However, in modeling agro-ecological systems, there are some practical problems associated with tightly linked components. The objective of this paper is to present practical solutions to these problems. First, we describe a model of a dairy farm with component models such as livestock, crops, and manure storage. Each component partitions its nutrient inflows into various outflows. The partitioning is driven by the inflows and some process parameters, but is not affected by the state of the component. Thus, linking livestock and crops results in a circular dependency. This dependency is addressed by the introduction of a specialized component. Second, we consider a dynamic model of crop growth, soil water and soil nitrogen. Here, we show that dependencies between component models that arise when we model competition for light, water and nutrients can be reduced by introducing specialized components. In conclusion, the practical problems that have cropped up in our work were successfully addressed and re-use of our component models has become more intuitive.
Summer Computer Simulation Conference : (SCSC 2014) : 2014 Summer Simulation Multi-Conference : Monterey, California, USA, 6-10 July 2014. This paper presents a new fault location procedure based upon voltage-only measurements at a few busses in the system. The new procedure utilizes system impedance matrices and a least-squared error minimization technique to estimate the fault location. The estimation algorithm has been successfully tested with five actual faults to verify its validity. Three-phase and phase-to-ground faults are included in the analysis.
Summer Computer Simulation Conference : (SCSC 2014) : 2014 Summer Simulation Multi-Conference : Monterey, California, USA, 6-10 July 2014. Complex events are composed of interrelated events, and they can be defined at any level of spatio-temporal abstraction (equal to or above the lowest level of abstraction given by the model). Minimal types of complex events define sets, which are equated with particular emergent behaviours and can be detected in simulation. \u0000 \u0000Since complex events are derived from the agent-based model itself, they provide significant benefits when compared with traditional state-aggregation methods. First, they provide a method of specifying emergent behaviour, so that such behaviour can be monitored. Second, they provide a mechanism that retains the underlying structure of that behaviour. This latter property supports analysis of the mechanisms at lower levels that give rise to emergent behaviours, and identification of patterns between levels. In other words, multi-agent simulations become less 'opaque' [1].
Summer Computer Simulation Conference : (SCSC 2014) : 2014 Summer Simulation Multi-Conference : Monterey, California, USA, 6-10 July 2014. We have previously shown that the CC chemokine, CCL-1 and its receptor CCR8 are expressed and causes migration of cancer cells: skin, melanoma, MDMA (breast cancer) and Kaposi's sarcoma spindle cells. In the present study we examined the role of CCL-1 and its receptor CCR8 in the regulation of gene expression by microarray analysis and targeted siRNA inhibition in human cervical carcinoma (HeLa) cells. \u0000 \u0000We have found that HeLa cells constitutively express CCR8 and this expression of CCR8 is stimulated by CCL-1. Inorder to understand the underlying mechanisms we looked at gene expression during CCL1 and CCR8 mediated interactions. Affymetrix human microarray data analysis revealed that CCL-1 regulates genes that are involved in angiogenesis, apoptosis, oxidative stress and chemotaxis. CC chemokine CCL-2 (MCP-1) a potent regulator of monocyte/macrophage chemotaxis and invasion in various disease states is induced in response to CCL1. This stimulation of CCL-2 by CCL-1 was further validated by RT-PCR analysis. In corollary, targeted CCR8 siRNA inhibition down regulated CCL-2 expression further substantiating our findings. It is known that CCL2 protects human neuronal cells from tat-induced apoptosis and CCL1 is anti-apoptotic for thymic and leukemia cells. In the present study genes involved in oxidative stress are inhibited and those involved in protection against apoptosis are upregulated suggesting a common pathway for the two CC chemokines. Close examination of the role of CCL-1/CCR8 pathway in the regulation of CCL-2 and other angiogenic and/or apoptotic factors will provide important insights into vascular cell pathologies.
Summer Computer Simulation Conference : (SCSC 2014) : 2014 Summer Simulation Multi-Conference : Monterey, California, USA, 6-10 July 2014. A case study is developed to apply this method to select a scenario to implement the maintenance program in a constant work in process (CONWIP) system. The maintenance activities directly or indirectly affect on production system performance such as response time, production costs and etc. so, we used the fuzzy simulation to determine the maintenance affects on the system performance. As candidate for such a traffic simulator, the Virtual Inter-modal Transportation System (VITS) approach to traffic simulation is summarized, followed by a discussion of its adaptability to an urban city area instead of an US state like Mississippi or Alabama. With respect on its disadvantages, the VITS model is re-implemented in Java with the assumption of constant vehicles' speeds in-between the traffic nodes no longer necessary. The consequences of this change are analyzed by some scenario experiments.
Summer Computer Simulation Conference : (SCSC 2014) : 2014 Summer Simulation Multi-Conference : Monterey, California, USA, 6-10 July 2014. Using state-of-the-art video game production tools and runtime engines as an enabling technology, simulation learning combines interactive virtual worlds, based on validated engineering models, with engaging storylines and scenarios that invoke the emotional response---and the corresponding human stress level---that first responders would encounter during a real-world emergency. However, these models usually introduce hundreds to thousands of state variables and are computationally intensive. Moreover, including relative motion in the physics-based dynamic modeling of electromechanical systems is not a trivial task. In this paper, relative motion is incorporated in highly accurate full-order models that are based on geometrical and material data. Automated linear and nonlinear order-reduction techniques are introduced to mathematically extract the essential system dynamics in the desired bandwidth, thus preserving both accuracy and computational efficiency. The resulting reduced-order systems are verified using finite element-based models and magnetic equivalent circuits in both time and frequency domains.
Summer Computer Simulation Conference : (SCSC 2014) : 2014 Summer Simulation Multi-Conference : Monterey, California, USA, 6-10 July 2014.
