In Indonesia, despite a high percentages of women (96%) who breastfeed their children, only 42% of infants aged under 6 months are exclusively breastfed. It is important to understand the factors that influence exclusive breastfeeding so that intervention can be directed precisely.Method: We conducted a cross-sectional study of mother who had 7 to 12 months old infants in Puskesmas Curug, Indonesia (2012). Data were collected by face-to-face interviews using a structured questionnaire. Chisquare was used to find risk factors associated with exclusive breastfeeding.Results: Of 60 mothers, 51.2% did exclusive breastfeeding. Factors known to influence exclusive breastfeeding were early breastfeeding initiation (p=0.002), health counselling (p<0.001) and knowledge (p=0.004). Mother’s education and occupation were not associated with exclusive breastfeeding.Conclusion: Opportunities exist for increasing health counselling in primary healthcare in Indonesia to motivate mothers to do exclusive breastfeeding.","PeriodicalId":91373,"journal":{"name":"Pediatrics & therapeutics : current research","volume":" ","pages":"1-4"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-11-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.4172/2161-0665.1000337","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"49200312","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Malnutrition in Ethiopia, in the form of stunting is higher than other forms of malnutrition among under five children. Objective: To assess magnitude of stunting and its determinants among children aged 06-59 Months in Semen Bench Woreda, Genja District, South West Ethiopia. Methods: A Community based cross-sectional study was conducted from March 7 to May 28, 2017 in Genja district, southwest Ethiopia. Data were collected using structured questionnaires and measuring height of children. Bivariate and multivariate regression analyses were used using SPSS version 21 software to see the relevant associations. Descriptive statistics, binary and multivariable logistic regressions were done to identify factors associated with. P<0.05 were used to declare statistical significance. Anthropometric data were also converted into indices of nutritional status using Emergency Nutrition Assessment (ENA) for SMART. Results: A total of 309 households were included in the study giving the response rate 100%. The prevalence of stunting among children 6-59 month in Genja district was 23%. From its 3.6% of them were severely stunted whereas 19.4% was moderately stunted. In multivariate analysis income and history of diarrhea were independent predictors of stunting with p- value <0.05. Children who had no history of diarrhea in the past had 0.6 lower odds of stunting than their counterpart (AOR=0.63, (CI; 1.03, 3.44)) and also children’s whose family had income between 500-1000 had 0.8 lower odds off stunting than their counterpart (AOR=0.84, (CI; 0.2, 0.92)). Conclusion and recommendation: Prevalence of stunting among children aged 6-59 months was to some extent high in contrast to other studies and government plan. Thus, it is indispensable to strengthen health promotion actions and social, educational and income-generating investments for preventing and fighting these nutritional ailments, which are still significantly present in this study area.","PeriodicalId":91373,"journal":{"name":"Pediatrics & therapeutics : current research","volume":" ","pages":"1-7"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-08-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"46873946","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Objective: The purpose of this study is to determine HIV and Hepatitis B and C virus co-infection frequency among HIV infected children's cohort at Cotonou National Teaching Hospital and identify predicting factors of this coinfection. Materials and methods: Authors performed a descriptive, cross-sectionnal and analytic study covering the periood of 1st of May to 31st of August at the Cotonou National Teaching Hospital which is a tertiary hospital dedicated to HIV infected children follow up and management. Recruitment was exhaustive and sociodemographic, clinical and biological data (Ag HBs, ac HBc) were registered. Results: 31 cases of co-infection were registered among 234 HIV infected children (13.2%). HIV/VHB coinfection was encountered in 12.8% of cases and HIV/VHC co-infection in 0.4%. Through univariate analysis history of blood transfusion was an associated factor and through multivariate analysis, predicting factors of that co-infection were length of HAART (p=0.0375), children's hepatitis B immunization status (p=0.0461) and history of blood transfusion (p=0.0162). Conclusion: This work will contributes to reinforce regular screening of hepatitis B and C co-infection among HIV infected children before HAART initiation and also serve as tool for advocacy for hepatitis B immunization at birth in our country.","PeriodicalId":91373,"journal":{"name":"Pediatrics & therapeutics : current research","volume":"2017 1","pages":"1-7"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-08-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"42513592","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, it is essential to the appropriate management and treatment in children. Objective: To assess pain levels in pediatric patients admitted to an emergency department using standardized pain assessment tools. Methods: Descriptive, cross-sectional study of 1840 children hospitalized in the Emergency and Poison Control Department of the Vietnam National Children’s Hospital in Hanoi, Vietnam from 12/2014 to 3/2015. On admission and again at 6 hours, nurses or physicians assessed pain levels using the Wong-Baker Faces scale for children 3 years of age. Time of first analgesic administration (paracetamol or opioids) and basic demographic data were prospectively recorded on standard datasheets. Results: We enrolled 1840 children (66% male, 34% female) during the 4 months study period. Of this total, 1221 (66.7%) were 1 months to 3 years in age. On admission, no pain was noted in 356 (19.3%), mild pain in 746 (40.5%), moderate pain in 681(37%), and severe pain in 42 (2.3%). On admission, the mean pain score was (2.92 ± 1.94 on admission. After 6 hours, 820 (44.6%) children were pain-free and 755 (41%) had mild pain, with mean pain scores of 1.59 ± 1.79. Analgesics were not administered to children with no pain; analgesics were administered to 3.8% and 26% of patients with moderate or severe pain, respectively. There was no difference in the pain level by age groups or gender. Only 2.3% patients received analgesics, all of these had moderate or severe pain scores. Conclusions: Pain scales are useful in stratifying pain in children so that analgesics can be appropriately administered to those with the most acute pain. Pain scores can guide emergency physicians to treat nonverbal patients most in need of analgesics.","PeriodicalId":91373,"journal":{"name":"Pediatrics & therapeutics : current research","volume":" ","pages":"1-3"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-08-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"43501412","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
