Under these circumstances, public health nurses (PHNs) who provide continued support to children and their families play important roles in dealing with child abuse. Therefore, it is necessary to consider the support that PHNs require to perform their duties. The purpose of this study was to clarify the training needs and issues recognized by PHNs involved in prevention of child abuse. Methods: A questionnaire survey was administered to PHNs involved in prevention of child abuse in municipalities and public health centers in Japan. Descriptions regarding training needs and issues were analyzed qualitatively. Results: The contents of training that PHNs required were diverse. Among them, the most common training need was “ways to approach and support parents”, followed by “case study” and “role and response as a PHN”. Training needs differed according to the duration of experience as a PHN. The issues recognized by PHNs were “improvement of necessary system for support”, “development system to support supporters”, “enhancement of human resources” and “advancement of cooperation with relevant organizations”. Conclusion: The training needs of PHNs involved in prevention of child abuse varied, but there were characteristics according to the duration of experience as a PHN. It is important to reflect these needs in training contents in order to implement effective training for PHNs. The issues recognized by PHNs cannot be solved immediately through personal efforts alone; therefore, it is necessary for entire organizations to approach the issues.","PeriodicalId":91514,"journal":{"name":"International journal of nursing & clinical practices","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"45420769","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Nursing students appear to be at risk for low self-esteem, and their training may negatively impact that selfesteem. The existing research, with its controversies, methodological issues, and gaps, has failed to fully portray or explain this phenomenon. Mruk’s two-dimensional model of self-esteem offers an operative theoretical framework based on self-competence and self-liking. The model describes the nature of ‘selfesteem moments’ in which self-esteem changes. The aim of this study is to answer the question: “How does undergraduate nursing education influence students’ self-esteem, specifically regarding the development of their clinical competence?” Methods: A longitudinal design is needed to describe changes during undergraduate nursing education. A mixed methods study is required to measure and explain those changes, with a convergent, multiphase design. A nursing student cohort is created by accidental sampling in four Belgian high schools and followed for three years. Quantitative data including sociodemographic data, self-esteem (as measured by the Rosenberg scale and the Tafarodi & Swann scale), self-efficacy, and state anxiety (Spielberger scale) are collected each year. These data will be used to describe changes in self-esteem level and profile during nursing education. Multivariate analysis is used to identify correlated factors. Qualitative data are collected each year via semi-structured interviews with a cohort created by purposive sampling; content analysis is performed on that data(hermeneutic phenomenology) to identify themes using repetitions, similarities and differences, indigenous categories, and theory-related material. The quantitative and qualitative data are then combined into a meta-matrix. Discussion: The challenges encountered during study designing involved following the cohort while minimizing missing data, validating the French translation of a self-esteem scale using nursing students, and dealing with a large volume of data, especially when assembling it into a meta-matrix. The aim of the study is to help educational institutions tackle the self-esteem issue. Future studies might also compare nursing students to other students, explore the situation of dropouts, and evaluate self-esteem-related pedagogical devices. Trial Registration: This non-interventional study was approved by the ethics committee (Comited’ Ethique Hospitalo-Facultaire Universitaire de Liege (707)) and assigned reference no. 2017/233.","PeriodicalId":91514,"journal":{"name":"International journal of nursing & clinical practices","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-06-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"42951975","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Neonates staying in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit frequently receive painful procedures many times a day. Heel lance is one of the most frequently performed painful procedures for blood sampling, but the pain of heel lance has been not sufficiently managed for a long time. Due to the lack of the analgesic effect and safety of pharmacological intervention, the pain relief for neonatal heel lance is being searched for in diverse combinations of non-pharmacological interventions. To develop pain relief for the heel lance, the Premature Infant Pain Profile (PIPP) comprised of a mixture of physiological and behavioral indices is frequently used as a pain evaluation index, but several problems of PIPP have been pointed out with regard to neonatal pain evaluation, and pain evaluation using PIPP alone interferes with the development of pain relief for neonatal heel lance. Recently, evoked potentials (EP) after heel lance have been attracting attention as an index of evaluating pain objectively and quantitatively for neonates unable to express pain with words. EP detects more sharply pain stimulation and may enable continuous evaluation of neonatal pain along with growth and development. The development of EP-based pain evaluation promotes the development of pain relief for neonatal heel lance.","PeriodicalId":91514,"journal":{"name":"International journal of nursing & clinical practices","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-05-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"43420032","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The