In contrast to developed countries, where the use of alcohol-based solutions (ABS) is routine, the usual practice in Iran is hand scrubbing using Povidone Iodine Solution (PVI). Most researchers have concluded that ABS might be superior to PVI, but others have found no differences. In this study the disinfection efficacy of ABS was compared to PVI. Methods: Thirty-one volunteers including surgeons and operating room nurses (OR-nurses) participated in this cross over design study. For one week they used ABS and the next week they used PVI for pre-surgical hand disinfection. Samples were obtained from the hands of all participants before, immediately after and two hours after hand washing. The bacterial contamination rate was evaluated by a microbiologist. Results: Our results demonstrated that ABS led to significantly lower mean Colony Forming Units (CFU) immediately after hand disinfection, but no significant differences were found between the two groups after two hours. Also, alcohol-based solution revealed a significantly higher logarithmic reduction factor (RF) of skin flora as an instantaneous effect. Both solutions were effective against Staphylococcus aureus, but the minimum reduction rate was in eliminating the Bacillus group. Conclusions: In conclusion, ABS can be promoted as the best choice for surgical hand disinfection solution amongst emergency situations, in that it has a time saving character and better instantaneous effect on bacterial skin flora reduction.","PeriodicalId":91413,"journal":{"name":"The Canadian journal of critical care nursing","volume":"101 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-10-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"84109310","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Canada (Attorney General) case, declaring section 241(b) and section 14 of the Criminal Code invalid, and granting a one-year suspension on that declaration to enable the Parliament of Canada to respond. In June 2016, Bill C-14: An Act to Amend the Criminal Code and Make Related Amendments to Other Acts (Medical Assistance in Dying) was passed after much debate in the House of Commons and Senate of Canada. Brief summaries of the Carter v. Canada case and the new federal law are provided and questions regarding medical assistance in dying are explored. The implications of the case and the new law for critical care nurses are also examined, including the need for nurses to attend to legislative changes, the need for education about the roles of nurses in medical assistance in dying, particularly what can be learned from other jurisdictions, and the importance of understanding the concept of conscientious objection.</p>","PeriodicalId":91413,"journal":{"name":"The Canadian journal of critical care nursing","volume":"27 3","pages":"18-23"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"35847087","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Objectives: The present study was conducted to determine fatigue and associated factors in patients with heart failure. Methods: The present descriptive-analytical study was conducted on patients with CHF admitted to Imam Sajjad hospital of Ramsar in 2014. Data collection tools included: 1) multidimensional assessment of fatigue (MAF) scale, 2) the Pittsburgh sleep quality index (PSQI), 3) the hospital anxiety and depression scale (HADS), and 4) demographic characteristics form and the hemoglobin and ejection fraction (EF) records. Data collection was done through interviews and observations. Results: The study was conducted on 100 CHF patients with a mean age of 68.8 ± 11.7 years. Overall, 69% of the patients reported fatigue, and 60.6% claimed severe fatigue. Fatigue was found to be significantly related to sleep disorders and anxiety, but not to depression and hemoglobin. Fatigue was predominantly affected by anxiety. Conclusions: The results of the present study showed that a high percentage of patients with CHF experience fatigue .Fatigue is a subjective phenomenon that is often less attended to and needs to be clinically assessed; to promote health care in these patients, it is required to consider factors such as mood disorders (anxiety and depression) and sleep disorders.","PeriodicalId":91413,"journal":{"name":"The Canadian journal of critical care nursing","volume":"9 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-08-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"84727834","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, it is possible to take blood from a peripheral venous catheter to obtain accurate laboratory test results and alleviate the suering of patients. Objectives: The aim of this study was to compare hematology, chemistry, and blood gas values sampled from venipuncture and continuous infusion intravenous catheter. Methods: In this cross-sectional comparative study, a convenient sample of 61 adult patients was drawn according to the inclusion and exclusion criteria, from the intensive care unit. Two blood samples, one from a continuous infusion catheter, which was already in place and one from venipuncture at the other extremity, were obtained from each patient. The two sets of samples were compared in terms of hematology, biochemistry and blood gas values by using the paired-samples t-test. Results: The two sets of samples diered significantly in terms of blood sugar values. Other dierences between the two sets were not statistically significant. Conclusions: Except for blood sugar, blood sampling from a continuous 24-hour infusion catheter produces reliable hematol- ogy, biochemistry and blood gas results as that of venipuncture blood sampling method. Moreover, compared with the routine venipuncture method, sampling from a continuous infusion catheter is simpler, easier and safer.","PeriodicalId":91413,"journal":{"name":"The Canadian journal of critical care nursing","volume":"49 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-08-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"84957758","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Samples of this study included 110 patients transferred from the intensive care unit to the general ward. Spielberger's questionnaire was used to collect data. To analyze the data, the SPSS version 16 software was used. Results: After entering variables in the multivariate logistic regression model, it was found, that there was only a significant rela- tionship between gender and anxiety. Statistical data showed that 63.6% of patients had moderate anxiety. Conclusions: According to the study, the subjects had high levels of anxiety, thus providing a platform for learning how to deal with anxiety seems to be required for these patients. The study also found that being female is directly related to the level of anxiety in these patients. Therefore, more attention to females during transfer from the intensive care to the general ward is important.","PeriodicalId":91413,"journal":{"name":"The Canadian journal of critical care nursing","volume":"15 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-08-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"89056028","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
