The authors examine an array of Cognitive-Behavioural treatments, including Trauma-Focused Cognitive-Behavioural Therapy (TF-CBT), eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) and Group-Delivered Cognitive-Behavioural Therapies (GD-CBT), and also a number of other approaches. The paper concludes that the strongest evidence supports the use of TF-CBT for a wide range of ages and traumas. EMDR is also well supported. Group CBT therapies also have some support especially in response to community-wide traumatic events. A number of other approaches, including some emerging therapies, are identified as meriting further research, whereas others are seen to have little evidence supporting their effectiveness. It identifies that one common approach, critical incident stress debriefing, has little support and ma...","PeriodicalId":91174,"journal":{"name":"The Irish journal of psychology","volume":"32 1","pages":"25-39"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-10-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/03033910.2011.611612","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"59314847","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It also tested the utility of a ‘boosting exercise’ where participants were asked to renew their implementation intentions at first follow-up. A three-group randomised controlled trial was carried out with three data collection time-points. Ninety-three male students watched a TSE demonstration video at baseline; Group 1 (n=32) only watched the video. Groups 2 (n=31) and 3 (n=30) also formed implementation intentions. Group 3 carried out the ‘boosting exercise’ by renewing implementation intentions four weeks later. Performance of TSE was measured at the three time-points. The results showed that TSE performance increased from baseline (20.4%) to first follow up (81.8%) and remained high at second follow up. It was concluded that implementation intentions added no benefit over watching a demonstration video alone, sug...","PeriodicalId":91174,"journal":{"name":"The Irish journal of psychology","volume":"32 1","pages":"40-48"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-10-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/03033910.2011.611614","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"59314898","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The rationale behind the scheme is attributable to the notion that children from disadvantaged backgrounds generally attend secondary school as opposed to grammar school as a result of their 11-plus examination results. The Department of Education reported that throughout Northern Ireland, 11.5% of secondary school pupils’ progress to higher education compared to 74.4% of grammar school pupils. An integral element of the Step-Up programme is its aim to increase levels of self-esteem and self-efficacy in participants in order to facilitate learning, as these have been shown to be positively correlated with academic achievement. A longitudinal study was conducted employing the use of mixed analysis of covariance to examine the changes in these variables in Step-Up pupils compared to non-Step-Up ...","PeriodicalId":91174,"journal":{"name":"The Irish journal of psychology","volume":"31 1","pages":"1-10"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/03033910.2010.10446318","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"59315013","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Fourteen interviews took place, seven with parents whose children were attending a school which provided Early Intensive Behavioural Intervention (EIBI) and seven with parents whose children were receiving typical statutory education provision in a special class for children with autism attached to a mainstream school. In line with current Department of Education and Science guidelines, this class adopted an eclectic mix of approaches. Thematic analysis of responses from a 30-item interview generated six themes: availability of resources; assessment; communication; staff training and qualification; inclusion and mainstreaming; and parent experiences and roles. Responses pointed to a disparity in parental experiences regarding the provision of educational services between the ABA and non-ABA school with parents reporting greater overall satisfaction with the ABA school.","PeriodicalId":91174,"journal":{"name":"The Irish journal of psychology","volume":"31 1","pages":"111-124"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/03033910.2010.10446329","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"59314752","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The data demonstrated that conventional Christian belief and unconventional paranormal belief occupy different locations in relation to Eysenck’s dimensional model of personality. While conventional Christian belief is associated with lower psychoticism scores and higher lie scale scores (greater social conformity), unconventional paranormal belief is associated with higher psychoticism scores and lower lie scale scores (lower social conformity) among pupils attending Catholic and Protestant schools. These findings support the conclusions from studies among young people in England and Wales that unconventional paranormal belief may be serving a different psychological function in comparison to conventional Christi...","PeriodicalId":91174,"journal":{"name":"The Irish journal of psychology","volume":"31 1","pages":"87-94"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/03033910.2010.10446327","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"59314653","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Study 1 (N =61) showed that both conflict protagonists unanimously viewed “Northern Ireland” as the most inclusive superordinate category relative to other viable categories. Employing a longitudinal design, Study 2 (N = 67/43) examined the stability of the intergroup identity perceptions that the Northern Irish Protestant and Catholic groups hold in relation to the superordinate category “Northern Ireland”. Moreover, Study 2 also provided evidence that the Protestant group engages in ingroup projection (i.e. perceiving a large overlap between their ingroup identity category and the superordinate category). Study 3 (N = 307) successfully replicated previous research revealing that, while the Catholic group’s willingness to forgive the outgroup benefits from identifying with the superordinate category, the Protestants’...","PeriodicalId":91174,"journal":{"name":"The Irish journal of psychology","volume":"31 1","pages":"151-170"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/03033910.2010.10446332","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"59314785","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The purpose of this paper is twofold: Firstly, we wanted to establish a set of attributes that Americans relate to the Irish, and secondly, we wanted to explore how the Irish stereotype impacts judgments about those of Irish descent. In Studies 1a and 1b we empirically examined attributes most commonly associated with the Irish. These studies indicate that the “alcohol consumer” attribute is a strong component of the Irish stereotype. In Study 2 we provided further evidence for this stereotype attribute by manipulating availability of cognitive resources. In Study 3 we empirically demonstrated how this stereotype attribute can put people of Irish descent at a relative disadvantage.","PeriodicalId":91174,"journal":{"name":"The Irish journal of psychology","volume":"31 1","pages":"43-52"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/03033910.2010.10446321","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"59314567","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Additionally, there has been a departure from the use of single-item measures of prayer frequency. One such departure has been the development of the Measure of Prayer Type (Richards, 1991), which uses 19 items to measure types of prayer. The present study investigated if an Irish sample engaged in a similar diversity of prayer types as Richards’s American sample. The measure was administered among a sample of Irish respondents (N =518). “Guidance for self” was the prayer type most frequently engaged in while “attunement” was the prayer type least frequently engaged in.","PeriodicalId":91174,"journal":{"name":"The Irish journal of psychology","volume":"31 1","pages":"63-67"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/03033910.2010.10446323","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"59314594","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Often, QoL is assessed in a context where health or well-being are compromised. This study sought to explore individually defined QoL among older people living in the community in Ireland and to examine its determinants, including health and psychological well-being, and perceptions of ageing. A national randomly selected sample of community-dwelling older people (aged 65+) in the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland (N = 1,815) were interviewed in their homes. QoL, health and social status, and perceptions of ageing were assessed. The mean QoL score was high (78.5, SD = 18.1). Higher QoL was associated with higher social class, better self-assessed health, fewer functional impairments and lower levels of depression and loneliness (allp < .001). Higher QoL was also associated with more positive perceptions of ageing.
