole.","PeriodicalId":91562,"journal":{"name":"Journal of sustainable development","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"42899682","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

There is widespread research into ways of utilizing agricultural residues to achieve zero waste. Groundnut shells are biodegradable waste available in large quantities. This study investigated the use of groundnut shells for the biosorption of chromium (VI) ions from an aqueous solution. Groundnut shells were cleaned and crushed to make fractions of particle size in the range of 90-1000 µm. The point of zero charge (pHPZC) and the distribution of oxygenated acidic and basic surface functional groups were determined. In batch experiments, the effect of acid pre-treatment, initial metal concentration, biosorbent particle size, biosorbent dosage, and contact time on biosorption was investigated. The biomass was found to have a pHPZC value of 6 and was dominated by acidic groups. The best biosorption activity was observed at 20 mg/L initial metal concentration and a biosorbent dosage of 10%. The effect of contact time was dependent on the initial chromium (VI) concentration. At 20 mg/L initial chromium (VI) concentration, the biosorption process reached equilibrium within 60 minutes whilst at high (>80 mg) chromium (VI) concentration equilibrium was not reached, even after 240 minutes. The best biosorption activity was observed with acid-treated biomass of particle size 300 µm. The adsorption fitted best with the Langmuir isotherm model and the pseudo-second-order kinetic model (R2 > 0.9982). Groundnut shell biomass has the potential for the removal of chromium (VI) ions from aqueous solutions and possibly from chromium-polluted effluents on an industrial scale.","PeriodicalId":91562,"journal":{"name":"Journal of sustainable development","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-02-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"43908001","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Scientists are becoming increasingly aware of the carbon footprint associated with their research and recognise the need to work more efficiently with their resource use and laboratory operations. \u0000 \u0000University laboratories are spaces that allow for research to be carried out safely, however, they consume five times more energy per square meter than office buildings. Fume cupboards are amongst the most energy intensive equipment and thus are a dominant factor when working towards creating safer and greener laboratories. In this paper, we report on the gas, electricity, carbon and financial savings derived by upgrading 105 constant air volume fume cupboards to variable air volume systems. We also report on the frequency of fume cupboard use by research staff, postgraduate students, and their overall understanding of fume cupboard best practice operations. The results reflect that while savings were achieved, they were lower than predicted. A factor to this may be poor student and staff understanding of how fume cupboards work resulting in their incorrect usage, therefore hampering sustainable progression. This study highlights that a major gap exists between laboratory technical upgrades and researcher awareness of proper and safe equipment use and operation. To overcome this, we propose that in addition to health and safety training, mandatory laboratory sustainability operations training should be provided to all laboratory users.","PeriodicalId":91562,"journal":{"name":"Journal of sustainable development","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-02-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"49583308","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, the environmental impact of the transportation process is expected to increase compared to procuring the fuel domestically. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the environmental impact of biomass power generation using imported woody fuel. Human health, ecosystem, and global warming were evaluated using the life cycle assessment (LCA) method under four scenarios: three scenarios for importing woody fuel and one scenario for procuring woody fuel domestically. The results reveal that replacing heavy oil with liquefied natural gas (LNG) or ammonia as ship fuel at the time of importation could reduce the environmental impact to the same level or up to 86% compared to the case wherein wood fuel is procured domestically. Thus, using next-generation vessels to import wood fuel and generate biomass power effectively reduces environmental impact. Furthermore, the use of wood fuel—a renewable energy source whose generation can be adjusted—should be promoted toward achieving carbon neutrality.","PeriodicalId":91562,"journal":{"name":"Journal of sustainable development","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-02-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"46408934","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The Conditional Cash Transfer project was introduced in Tanzania aiming at poverty reduction among households. On that note, this study was conducted to assess the extent to which households’ involvement in the preparation of Monitoring and Evaluation plan influenced the performance of Tanzania Conditional Cash Transfer project. Descriptive cross-sectional and correlational research designs were used with the support of a pragmatic paradigm. By using Yamane’s (1967) formula, a sample size of 400 respondents was obtained from a target population of 61,240 households. Data was collected through administered questionnaires, key in-depth interviews and focus group discussions. The findings established a significant influence between households’ involvement in the preparation of Monitoring and Evaluation plan (t= 2.769, p-value = 0.006) on the performance of Tanzania Conditional Cash Transfer project. It was concluded that households’ involvement in the preparation of Monitoring and Evaluation plan played a significant role in the performance of Tanzania Conditional Cash Transfer project. Therefore, project implementers should review the Monitoring and Evaluation policy in order to incorporate households in the preparation of Monitoring and Evaluation plan for influencing the performance of the Tanzania Conditional Cash Transfer project.","PeriodicalId":91562,"journal":{"name":"Journal of sustainable development","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-02-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"46731425","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Bearing this in mind, this qualitative research was conducted to (1) to explore the extent to which the architects apply innovative strategies to fit the needs for the homes in the post-Pandemic era, and (2) to explore the architectural needs and wants of the residents in the post-Pandemic era. To fulfill these, semi-structured interviews were used to collect the data. A total of eight architects and ten residents living in apartment buildings were recruited by purposive sampling. The interviews were processed using thematic analysis. It was reported by majority of the architects that the most important innovative strategies to fit the needs for the homes in the post-Pandemic era are independent buildings, energy-related design changes, more human-centered design concepts, green open spaces, and advanced technology. As for residents, their architectural needs and wants in the post-Pandemic era were HVAC system, green open spaces, inappropriate designs, and lack of self-sufficient strategies. Further discussion on the findings have been reported in this research.","PeriodicalId":91562,"journal":{"name":"Journal of sustainable development","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"43638730","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