design was a forward-looking quantitative questionnairebased study. Data collection was conducted at hospitals and seminars in Japan. Participants were nurses (n = 186; males: 2.7%; females: 97.3%) and nursing students [n = 552; males: 2.0% (38.4 ± 10.3 years); females: 98.0% (22.9 ± 4.9 years)]. Nursing student data from a study with the same questionnaire were obtained retrospectively. Data were gathered using the 15-item Shimizu Scale, which measures attributes and four subconcepts (bewilderment, anxiety, cognitive bias, and communication difficulty). Higher scores indicate more negative cognitions or attitudes (maximum score: 28). Data were descriptively analyzed using t-tests and secondary factor analysis of confirmatory factors. The responses of nurses were compared with the previously collected responses of nursing students who differed from nurses in their experience and knowledge. Nurses’ total scores (mean: 3.94) were significantly lower than the nursing students’ scores (mean: 4.4), indicating that nurses had a more positive view of communication with older people than nursing students. Moreover, a significant difference in the anxiety scores was observed between nurses with","PeriodicalId":91514,"journal":{"name":"International journal of nursing & clinical practices","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-04-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"48794679","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

At the federal level, the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms section 15(1) identifies the right of Canadians to be treated equally and explicitly identifies disability as a prohibited ground of discrimination with a right to accommodation. Although, each province and territory have their own respective Human Rights Code which detail protected areas, each code explicitly includes disability as a prohibited ground of discrimination and offers a detailed definition of what constitutes a disability [10-12]. Further, the duty to accommodate included in each act details the legal obligation to remove barriers and promote equitable participation. However, the duty to accommodate is not an absolute. For example, the Ontario Human Rights Code describes undue hardship as a justification to deny accommodation for reasons such as health concerns, safety concerns and financial cost.","PeriodicalId":91514,"journal":{"name":"International journal of nursing & clinical practices","volume":"7 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-03-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"41824040","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Thus, exposure of medical staff and family members to hazardous drugs is a serious concern. Methods: We enrolled 31 female Japanese patients (age: 54.7 ± 10.5) who had been diagnosed with breast cancer more than one month previously, had received one cycle of chemotherapy (treatment protocols including cyclophosphamide (CPA)), and had Performance Status of 0 or 1 (irrespective of age). The patients were asked to keep saliva for 3 days after outpatient chemotherapy. The saliva samples were mailed and analysed for CPA at Shionogi Analysis Centre Co., Ltd., Japan. Blood data were obtained from medical records. Ethical approval for this study was obtained from Ishikawa Nursing University (No. 561). Results: The patients received CPA ranging from 600 to 1200 mg/person (14.5 ± 4.5 mg/Kg). CPA in saliva was 13.6-79.0 (33.1 ± 13.2) mg/mL immediately after the chemotherapy and exponentially reduced with the passage of time (half-life of 6.62 ± 1.24 h). We estimated the CPA to be about 15-87% after dinner on the day of chemotherapy, 2.0-18.9% after breakfast and 0.08-5.09% after dinner on the 2nd day, and 0.02-0.6% after breakfast and 0.002-0.1% after dinner on the 3rd day. A significant positive correlation was observed between AST and half-life (γ = 0.36, P < 0.05). Conclusion: These findings show that it took one and a half days after outpatient chemotherapy to minimize the exposure risk to patients and family members. Maximum care is needed in contact with family members (cooking, eating, feeding children and washing toothbrushes).At the same time, it is necessary to minimize mental and physical stress to protect liver function.","PeriodicalId":91514,"journal":{"name":"International journal of nursing & clinical practices","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-02-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"47838594","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Design: Systematic reviews. Data Source: We searched for evidence regarding nurses’ attitude, perceptions, feelings, thoughts, or behaviors toward patient advocacy in three databases: CINHAL, MEDLINE, and OVID. Review Methods: The inclusion criteria were studies on nurses’ attitude, perception, feelings, thoughts, and behaviors toward patient advocacy published in academic journals in English language. Qualitative, quantitative, or mixed-method research studies were included. The Critical Appraisal Skills Program (CASP) as a quality assessment tool was used as a framework to review the quality of the full-text articles. Each article was awarded a value score out of 20. Results: A total of 21 studies were eligible, of the 998 studies retrieved from selected databases. The review resulted in two findings: (1) nurses consistently have positive attitude toward patient advocacy, and (2) the patient advocacy process includes four elements: (1) the client situation, (2) the nurse, (3) advocacy interventions, and (4) the advocacy consequences. Conclusion: Preparing professional nurses for the advocacy role is essential part of quality nursing care. Impact: Patient advocacy is a complex concept and there has been inconsistencies on the use of this concept in the literature. Patient advocacy should be defined as a process with four elements: the patient situation, the nurse, and advocacy action, and the advocacy consequences.
