Neonatal mortality rate in Jordan is still high. This is the first study from Jordan that aims to assess VLBWI mortality rate and the factors contributed to it and to report on the short outcomes and morbidities of those newborns in comparison to other countries to identify potential areas of improvement. \u0000Methods: A prospective study of all newborns with birth weight 500-1500 g, admitted to our level three neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) at Jordan university hospital over 14 months period. The results were compared to reports from other countries. \u0000Results: The study included 71 neonates admitted to our neonatal intensive care weighing from 500-1500 g during the study period. Most of them (88.7%) were inborn infants. Gestational ages mean ± SD was 28.6 ± 2.3 week. Birth weights mean ± SD was 1086.7 ± 262 g. Mortality rate was 35.2%. Short outcomes of survivors are for CLD 4.2%, sever ROP 3.8%, proven NEC 2.8%, PVL 1.9% and sever IVH rate was 10.6%. \u0000Conclusions: Mortality rate in our cohort is high. Multiple factors are involved. The care of very low birth infants in Jordan needs a lot of efforts to decrease mortality and improve morbidities. This is a prospective single center study. A multicenter study is needed that involves all health sectors in Jordan.

Methods: A retrospective analysis was performed including variables such as demographics, clinical signs, symptoms and laboratory predictors. The patient population consisted of all children between the ages of 0 and 18 years who were treated for acute appendicitis between January 2014-December 2014. Patients with perforated appendicitis were identified using coding data. Results: During the 1-year period, 74 patients were treated for appendicitis. Using correlation and logistic regression, nineteen variables were assessed for any relationship to a ruptured appendix in these patients. No substantial correlations were detected. Conclusions: There have been reports of racial and socioeconomic disparities with regards to perforated appendicitis in children. However, there is not enough evidence in the literature that supports the prediction of perforated appendix based on clinical and laboratory values. This study, at Saint Anthony Hospital, found no correlation between socioeconomic status, clinical presentation, laboratory values and ruptured appendix.

Method: “Palmar grasp reflex” and “grasping reflex” were searched in scientific journals published between 2000 and 2016. Two groups were identified in newborns up to six months: (1) Palmar grasp reflex was studied as part of instruments of neuropsychomotor evaluation. (2) Palmar grasp reflex was taken as a dependent or independent variable. Results: Eighteen articles were selected. Four were excluded because of inappropriate methods. Concerning the fourteen remaining, teen were included in group 1 (A) and four in group 2 (B). Conclusions: Palmar grasp reflex may be part of different instruments used to evaluate clinical and developmental studies. It may be easily detected without a necessary environment. Its intensity may be used as an index for acquisition of motor skills and lateral differences may be associated with hand preference in adults.

The Broselow tape and the Advanced Pediatric Life Support (APLS) formula are currently being used to predict the actual weight, however, studies have shown that when used on patients of different ethnicity and varying body mass index (BMI), it over/underestimates the weight. Studies done among Chinese and Indian children as well as elderly patients made use of a formula using Mid Upper Arm Circumference (MUAC): (MUAC-10) × 3 to predict weight. As of this time, there is no published literature on methods for approximating weight among Filipino children. Objectives: This study aims to determine which of the methods can be used among Filipino children aged 1 to12 years old to predict the weight. Methodology: Patients seen at University of Santo Tomas Outpatient Department were weighed using a mechanical beam scale, length determined using Broselow Tape and the MUAC using a standard tape measure and recorded. Results: Three hundred sixty participants were included and grouped according to sex, age and BMI. The results showed that the three methods had a positive correlation and were comparable to the actual weight. Of the three methods tested, MUAC had the strongest independent relationship, and seen to be more accurate and precise compared to Broselow and APLS formula. Conclusions: Any of previously mentioned methods may be used among Filipino children age 1 to 12 years old, with the MUAC formula being the most accurate and precise in estimating weight. Another advantage of using the MUAC formula is its reproducibility, since the material used for measurement is readily available and that it is easy to do.

