The role of leptin to suppress the thyroid and reproductive axes during a prolonged fast has been well defined; however, the impact of leptin on metabolic regulation has been incompletely understood. However emerging evidence suggests that, in starvation, hypoleptinemia increases activity of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis, promoting WAT lipolysis, increasing hepatic acetyl-CoA concentrations, and maintaining euglycemia. In addition, leptin may be largely responsible for mediating a shift from a reliance upon glucose metabolism (absorption and glycogenolysis) to fat metabolism (lipolysis increasing gluconeogenesis) which preserves substrates for the brain, heart, and other critical organs. In this way a leptin-mediated glucose-fatty acid cycle appears to maintain glycemia and permit survival in starvation.</p>","PeriodicalId":90946,"journal":{"name":"Postdoc journal : a journal of postdoctoral research and postdoctoral affairs","volume":"6 3","pages":"3-19"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5909716/pdf/nihms959176.pdf","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"36032174","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In eukaryotes, cohesin is essential for accurate segregation of the sister chromatids during mitosis and meiosis. Majority of cohesin complexes are removed from chromosomes during prophase in higher eukaryotes. WAPL mediated opening of the cohesin ring at the junction between the SMC3 ATPase domain and the N-terminal domain of cohesin's α-kleisin subunit has been shown in flies and human. Cohesin complex also plays a role in DNA damage repair, regulation of gene expression and chromosome condensation. In this commentary, recent discoveries of the mode of mechanism of cohesin establishment and maintenance in higher eukaryotes has been highlighted.","PeriodicalId":90946,"journal":{"name":"Postdoc journal : a journal of postdoctoral research and postdoctoral affairs","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-01-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"46033625","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Biominerals are often loosely associated with the organic substrate on which they form making it difficult to determine the origin of minerals as biogenic or abiotic oxidation products. There are a variety of techniques that can be used for preservation of specimens ensuring that observation of desired relationships can be preserved. Here we examine various fixation, dehydration, and staining techniques using a suite of specimens in an effort to determine which technique works best with a particular type of biofilm. Types of biofilms used for this study included, biofilms attached to glass slides, flocculent non-cohesive biofilms, and cohesive highly mineralized biofilms. Microscopy was done to characterize the integrity of microorganisms, biominerals, microbemineral assemblages, alteration of specimens, and artifacts introduced during fixation and dehydration. Results indicate that vapor fixation of biofilms is the ideal methods of preservation for enumeration and characterization of biofilm architecture. Microbe-mineral assemblages remained intact when collected and immediately preserved in soft agar containing 2% glutaraldehyde.","PeriodicalId":90946,"journal":{"name":"Postdoc journal : a journal of postdoctoral research and postdoctoral affairs","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-11-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"49588757","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

NcRNAs belong to a family of regulatory transcripts that affect every stage of gene expression, from transcription and mRNA stability to mRNA translation. Recent evidence has uncovered critical roles for noncoding RNAs in cancer pathogenesis. For example, variation of specific microRNAs has shown to drive tumorigenesis in human cancer cells and mouse models. Long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) have also been related to diverse cancer phenotypes and neurological disorders. NcRNAs are deeply involved in the regulation of key genes that are associated with cancer, representing a promising area for new therapies. This review focuses on ncRNAs, their role in cancer, and the translational implications of noncoding RNA research that may contribute to the development of innovative therapeutic solutions to treat cancer, and improve patients’ quality of life and survival.","PeriodicalId":90946,"journal":{"name":"Postdoc journal : a journal of postdoctoral research and postdoctoral affairs","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-11-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"46960824","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

For these varied roles, Rot1p adopts an unusual topology whereby the Nterminus, which gets glycosylated, faces the ER lumen and its single hydrophobic Cterminus with its essential serine-250 residue enables cell survivability [5, 6]. In addition, a comprehensive geneticinteraction analysis suggested its interaction with the proteasomal system. Whilst its diverse functions have been extensively studied; the dynamics of Rot1 protein stability in yeast cells is unknown. In this issue, Juanes et.al., [doi.org/cg8p] showed that the Rot1 protein stability is mediated by the ubiquitin proteasome system (UPS), which is dependent on the main degradation pathway located at the ER, the ER-associated degradation system (ERAD). Here the authors employed the GAL4 shut-off assay to ascertain the role of the ERAD system, Ubc6, Ubc7 and Hrd1, along with Pre1 and Pre2 of the UPS on Rot1 protein stability.","PeriodicalId":90946,"journal":{"name":"Postdoc journal : a journal of postdoctoral research and postdoctoral affairs","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-11-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"47794828","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These declining enrollments were precipitated by changing demographics that resulted in a decline in the number of high school graduates. In recent years, South Korea has begun a similar decline, even though it is already a significant source of ISs migrating to other countries. The Korean government has sought various ways to increase the number of inbound ISs, but these efforts have been hampered by a number of issues, many of them rooted in cultural and institutional elements. This paper reviews the contemporary literature on these issues and attempt to combine the results into policy recommendations that may allow for the implementation of more sustainable IS programs. These issues and policy recommendations likely apply to the educational contexts of other countries, especially those with similar prospects for demographic change.","PeriodicalId":90946,"journal":{"name":"Postdoc journal : a journal of postdoctoral research and postdoctoral affairs","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-11-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"67014775","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