Children presenting with febrile illnesses may have few of the classical diagnostic criteria, yet develop clinical, laboratory and echocardiographic findings compatible with the condition. Early recognition and prompt treatment of KD is essential for better outcomes. This is particularly the case for infants who are at a greater risk of developing complications such as coronary artery aneurysms. This may be partly attributed to late diagnosis or initiation of therapy. This report discusses the case of a febrile infant with atypical Kawasaki disease presenting with aseptic meningitis and coronary artery aneurysm. The case highlights the importance of considering atypical Kawasaki disease in any infant with prolonged fever (more than seven days), following exclusion of infectious causes and in the absence of classical diagnostic criteria.

Abera, Misra Abdulahi, Tolassa Wakayo
Background: Fathers have an important but often neglected role in the promotion of healthy breastfeeding practices. Evidences show that mothers who have a supportive and encouraging partner are more likely to plan to breastfeed and to breastfeed for a longer duration. Despite this benefit, breastfeeding promotion efforts have largely targeted mothers, and to a lesser extent, grandmothers, but fathers have often been often overlooked. Objective: To assess the involvement of fathers in breastfeeding practices and associated factors among households having less than six months children in Misha woreda, Southern Ethiopia. Method: A community based cross-sectional study involving both quantitative and qualitative approaches was conducted from March 1-30/ 2016. Bivariate and multivariable logistic regression analyses were employed to identify factors associated with fathers’ involvement in breastfeeding practices. Strength of association was measured using adjusted odds ratio with 95% CI. Statistical significance was declared at p<0.05. Results: Fathers’ involvement in breastfeeding practices was 72.4%. Factors that were significantly associated with fathers involvement in breast feeding practices include educational status of fathers [AOR=4.113, 95%CI=(2.010, 8.414)], monogamy matrimonial status [AOR=8.473, 95%CI=(2.982, 24.079)], visiting health facility [AOR=5.864, 95% CI=(2.703, 12.644)], having wives with good perception about fathers involvement [AOR=5.616, 95% CI=(3.124, 10.099)] and having media information source at home [AOR=1.771, 95% CI=(1.036, 3.027)]. Conclusions: Fathers’ involvement in breastfeeding practices was good in Misha woreda. Predictors of fathers’ involvement in breastfeeding practices were educational status, monogamy matrimonial status, visiting health facility, having wives with good perception about their husbands’ involvement in breastfeeding practices and having media information source at home. Further longitudinal studies need to be undertaken to establish casual relationship between estimates.

An increasing number of children and youth are also affected by them. According to the forecasts of the “Institute of Mother and Child”, over the next decade each year the number of overweight children will increase by 400 thousand, including approximately 80 thousand obese children. Overweight and obesity are particularly dangerous for children at preschool and school age as it increases the risk of numerous diseases as well as physical and emotional problems. Objective: The objective of this article is to present implementation of health policy programs concerning prevention and treatment of overweight and obesity among children and youth between 2009-2015 by local government units. Methods: The study was conducted based on desk research. Databases of the Ministry of Health prepared by each voivodeship containing information about implemented health policy programs with regards to overweight and obesity among children and youth were used. Results: Between 2009-2015, local government units at all levels implemented 215 health policy programs concerning overweight and obesity among children and youth. Most programs were implemented by municipalities and counties. The costs incurred by counties and voivodeships were significantly higher than costs incurred by municipalities. Most programs were implemented in the West Pomeranian, Silesian and Masovian Voivodeships. The most common activities included consultations with a dietician, group trainings for children within school classes and various competitions concerning healthy diet and physical activity. The Podlaskie and Świetokrzyskie Voivodeships implemented the smallest number of programs. Conclusion: Programs implemented by local government units were poorly adjusted to the actual health needs of children and youth in terms of prevention and treatment of overweight and obesity. Local government units indicated insufficient engagement in prevention and treatment of overweight and obesity among children and youth. Programs implemented by local government units is have not any casual relationship on obesity prevalence. An insufficient number of program participants were observed. It demonstrates the need to evaluate the activities aimed at fighting overweight and obesity among children and youth. The number of health policy programs should be increased and the forms of program implementation should be more attractive-this will allow more people to be included in the activities.
